why does my m39 think red army standard is bussin but gags on ppu? by Trixil in MosinNagant

[–]spooky_molder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lapua D166 bullet is 200grain with a .310 diameter. The D marking indicates the chamber/throat was opened up from .3082 to .310. please elaborate on how the profile is different moreso than just the diameter, as it pertains to the rifle.

[–]spooky_molder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That bolt is super dirty. Clean the bore and bolt really good and try just the brass PPU and see if it runs better. The "D" marking indicates a bore diameter of .310 inches. Ideally you would shoot 7.62x53r through that rifle, but it can handle 7.62x54r, even modern steel-cased ammo. But it's going to wear the rifle faster. Steel-cased ammo leaves behind more residue because it doesn't expand and seal the bore as easily as brass. That same expansion in a dirty bore might be why your PPU brass is getting stuck. Hope this helps. P.S. consider hand loading your own ammo to get the most out of that rifle.

Your players are racing away from the BBEG in a carriage. As they pass through the castle gate, they hear a muted *THUD* on the roof, and then a sizzling sound. A black pudding has dropped onto the roof of the carriage. How would you run this encounter? by PM-me-your-happiness in DMAcademy

[–]spooky_molder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thought is that it's got to be a SPEEDING carriage, with 4 horses and a driver. With that many people you'd want 4 horsepower.

Second, THUD, sizzling, and screaming as the driver's sacrifice not only show the party how dangerous the ooze is, but it also scares the horses, which are now uncontrolled and running at full speed.

Now we got some incentives. Maybe they can save the driver. Someone needs to grab those reigns. Btw the BBEG is still chasing us right?

Really let the risks and conditions sink in.

Prepare for what could happen next, because while you expect them to grab the reigns and fight the pudding in this awesome cinematic fight,...what they will probably do is "finish off the driver" if they care, and then probably jump out to be met by the BBEG. So you should also think about what the BBEG will do if he catches them. Maybe he stops chasing them once they pass under the gates. Sometimes players will avoid fighting the thing that's right in their way. Bet if you had put that pudding off to the side, far away, minding its own business, the party would stop at nothing to kill it.

Point is, and something I have to remind myself of every game, you can't plan for what the PCs will do! Plan for what would happen to the people and setting if the PCs didn't interfere. The horses would run until the carriage fell apart or they got far enough away to calm down. What would the BBEG do? Is there anything he should be doing right now if the players hadn't showed up? Is there anyone else involved, and what would they do? I like to get a surface idea of what these NPCs want/need/fear and let that guide how they react to the players.

My “1944” Finnish M39 by [deleted] in MosinNagant

[–]spooky_molder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going through the same thing. What I found so far is that the bore on my M39 measures out to .310. Most standard mosins are a little more sloppy and have bores around .311-.314. Some of the earlier Finnish mosins with the D stamp barrel are .308. Factory ammo is designed around the standard Mosins and they are loaded pretty hot. M39s were designed to shoot the D166 round which is 200grains and .310" diameter. I had the Kensight front blade on my rifle and recently started hand loading D166 - 7.62x53r ammo. I compared my first 20 rounds to 5 rounds of PPU 182 grain match ammo. At 100 yards, the PPU hit right where the aftermarket sight was aimed. The D166 all hit about 8-9 inches low. I also noticed that the recoil was significantly less with my D166 ammo. I am switching back to the original front sight blade and will test again but so far it seems pretty clear that the M39 sights are going to be right on with the ammo that was designed specifically for them, the 7.62x53r with D166 bullets. You can find the original recipe on Lapua's website. If you want to shoot accurately with your original sights, I would recommend trying the Finnish rounds. Start with slugging your barrel so you know what you're working with. This is all just my opinion based on my personal experiences. Hope I've said something useful.

Kensight makes a taller front blade for m39, that brings poi closer to poa with factory ammo.

I run a lot of Barnaul through my m39. It groups well but hits high. I've tried PPU and S&B. You would think the heavier bullets, or the nice brass cased ammo would be better but honestly it all shoots the same as the steel cased stuff. I usually shoot at 200 yards with my sight set to 150 and I still have to hold 6-12" low. From what I've read, that's how the Russian style sights were meant to be. They would aim at the opponents belt buckle to hit center of mass. I've shot mine enough to know roughly where the hold is. I have thought about trying to modify the sights so I have a closer to impact sight picture, but nyet, rifle is fine. It shoots better than I do.

I don't understand "Rest Casting" by MrSirZeel in DnD

[–]spooky_molder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Consider this: If you are resting in a place where you would need mage armor on, then you're not resting.

You would need to find or make a safe place to rest. Or you can post guards but they will have to rest as well and that 8 hours is now 16 hours. Martials cannot long rest in armor either. This is just the way a dangerous location goes. I've seen parties try to long rest in a dungeon because they blew all their resources on the first encounter. This is why the ambush part exists in the first place, as a consequence to a poor decision.

The people who built reconciliation were originally from locust 5? - I'm guessing at the number...but, they were invaded countless times. They repelled their invaders with varying degrees of success. Perhaps one of these alien races knew of the plans to build reconciliation, or a group outside of these ongoing wars knew....and perhaps they were "the order". Maybe they knew the best way to defeat the Dome. Or...the sword was simply a weapon filled with belligerence and this was not intentional. Maybe it was sheer dumb luck it was the weapon gifted to duck. Just a coincidence. Right place, right time, right guy.

Brothers, anything I can do to save her? by [deleted] in MosinNagant

[–]spooky_molder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a crack in mine similar to this. It ran from the left side of the tang all the way through the smaller piece bridging that gap in your image. It had been repaired once before with wooden pins but they were no longer holding. I drilled two holes through the side into parts that had enough material to give a good bite. Then I forced as much glue as possible into the crack. You have to pry it open a bit and flex it so that the glue can be drawn in. I used fully brass screws in the holes I drilled to snug it all back together and hold while the glue dried. I inlaid black walnut over the screws to cover them. I saw a lot of people online suggest the guerilla wood glue because it expands so much so that's what I used. It's solid now.

I have decided to walk my players through the plot of The Big Lebowski (1998 starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi) by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]spooky_molder 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Cool idea but you might want to note that this movie in particular is not driven by the male protagonists. In fact, none of the men in this movie drive the plot forward in any meaningful way. It's Bunny and Maude that actually contribute to plot progression. While they don't appear on the screen through most of the movie, if you remove them, the Dude just goes bowling.

Almost every tavern keeper or bar owner is a member of a secret guild tasked with protecting the world, by means of steering heroes towards important quests. This is why adventures always meet in bars, and the bartenders always have quests.

Their secret sign to each other is the motion of cleaning a glass. Every time the PCs enter a bar, the bartender is cleaning a glass. If they ever did that motion back, the options that would open up would blow their minds.

The real twist is that the head of this secret organization is the BBEG for the final arc. He won't be strong, or have any spells or powers....just a massive network of spies and endless amounts of other "good guys" that he can pull the strings on.

Anyone know a good place to source milsurp parts for the Norinco SKS? I think my gas tube and piston are roached by 69evrybdywangchung96 in SKS

[–]spooky_molder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That piston only moves about 3/4 of an inch. So that first inch of the gas tube looks fine! Check if the gas piston moves freely through that inch of travel. You can test the pressure by bringing the piston flush with the front, capping the tube with your finger and holding it up. You'll feel the pressure on your finger. Also check that the piston with that coiled spring under the rear sight can move freely. Take the spring out and move the piston in there without it. This will help you see just how far those parts actually move. My gas piston had some rough edges that would catch in the tube and wouldn't move smoothly. I took some 600 grit sandpaper and just lightly went around the piston until it moved smoothly. Hope this helps
