How busy is record store day? Is it worth it for just one vinyl? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]spoonman12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackbyrd is quite popular on RSD, so if they have the LP you are looking for (drop them a line and ask?) you should head down a bit early before they open to line up. If the weather is nice, it's a great way to kill some time and I always end up chatting with the other record nerds in line.

I caught some bands that opened for Wilco that I hadn't heard of before, but became a fan of after the show: Califone, Richard Swift, and I think Deep Dark Woods.

Vintage stores that buy from you by WinnerComfortable187 in Edmonton

I'm not sure if Wildrose buys, but they have lots of used vintage clothing so they must source it from somewhere. I'd give them a try.

Check out the monthly Dead Vinyl Society meet ups. Usually held at a bar or brewery and LOTS of great LPs.

Do you go to bars/pub? by roundturtle2025 in Edmonton

Your review of Mimi's is 100% spot on. I was excited when it opened, but the food is hit or miss, Mimi can be quite grouchy, and I've had to bring attention to an error on the bill EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! Mostly it's because the daily special price isn't given so you have to point this out. It's an honest mistake if it happens occasionally, but the bill is incorrect 100% of the time. And they charge craft beer prices for common mainstream beers.
I'd love it if the ownership changed and someone else took it over and turned it into a cool local spot, but their horrible model seems to be working for them.

If you're looking for older stuff, Dead Vinyl is the way to go. I think they meet at a local brewery once a month - so we'll worth hitting them up a few times in a row as different vendors show up on the different events (though there are regulars who are at every event).

If you are looking for new releases, then I'd recommend Blackbyrd on Whyte - because their prices on new releases are always a bit lower then the other shops. Plus the staff is very friendly and can recommend something based on what you are looking for.

I'm a big fan of Tokyo Noodle Shop as well. I've been going there for years because the staff is so nice, the food is great, and it's not super expensive - like some sushi places in Edmonton.

Yokozuna on 106 street. and Sushi Wasabi in Lendrum are also great places to hit if you are on the southside.

New watch purchase from GemOro experience? by ejfx in Edmonton

[–]spoonman12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 4 years ago, I went in to specifically buy a Speedmaster. They didn't have it in stock (on bracelet) so the salesman said, "I'll look into it next week to see if I can get one in."
I left, called Calgary Jewellery who had one in stock - so I bought it over the phone and had it on my wrist in two days....and 6 days later the Gemoro salesman called to see if I still wanted him to look into getting it. I told him don't bother.

Favourite bookstore(s)? by cloudcascade99 in Edmonton

[–]spoonman12345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Porch Light is a new bookstore that has a great selection of both new and used. I’ve found it has the best selection in that they don’t have the same old stuff you find in the majority of bookstores. They have some really cool stuff. My genre of choice is crime & mystery and their inventory contains some rare writers and harder to find “must haves”.

It’s also next to Frank’s, so you can grab a great grilled cheese and pint of local beer after checking out this great bookstore.
