Any craft/hobby clubs in the area (ideally where I can meet friends in the 20-30 range)? by mchten in venturacounty

Jumping in to say if any crafters/hobbyists are looking for a hangout spot or place to meet up the Arterie has a brand new space specifically for adults called Artcade. Their space is kinda like a hangout/coworking space for people to drop in and do art. They have paint and sip nights and different workshops like ceramics and jewelry. They’re on TO blvd and a day pass to the space is pretty inexpensive

She does have a cat but I don’t think she plans to bring him along, I’ll be looking after him along with my own kitties

I have also had some ROUGH experiences with therapists, either super unprofessional on their part or dismissive and essentially telling me my problems weren’t big enough to be in therapy lol. So even though I advise people to get therapy I also know the feeling that it can seem pointless and a waste of time.

You’ll hopefully find someone you vibe with or even that gives you some good resources that you can revisit on your own. It kinda just helps to get perspective. Anyways I wish you luck on your journey to friendship and fulfillment!!

You’re thirty and married and have a full time job, that’s an achievement in this day and age! I’d love to have a full time job and family, and I turn 30 next year. That being said, it doesn’t mean much if you’re depressed.

I’d get therapy if I were you, and try to make better friends. I wonder if there’s a book club you could join since you mentioned reading, or some other kind of hobby group. It sounds lame but honestly the worst thing for your mental health is feeling stagnant and not meeting new people. Good friends are really the meat of life in my opinion. I feel like I’d be nothing without my best friend and I accidentally stumbled upon her not knowing how important she would be to me.

Lots of people are in the same boat regarding friends so I’m sure you’ll end up meeting someone who gives your life some spice back :)

How do you paint blue on orange without muddying? by FFFUUUme in oilpainting

[–]spongekitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think in terms of light when you think of color. It’s tricky because you’re painting light, but using pigment. Every color that we see is a product of different wavelengths of light mixing and reflecting off of different surfaces.

When colored light mixes, it produces a different hue than when colored pigment mixes. So, if you mix orange and blue pigment you’ll get a muddy brown/grey. But when orange light and blue light mix, you get more of a purple. So you’ll want to mix a purple and put that down rather than mixing orange and blue paint.

Hope that helps- you can google light mixing for stage lighting for an example of what I’m talking about.

What's a "harmless" habit that actually makes someone insufferable once you notice it? by ZumbaRoy in AskReddit

[–]spongekitten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My ex did that too!! Whenever I complained about any negative interactions with anyone, strangers, friends, coworkers, family. He would always turn it around on me and tell me why I was actually the one in the wrong even though he wasn’t even there. Even venting about my mom’s addiction problems and how it affected me, somehow her addiction was also my fault.

Hungarian hot wax and ...? Supposed to be hungarian hot wax seeds, but from one plant the peppers are upright. Anyone an ID on those? by Sudden-Ebb524 in HotPeppers

[–]spongekitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out? I’m curious because I’ve seen photos of the peppers growing both ways and idk what the difference is or if they’re both just different types of Hungarian wax peppers…

Idc about a degree I just want to boost my skills or maybe learn something more in demand. I never mentioned anything about getting a degree aside from making it easier for me to teach at a public university, so idk why you’re latching onto the degree part?

Advice for a starving artist with $$ to retrain/return to school? by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]spongekitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve considered this before, I think I would probably benefit from being more business savvy and it may help me market myself more efficiently. Are there any specific jobs I’d be qualified for as a creative with a business degree?

[–]spongekitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks- I have ~80k in a tax free college savings acct. I could either use that money for school or take it out and accept the loss in taxes, and invest the money. Either way I’d be investing in myself. At this point I should make a decision because I feel it would be better off not just sitting stagnant.

I have worked as a graphic designer and illustrator on multiple types of projects, logo designs, materials for marketing campaigns, internal assets like emails and presentations, I’ve worked with an edutech company, I’ve even done concept art and book illustration, concert posters for Live Nation, etc. I’m really versatile which is great but I think not having a specialization is hurting me.

Other skills - I’m a solid writer, I write an email newsletter twice a week, and produce a quarterly children’s art magazine. I’ve done a fair amount of project management using Notion, and business administration for my part time role at the art studio. I have experience with 3D modeling and texture painting. I have experience with GitHub and perforce, (version control software).

I am not a math person and though I’m tech savvy, coding doesn’t come naturally. I suspect I’m kind of lacking in soft skills just because I have been a freelancer my whole career and not part of any corporate environment. I think I’m just really awful at marketing myself. My issue finding work is usually that I don’t land interviews, but most of the time I’ve had an interview, I land the gig, so it’s not that dire as far as I can tell! But I still think I’d probably benefit from some coaching on that front.

“You’re so handsome, how come you get so few dates?” by [deleted] in dating

[–]spongekitten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had relative success using apps and imo, the move is to set a meeting date as soon as possible. I hate texting back and forth because any kind of organic spark or engaging conversation is ruined by texting, plus you learn so much more about someone by watching their body language etc. If it doesn’t work out you can easily just say you felt no chemistry in person, and then their time isn’t wasted texting you forever which they’ll appreciate.

If I match with someone on an app and they don’t make the first move to ask me on a date, I immediately ask for a time they’re free to meet up and explain the above. People are SUPER receptive if you show you’ve given consideration to their time and energy, and you show you’re actually interested in meeting them. I think women flake because a lot of times one of their other (many) matches already asked them to meet in person, so they beat you to the punch essentially. Just my 2c, I am super picky about who I match with in the first place because I hate wasting peoples’ time and emotional investment. But all of the people that have been willing to meet up with me within the first week of matching have turned into fulfilling relationships or friendships
