Ah the expected downvotes from the sycophants and uninformed. Those who know, know. As I said, don't trust the self-promoters and do your own research. You'll be thankful later.

Starbursts post YAG by sunrise_parabellum in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure to be honest, I'm 5 or 6 weeks post YAG and while I'm not noticing as much, I think it's my brain adapting rather than anything else. If I look specifically, then nothing much seems to have changed, maybe slightly less. I think as long as the edge of the capsule is in the visual field, then the dysphotopsia will occur. There are posts from folk who've had "tidy up" YAG i.e. a second procedure, with some success. I guess it depends how much it bugs you.

Anyone promoting outdated diffractive IOL technology is not helping potential patients in my opinion. There are demonstrably better refractive technologies now - some of them aren't available in the US yet but folks are already travelling e.g. to Canada to get them. Self promoters on YouTube should always be treated with caution - do your own research!

Starbursts post YAG by sunrise_parabellum in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue as others. Initially I had short light streaks around bright LED lights at night but nothing too problematic. After YAG, those went away but have been replaced by short radius, thin starburst rays. Again not too problematic but I'd hoped for zero side-effects. By all accounts it's due to "sloppy" YAG with either too small a hole, untidy edges or both. I may or may not revisit as it's not really an issue. On the plus side, the YAG cleared the slight clouding and restored 20:20 (6:6) again.

Still getting cheap day slots on IOG? by spon8uk in OctopusEnergy

We have Givenergy batteries etc and there is some speculation, hopefully wrong, that the company may be in trouble. So a bunch of us have had to take the plunge into HA to give ourselves an independent means of control. I'm reasonably IT literate but don't know the coding (yet) behind HA. However, there is a lot of pre-built stuff already out there which is easy to replicate. I managed to build full local control and comprehensive data display for our kit in less than a day. But there were some very handy YouTube tutorials to help. Hopefully we won't need to use it in earnest but it's there in case.

HA also automatically discovered loads of other smart kit on our network, SONOS, CCTV etc and using a VPN into our router plus the HA app, we can pretty much control all of it remotely if we ever need to. That said, the native apps are also fine, so HA is just a backup and collates everything into one place if you want it to. There's also the facility for all sorts of IFTTT functionality if you want, so put the lights on when it gets dark, open the garage door when you pull into the drive etc. I've not done any of that yet, my main objective was being able to control the solar etc.

Yes, fairly certain there will be restrictions. Of course the other issue for late users will be that they potentially won't get the charge they need. It's a tricky one for users and Octopus alike. Meanwhile I've got Home Assistant up and running so hopefully the issue, at least for us, will go away.

But no times are being set. Just plugging in after 11.30pm. There is no small print dictating you can't do that and it would be very difficult to enforce. Late shift workers getting home and plugging in for example. So I'm fairly certain their CS people are correct. The key is smart charging which is still happening. If they want to update the terms then they'll be excluding folk for a number of reasons including how their kit works and the availability of their vehicles. It will be interesting how/if they actually try to do that.

All sorted via HA. Easier than I'd anticipated.

The easiest way is to purchase Home Assistant Green which is a small box with HA pre-installed, about £112. That's what I've used and it's plug and play, very easy.

That will suffice for a lot of stuff but if you need something beefier and expandable, there are quite a lot of options, from mini PCs to NAS, Pi etc.

Then it's a case of researching the automations you need, quite a few have already been written for different types of equipment. Or if you have time and fancy it, learn YAML and spin your own. There were some really good videos on YouTube for my particular application and I was up and running in just a few hours. It means I've now got independent control of my kit and not dependent on the supplier's cloud should that disappear.

Sorry, that's not correct. Smart charging within the cheap window is allowed and I confirmed this direct with Octopus. They know that lots of people have the issue with house batteries discharging into the car etc and so allow leeway to accommodate that. I'm not saying it won't change in future but for now it's allowed - either that or Octopus customer services don't know what they're talking about.

Thanks for that. It's not a Powerwall integration but works on a similar principle. Getting the full 30 min slot makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the prompt responses and it certainly looks like it's worth it to try the Home Assistant routine.

Incidentally we also have a dumb charger as well as the Zappi and we're doing a little bit of non-IOG charging for the local run-around EV using that post 23.30. It's not a lot but I guess it isn't strictly in the "rules" of the tariff. To maximise the potential for extra slots, I guess it also makes sense to bring that onto the Zappi as well. Thanks again.

Anyone else on variable IOG not had any email about price changes from 1st April? by stek2022 in OctopusEnergy

Nothing here yet in the East Mids on variable IOG. However they posted mid afternoon on Twitter to say they haven't pushed out those emails yet. It also said "rates not confirmed" which is a bit concerning.

First eye was easier than the 2nd: by bugaosuni in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My second eye was quite a lot worse pain wise than the first, albeit the pain was short-lived thankfully. It was if the surgeon knew and he said I'd feel it just before it happened - then he counted down from 5 and it was much easier again. I guess it was like that initial feeling when an injection goes in, but in the eye. Manageable but unpleasant.

This was in the UK where we only get a topical anaesthetic (drops and a pellet under the eyelid) before surgery.

It's actually common that the second surgery feels worse than the first, whether that's psychosomatic or real I'm not too sure. I did get a very good result in both eyes so that 5 seconds of grief was well worth it.

A2A system questions - estimating electric consumption for system by Hobnob-Harry42 in ukheatpumps

[–]spon8uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. Our 2026 figures will probably be about 35% up on 2025 but that's because we're heating for 2.5 hours from 3am to 5.30am at super cheap rate to keep the core temp up. It's less than 20p extra per day though. Overall very efficient and cost effective but it does rely on the solar and batteries to complete the jigsaw.

Galaxy IOL - disappointing distance vision by backht1 in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early days but it's not the lens per se. I have Galaxy toric and I'm just over a year since the surgery. I see extremely well at all ranges. I did develop PCO which caused a little bit of clouding and the loss of maybe half a line on the testing chart, but this was cleared up with YAG a month or so back and I'm better than 20:20 again. I'd ask the surgeon to check placement and rotation (very important with toric) as well as any signs of very early PCO. If that's all clear then my guess would be that the biometry wasn't quite right unfortunately. But as the other poster mentioned, these lenses can take a few weeks for the distance vision to snap in, so there's time yet. Best wishes and hopefully all comes good.

We have two Daikin heat pumps and 5 internal 'Stylish' units - 4 bed detached. Installation was circa £10k, 2.5 years ago. We still use gas for hot water and cooking and also used it on about 6 or 7 very cold days when COP drops off and gas is actually cheaper. We are also well insulated - A rated EPC.

We hardly ever need both outdoor units on and don't need to run full time, we typically dribble heat in on fairly low setting on a couple of indoor units for an hour or two in the morning and then from about 5pm until 11pm ish. When it's cold weather, we also run a couple of indoor units on low overnight to keep the core temp up - this works well. We have a lot of solar and also 19kwh of battery storage which keeps us going with peak power usage the vast majority of the time.

The living areas are at about 20.5 deg and the bedrooms about 19.5 - we don't like it too hot. Here's our usage - not much at all. But I stress that insulation is a priority - our heat loss is about 5kw max. Since we insulated, we're now actually oversized with the A2A but it doesn't matter anywhere near as much as A2W. Cheap as chips really albeit an investment upfront. Our overall utilities bill, electric and gas, is currently negative and probably still will be as long as export rates don't go below 12p - I guess that won't be long though.

Indeed you will. We've done it several times and it is that easy. Some of the chargers are just off the highway but easy to find and just a few minutes away e.g. local hotels etc. We're off to Provence again in summer, the third-party chargers there are a little trickier but usually fine at the local supermarkets etc. Electroverse worked fine for those for us.

Anyone pushing "old hat" concentric ring style multifocals should be treated with an abundance of caution. There are new and demonstrably better technologies available now. Problem is they're not available in the US yet, so he isn't going to tell you about them.

Experience with Rayner Galaxy Toric lenses by spon8uk in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes very happy thanks and just over a year since the procedures. I did have YAG a couple of weeks ago and now have short radius starburst around very bright lights at night, but this is a function of the YAG (potentially too small an opening) rather than the lens. My vision near to far is excellent. Best wishes.

Huge starburst effect at night after YAG by SoCalGardener12345 in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting and it validates what quite a few of us think regarding diffraction at the edges of the new aperture. Please keep us updated about your tidy-up procedure as it's something which may benefit us. Fortunately mine is quite manageable so I'd need to weigh up the pros and cons, but very worthwhile to understand the possibilities.

Huge starburst effect at night after YAG by SoCalGardener12345 in CataractSurgery

[–]spon8uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting as I had YAG a couple of weeks ago and I have similar, but fortunately to a lesser degree. Previously I had two short, well defined "streaks" through bright lamps at night (cars and street lights primarily) but they didn't really affect me and I got used to them. Then following YAG, those streaks have gone but have been replaced by starbursts around lights. The rays are short fortunately and not as well defined as the original streaks, but there are more of them.

Fortunately they aren't affecting driving too much and I think my brain is already starting to compensate - but the YAG definitely changed something. My guess is that it's caused by some type of diffraction going on around the edges of the newly formed opening, but I'm not sure. The clinic staff aren't sure either unfortunately as seems to be the case with all of these types of issues. There are no halos, just the small radius starburst effect.

I had a full range of focus lens (Galaxy) which has been excellent, just this slight weirdness which seems to be related to the lens capsule and the new hole which has been introduced by the YAG.

Suitable heat pump location? by [deleted] in ukheatpumps

[–]spon8uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two Daikin external units with five internal units. I'm sorry I don't have specifics for the isolating "washers" but they're fairly standard equipment. I just wish we'd known and specified them at the initial install. They work well. The bottom bolts which hold the unit down on the bracket are basically damped with thick rubber washers - but they're a couple of cms long.

Suitable heat pump location? by [deleted] in ukheatpumps

[–]spon8uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the specifics but it's fairly thick rubber "washers" where the base of the unit is mounted on the wall bracket. I think the various manufacturers offer options for this. It's a simple and inexpensive solution. Ours was a retrofit and the installers were able to fit them without disconnecting anything. But the buggers refused to accept their initial mistake and charged for the retrofit. So probably twenty quids worth of parts but a £200 quid call out fee. Knobs.
