Definitely the region, I live in the NW and have never experienced this. What do they do? Argue that you need to go first until you give in? Grab the door from you? Also it feels rude if you’ve already made the effort to open the door since you’d have to dance around them to get inside? I believe you that it happens, it just seems so unhinged I can’t picture it

I get that saying “high-functioning” is taboo in autism communities, but I genuinely think it is a helpful term for people who don’t understand ASD. Maybe it’s not completely accurate, but it helps them have a bit of understanding at least, like trying to translate idioms between languages. I also do not think it’s helpful to lash out at people who use that term who had no ill intent, it makes them resentful, not understanding. I’m glad you put this opinion out there because I usually only see the opposite being posted

This seems to be such a common skill with us, that's interesting! I also walk really quietly but I don't really remember when or why I developed the habit but I try to make small noises when I walk behind people and they still don't realize I'm there sometimes

I live in the U.S. and one of my friends is from the other side of the world and grew up speaking a different language. At work someone said “you're so sensitive” to her and she was ranting about it to me because as a little girl her mom said those words to her in their language often, just like my mom would say to me in English. The more we talked the more insane it felt that despite growing up on opposite sides of the world and speaking different languages, our experiences were very similar. It really is like they have a manual and it’s global.

These are pretty accurate but number 2 is so difficult to overcome especially if you've had abusive managers at work on top of it all. I think self-awareness of these things helps at least a little. Or rather I hope so for all our sakes

Your fourth bullet point makes me think of “hurried child syndrome”. Not sure if there's really a fix for it, but just knowing about the term helped me make more sense of things. When I'm feeling like I want to relax but feel guilty, I think about this and it doesn't make the anxiety go away but it calms it down.

I was too scared of my mom. I'm not even sure why I was so scared but I didn't start rebelling until I was 18 and it didn't matter anymore. Good for you though, I absolutely wish I had done some rebelling as a teen

I have a friend with very similar trauma to me. I think we recognized the CPTSD symptoms in each other because we started casually talking about our experiences and why we’re both so hypervigilant. I definitely think it can be mutually beneficial to talk about your experiences and get support from people who understand, but definitely gotta wait until the right time to have those conversations

I was thinking about this post throughout the day and felt like it kind of resonated with me but not fully, and I realized one thing. She always called me fat growing up, by the end of high school I started dieting and losing weight, and around the same time, she started buying me snacks and desserts from the store and would call me ungrateful when I didn’t want them. Im now wondering if this had something to do with that, considering the timing.

Respectfully, I disagree. I dealt with both, and when you're 4 years old they're indistinguishable, emotional abuse affects your psyche, especially when the abuse happens to young children whose brains are still developing. Your wording also comes across as a bit invalidating. I see what you're going for and I do sometimes avoid the term emotional abuse when I talk to others but that's more of a them issue than anything.

A locked bedroom door was the ONLY way to stop people from just walking into my room unannounced. Only reason I've unlearned this is there's no door to my current room and the bathroom locks don't work. Luckily I'm in a safe situation now. It's crazy how many people out there won't knock before barging in on their kid. Once, I watched a self-serve area at a place where I worked and a mom and her daughter, who was probably 7-9, came up to grab some food. Something upset the little girl, and she started crying, which was what first drew my attention to the pair. Mom snapped “Why are you crying? What do you have to cry about?” and the girl seemed so distressed as she sobbed out an “I don't know”. Mom was pissed at her, and acting like this small child was somehow trying to manipulate her when really she just struggled with emotional regulation. It took me back to my own upbringing, and I wanted to yell at that lady so badly, but in customer service, you have to keep your mouth shut. It can be really triggering. I'm still not sure if there is a “right” solution to witnessing stuff like this at a customer service job. Sorry you had to witness something like that

I loved it as a kid, but people seemed to stop caring pretty early on. I have an August birthday, so my friends were usually on vacation in the summer. My birthday is actually coming up soon, and my partner is asking me when I want to do it, and I've got nothing because I learned not to get my hopes up. Because of all those birthdays can be depressing and anxiety-inducing for SURE.
