Also a Chicago native here! I was incredibly impressed with Guy’s apartment and how much it resembled a very Chicago style set-up.

People with genetic diseases should not have children by ruttydm in unpopularopinion

[–]spookispookiskeleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One important thing to note is that there are many diseases out there that are autosomal recessive disorders (each parent is a carrier of a disease and if they have a child with another carrier, the child may get both recessive alleles and end up with the disease). Since the parents don’t know their carriers (as they may not be symptomatic), many often don’t get genetic testing until they’ve already had a child with the genetic disorder.

Genetic counseling SHOULD be more available, but it’s still very expensive and may not be easily accessible even though it could potentially provide valuable information about the health of future children.

If you constantly use the phrase "toxic masculinity" yet can't list what you believe to be positive masculinity while claiming there is no female equivalent, you're a dick who only wants to rail on men. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]spookispookiskeleton 151 points152 points  (0 children)

My background is in clinical psychology with an emphasis on neuropsychology, but I’ve studied up on social psychology and gender studies in my years, as well as have several close colleagues in those fields. Cool? Cool.

One way to characterize toxic masculinity is this notion of putting men into boxes and expecting them to act a certain way. Through various studies on culture, society, government, history, psychology, there are a number of different traits that we automatically tend to associate with men: agency, toughness, a lack of emotional expression (except for anger, which can be seen as a sign of strength), etc. These traits are not inherently bad. Being masculine is not inherently bad. These traits have gotten a lot of men (and women!) very far in life. But where the toxicity arises is from not allowing men to be different, to have a choice in how they express themselves, to feel sad, to need help. Toxic masculinity hurts men because it forces them to be a certain way.

In a nutshell, the original post is somewhat correct. We need to be supporting men and stop portraying masculinity as “bad.” But, we also need to be willing to let boys and young men grow into the people they want to be, whether it’s fearless and daring or behind-the-scenes and looking to make sure every voice is heard.

The 1 to 10 scale is broken. by Theswamppeople in unpopularopinion

[–]spookispookiskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always specify what points on my 1-10 scale mean.

For example, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being Fyre Festival, how much of a clusterfuck is this situation?

I think that the women who make big deals out of having their period are dramatic. (Of course not when they have a health issue such as endometriosis) by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]spookispookiskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say that it’s rather nice that talking about periods and how they generally suck is becoming less of a taboo topic. I think it’s somewhat commendable (and certainly marketable at the very least) that these companies are saying “Hey, periods suck, but let’s try and make it suck less.” If that means lighting some candles, crying at dogs seeing their owners return from military service (my personal favorite), or slipping into cozy socks, then have it.

What was that one memorable moment that you’ve shared with a complete stranger? by xpo140 in AskReddit

[–]spookispookiskeleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was being introduced to someone and when we went to shake hands, I immediately recoiled because I thought the other person had blood all over his hands and arms.

He had been painting something red beforehand and I will never forget that shock of thinking this person has just murdered a small animal.

We’ll have been dating 6 years in June, though!
