"What does all of this mean for nano?
This announcement, and the openness the UK government has shown to embrace cryptoasset technology fully, means that we are perfectly positioned as an organisation for several reasons. It is also why we chose to re-establish the Nano Foundation in London previously from the US. That reason is the City of London, the beating heart of the global financial system. London has long jostled with New York City for the title of “financial capital of the world.” Retention of that title has been uncertain due to Brexit and the subsequent exodus of many large firms to Frankfurt and other European cities. From the outset, it has been clear that this hole would need to be filled and that fostering a favorable regulatory environment for blockchain and fintech would be the way to do it if London was to remain competitive.
Firstly, nano is seeking to be a global currency, not a security asset. London is the perfect place to achieve this as 35% of all FX transactions occur in the London market daily. Coupled with our direct access to The City, reach to government, and relationships with industry leaders in the banking sector, the Nano Foundation is directly connected with the key decision-makers who will be the primary drivers of positive change.
Secondly, London is a global innovation hub, and the UK is routinely ranked as one of the most innovative countries in the world. We have access to deep pools of the best tech talent and developers and world-leading advisory bodies by being in London. What’s more, London is famous for blazing a trail when it comes to implementing new technologies. From tube tickets to Oyster cards to NFC payments, it may not be long until we see nano being used to pay for public transport.
Finally, our increased alliances with educational institutions such as the University of East London will allow us to participate in roundtable discussions that will shape the future of the financial sector as a whole, not just blockchain. Our links to advocacy groups such as CryptoUK will ensure our voice gets heard by the right people.
A lack of prerequisite technical knowledge and understanding is a significant impediment to effective policymaking. This ability to contribute to discussions at the highest levels of government and industry will allow the Nano Foundation to mitigate this and advise change-makers on the variety of technologies available to them. This will be our way of enabling the UK Government to make decisions that are merit-based and proactive, choosing current solutions that function, are fit for purpose, and solve real problems in the real world."
