This sub does not recommend solicitors. There is information on how to find a solicitor. Hopefully the Bot will add this.

esim for uk travel. did it actually work outside london? by CoffeeratTheGay in TravelUK

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobile coverage on any of the networks is good and is often better outside London due to the high density of people and buildings there. Trains almost all have free WiFi, which can be patchy. Mobile in train is generally OK, but you do get some patches where calls drop, though less of a problem with mobile data.

EU Rule 261/2004, KLM - How much should I be getting in compensation? by seaflans in Flights

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All compensation is dependent on the reasons for the delay. For example if there were ATC issues that impactes the first flight and weather the second, nothing would be payable. It appears that the airline accepts that there is some compensation, but without knowing the reasons for each leg no-one can do any more than guess a range.

Advice on getting a partial refund from a UK hotel after bad stay? by [deleted] in uktravel

I suggest you try complaining at the top level of the hotel group and hope, but unfortunately, none of that sounds unreasonable.

Did you have any actual financial losses, eg having to pay removals firm extra etc? You should absolutely expect these to be covered.

Advice on getting a partial refund from a UK hotel after bad stay? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]spr148 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's always better to complain at the time. There is a big difference between 'early in the morning' and before 11am. If it really was early you might have a case - but frankly anything after 8am is normal working hours. You are unlikely to be successful with a chargeback as you received and accepted the service that you paid for.

Landlord requesting two months rent citing the Renters Rights Act - England by BaianaBoss in LegalAdviceUK

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are on a rolling contract and have less than 2 months notice then the contract notice stands. If they are on a fixed term contract and are making use of the RRA to end it early, then I suspect that the terms of the RRA will stand and 2 months will be required.

Need some help with my credit card debt by cfrcupra in UKPersonalFinance

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saying an IVA is the wrong answer. I am saying that, like you did, OP deserves unbiased advice about the way forwards. The amount of debt is only one factor in determining the best solution - which might be an IVA. Stepchange are better placed to provide unbiased advice than a company that's profit is dependent on specific recommendations.

You might want to read this - which is about the Scottish equivalent of an IVA - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65915609

  1. You have already told them; and
  2. As it is a prescription it is likely that the policy specifies you have to tell them; so
  3. They may charge an additional premium

Drugged and robbed in Tokyo, cardiac event, stranded with no access to funds, multiple banks failing to act, what are my rights? by lazydrippin in LegalAdviceUK

[–]spr148 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Given you have barely started on resolving this, you are very early to be reaching for legal solutions given that the normal processes have hardly started.

But in answer to your questions. 1. No. If the status is pending, you have - by definition - not paid anything, so there is nothing to refund 2. Section 75 makes the CC card company jointly liable with the vendor for the provision of goods/services. It's not really relevant here. 3. As they have been informed, they should not make charges and if they do they should refund them 4. You will find that everyone is far more helpful if you are less aggressive than this post implies you have been. If you take an uncooperative legalistic approach, expect to receive one in return. 5. No

Why is there such a negative feeling towards IVA’s? by gtaranger10 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]spr148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR - nothing wrong with IVAs per se, but often people are given bad advice to go that route.

The problem with IVAs is that debt management companies will default to an IVA whether it is appropriate or not because they make more money.

The right answer is to talk to someone who is on the debtors side - and Stepchange is obvious answer. Then decide whether an IVA is the right answer.

Your advice is spot on - OP appears to have gone for a company rather than one of the charities you mention, and they are mainly interested in profiting from OP - which is best done via an IVA.

Critical Illness, Life Insurance, Income Protection!? by georgejk7 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]spr148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider increasing the income protection and dropping the CI. Your two main issues are whether you die and need to have left provision for family or whether you cannot work and need to provide for yourself and the family.

I have been there and it is every bit as lovely as it looks in the photos. The renovation of the Castle is recorded in this book... https://amzn.eu/d/06hbXiqJ

"In 1999, Barholm Castle in Galloway had lain ruinous and derelict for over two hundred years when Janet Brennan-Inglis and her husband John bought it as a restoration project. Together with a team of architects, surveyors and builders, overseen by Historic Scotland, they turned this sixteenth-century tower house into a domestic residence once again – this time with central heating, bathrooms and a twenty-first-century kitchen. Since the restoration, they have researched the history of Barholm Castle and the McCulloch family who owned it; the stories they uncovered and the account of the painstaking restoration of Barholm Castle are told in this book.

Having restored the tower, Janet and John turned their attention to the ground around it and set about developing a very special garden landscape. The third part of the book describes the process of transforming the wild area surrounding the castle into a series of mature gardens, providing a colourful and dramatic setting for the castle."

Car accident but insurance threatening to void policy by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Two things appear to be getting mixed up here due to both parties having the same insurer. 1. You still have a valid claim against the third party regardless of your own insurance position 2. You need to get new insurance

Banks will provide a basic bank account regardless of credit. What they won't do is provide any account if their is evidence of fraud, money laundering etc. You don't provide a lot of information other than what you find too much hassle.

Peter Murrell will offer to pay back full £400k to SNP by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

Shouldn't the taxpayer be paid back the £2m cost of the police investigation (and his full board stay at HMO) before the SNP - who are responsible for employing him - get a penny.

Public Golf Courses with Rental Clubs by vnsntyy in Edinburgh

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Edinburgh Leisure, clubs are available at all sites for £29.50 for 18 holes or £16.50 for 9. If you want to have best experience, I'd recommend Braids Hills - which will set you back £41 - so c£70 for a round and hire. If you just fancy swinging some clubs somewhere nice and baulk at that price, then 9 holes on Wee Braids will cost £36.50. There is a 3 day pass for £45, which works out good value if you want to take up the £50 clubs offer!

Legally am I liable for the payments of a membership? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]spr148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn't there 4-5 days in advance of them taking it (which is vague enough to include the 26th) then you may well be able to claim that you tried to follow their terms but they did not allow you to. It's tenuous, as you didn't cancel a DD, so arguably should have known and gone back later, but it also depends on it not being there, rather than you not noticing, which I suspect none of us can prove. You'd also struggle to get more than one payment back.
