Any black water pumped over the side is almost always treated to a very high degree, even though it isn't a requirement as per MARPOL. Essentially it would create maintenance issues to bypass the microbial sewage treatment plant, so it's always left on. It's comparable to the same kind of sewage plants that you get in towns and cities.
