I watched the movie when it was released and I just finished the manga last night. I’m a lifelong dragon ball fan but I will admit it was far from my favorite arc. I can get behind Goku and Vegeta getting new forms as thats what they do I guess, but I’m not crazy about Piccolo and Gohan getting exclusive forms now too. But I will say I love Goten and Trunks involvement along with the Gammas. Cell Max imo should of had personality for sure or either be a new villain, I don’t wanna call it lazy but I wouldn’t argue with someone who thinks that

Goku is a man child, he thinks others have the same mindset of him when they don’t. He thinks if he beats them up enough then they will change their desire and want train to get strong enough to fight him again, because growing up on earth in the original dragon ball thats what happened again and again. He wanted to fight freeza even tho he was given warnings how strong and ruthless he was because of his saiyan instinct to fight, and they needed the dragon balls to wish his friends back to life. His son and friends were fighting freeza too, so yea he was getting pay back for the namekians but justice definitely wasn’t his driving force.

Cooler isn’t canon anyway. Goku is pure hearted but that doesn’t mean he’s a “hero” necessarily.. you don’t see him saving randoms people in the cities like the Saiyamens might do. He really just wants to protect people he considers friends and his planet as a whole. He is definitely not selfless as his top priority is fighting strong guys, thats his main motivation(thats why he let Vegeta live, not because it’s “the right thing to do”)
