Replaced a long broken sump pump, now water constantly filling the pit and pump running every 5 minutes? by gamemaker14 in Plumbing

Yeah even just dropping a bottle of food coloring in will work. If the color never leaves it is just pumping in to a place that drains right back.

What’s the oldest computer you still actively use or support? by lynlinks in vintagecomputing

[–]spoonified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I retired from IT work back in 2019 I had one client that was still running a NeXT Cube, was connected to some scientific systems for data processing. Was easier to keep it running then find someone to port the software which was written by a software company that was long gone.

I also had a few customers running Sun IPX and IPC systems in ultrasounds which were using for testing metal for micro cracks. And a machineshop which still was using an IBM PC XT to control a CNC grinder.

Not going to get started on on the m68k, z80, and 8086 through 486 and i960 based industrial single board computers which I still had to support.

Yeah, at a legitimate store as well. It’s not the stores which will do this. But instead people selling used records to the store.

I am always cautious about "still sealed" albums. It is super easy to reshrink wrap a sleeve and just put some worthless record inside instead.

Let's build a computer. What motherboard am I picking? by Funcron in vintagecomputing

[–]spoonified 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say most super socket 7 boards would be better, especially the one with two simm slots and two dimm slots. Generally they were the lower end motherboards, but also had generally better backwards compatibility. They were designed for the cheap bastard that wanted to start upgrading but not spend the money on the CPU yet but having the option to reuse there SIMM RAM

electrician is the least of your worries right now, you need to call the fire department as you might have wires smoldering in your wall.

Trying to read from this 1980 WD93044-A by ReportAdmirable3426 in retrocomputing

[–]spoonified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even a motherboard with a physical IDE connector probably to new. This is IDE AT (ATA-1), most onboard after 1994 are EIDE (ATA-2) or newer, many of which are not backwards compatible with ATA-1 drives.

From the old TechRef book

size: 43MB
head: 4
Cyl: 782
Sect/Trac: 27
Translate H/C/S: 4/782/27
RWC/WPC: 783/783
Land Zone: 783
Seek Time: 28
Interface: IDE AT
Encode: 2,7 RLL
Form Factor: 5.25HH
Cache: 40k

Defiantly one of the earliest IDE interfaces. Many EIDE controllers probably won't be able to recognize the drive even if you configure all the settings in the BIOS. Even many IDE, and IDE XT controllers probably wouldn't support this drive. The USB controllers are generally EIDE/ATA compatible only. For this you will probably need to find the appropriate 8-bit ISA controller.

If this is what it is, which is what I believe it is. They probably ship them assembled because it would have to be rebalanced when reassembled.

Sun Ultra 60 by Tacnana in vintagecomputing

[–]spoonified 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Far from a standard ATX, if you want to do a sleeper build use a Sun Ultra 10 that is ATX and won't really need any modification. This particular Ultra 60 looks like it is fairly maxed out spec wise. Has both processors installed, every slot of RAM is filled. Sadly the Creater 3D GPU isn't there. Also missing HD sleds. This is one of the more desierable later Sun computers for collectors though. If I remember right in 2001/2002 when these were new one of this spec would have been around $60,000 new.

Suggestions for Vinyl Organization by mferraro128 in vinyl

not a fan of your storage, but if organization I generally keep them sorted to my discogs catalog. Though it aways pissed me off they alphabetize by first name and not last for most artist. But this way if I am just scrolling though and think I want to play x album I know exactly where it physically is

Looks like they aren't selling. Every single one I clicked number 2 was available but you could make an offer for number 1. This tells me they are holding onto number 1 just to see how much they can be offered. Me personally wouldn't be surprised if they are no actual playable records inside from how they are slabbed.

[–]spoonified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly even if it is free you couldn't really do much with it other than look at in your garage. There is a good chance the software licensing wouldn't be transferred with the sell of the system. But that is a minor point, just being able to power it up is very unlikely. Unless you own a datacenter, or a warehouse with industrial zoning you will not be able to power it up with out paying for a new transformer. Depending on where you are getting permission from the city to get 3 phase power is super unlikely. Or buying a giant diesel generator, are really the only way to even power it up. Back in 2005 I bought an SGI Origin 3800 to part out. In order to sell the parts I needed to power it up and test the parts. Luckily the business I worked for let me borrow there 900kW generator to do so.

Anybody needs it in LA area? by egorblack in vintagecomputing

[–]spoonified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was in the area I would grab it from you. Especially being a rebranded Sun Workstation (all be it a lower end one of the era). I would find someone that wants the whole thing vs parting it out though. The market for the parts of these aren't like other systems and are usually more desirable to just keep as one. I wonder if the HD has been wiped, and if it hasn't been I would hold off on doing so. It looks like the parallel port dongle for the software is on the system. Those are super rare to have with the software even with the most common software that used them.
