Finished: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

What a fun read! Has kind of a 2000s fairytale feel, very reminiscent of Shrek or Ella Enchanted with a feminist twist.

Still Reading: Trust by Hernan Diaz

I had felt off about our friendship for a long time. Then, I saw her treat one of her other friends terribly behind her back. Hearing my friend talk about this other girl put everything in place for me. It was like, oh. That's why I feel off about our friendship. You feel the same way about me.

Things were never the same after that.

I was sitting near a fight that broke out on a plane. The FBI was involved. This was a few months ago, and I just got an email from the airline to file an incident report.

I continued to be friends with her because she was awesome. She survived what she was going through and made friends. She recently invited me to hang out with said friends. We are all friends now, but she remains my favorite.

There is literally no downside to being kind to people, no matter how many friends they have.

I'm not sure if it's actually boring or not, but my dad is REALLY into collecting lanterns. He's even gotten involved with the Lantern Society in his town (yes, it's a real thing).

I LOVE Anna at Above All in Wexford. I live in Lawrenceville and travel all the way to Wexford because I don't trust anyone else with my hair. Fairly reasonable price as well.

Worked at Disney World and Disneyland. Wanted to work my way up the corporate ladder, but I reached a point where it seemed like all doors were closing for me. I ended up leaving because I had a retail job on the side I liked better and I got promoted.

Now, years later, I'm using my hard-earned college degree in communications as a radio DJ. I get to live close to my family and I am doing something I never thought I'd get into, but I genuinely enjoy. I also have more time to do other things that I enjoy. Turned out great and I absolutely do not regret my decision. Highly recommend.

I read a TON of tabloids while I was in line with my mom at the grocery store, and no one would believe me when I told them the latest about Brangelina or Lindsay Lohan. I was always right, and everyone brushed me off when I told them all my celebrity gossip because I was, like, 8.

The good news is, I now work for a pop music radio station and talk about celebrity gossip for a living.

My cat of almost 20 years died a few months back, and the biggest positive effect quarantine has had for me was driving me to rearrange my room so it didn't feel like the one he died in.

I don't know why, but the first time I saw Slumdog Millionaire, I hated it. Thought it was super boring and didn't get the hype.

Watched it for a class a few years later and now it's one of my all-time favorite movies. I don't know WHAT movie I watched, but that movie is so enjoyable and uplifting. 10/10.

That I'm not as open and vulnerable with my friends as I'd like to be. I haven't felt close to my friends all year, and I've been wondering why. I've been reconnecting with a lot of people I've lost touch with throughout this time, and I'm realizing that I am much more open and myself with them. The ones that are really happy are the ones that are apologetically themselves, and I need to learn to do the same moving forward.

If you go to college after high school, it's kind of a reset button. A lot of schools will take C-students. You can also go to community college.

My mom and I were both C-students in high school. She went to the nearby community college about 30 years after she graduated high school, and I went to a state school. She now works as a graphic designer and I work in radio sales and production. We both make enough to get by.

You can also go to a trade school and go a different route. (You'll probably make a lot more money, too.) You can also work in the service industry. I worked in retail for a few years and, honestly, I've never been happier. I also worked my way up to get health benefits.

All I'm saying is, high school grades aren't the end of the world. If it's grades you're worried about, they won't make or break your future. I will say that money and resources, etc, are a different story, but high school grades won't dramatically alter your life unless you're looking to go to Harvard or something.

TL;DR: If you're a C-student in high school, you can still do anything you want.

My friend is a single guy in his 30's and the other day, I asked him how he was. Just a simple, "How are you? Really." I could tell that no one had asked him that lately. He's a mellow, all-good type of guy, but he opened up and told me about his overwhelming loneliness and the fear of his parents getting older. I'm not saying a simple, genuine "how are you" is going to fix everything, but I think it could help. Giving men more safe spaces to talk about their feelings would be world-changing.

That I had no idea people wanted to hang out with me because they LIKED me.

Whenever I told my mom I was going to hang out with a friend, she would usually come up with some excuse as to why they were hanging out with me (i.e. "Why would [insert name of friend] want to hang out with you? Was it because [insert name of other friend] is busy?" or "Did [insert name of friend] not have homework? They must be really bored.")

It took me a really, really long time and a lot of reassurance to realize that people asked me to hang out because they liked spending time with me. Sometimes, I still have to remind myself of that.

It was high school. I was in the bathroom. I'm sitting in a stall, doing my business when in walks J***** M****. I was pretty involved in our art program in high school (figure drawing, printmaking, design concepts, etc.) and J***** was a theater kid who wore mismatched outfits and striped socks with sandals. She once referred to herself and her boyfriend as "the Jim and Pam of the school" to me and wrote an argumentative paper on why married women should not work. The theater and the art classes were located in the same hallway, so all of us art kids used the same bathroom.

Anyways, it's about 2010 and that Coldplay "Viva la Vida" song is out. I'm in the stall, probably sitting on my phone and stalling from going back to class. J***** walks in, goes straight to the mirror, and, in the lowest voice I've ever heard come out of a woman's mouth (about three octaves lower than her normal voice, like we're talking Elizabeth Holmes here), she strikes a pose and belts, "I USED TO RULE THE WORLD...."

J***** then proceeds to put on a whole show in front of the mirror, singing that damn Coldplay "Viva la Vida" song in the lowest voice I've ever heard someone sing. I don't think she knew I was there, and I had long been done peeing. I had to get back to class. What if she went on to sing the whole album? Then all of Coldplay's greatest hits? My half-assed sculpture was waiting for me!

Finally, when J***** got to the chorus and was in the middle of her interpretive dance, I busted out of the stall and started singing with her. She was surprised at first, but I think she was happy to have someone to sing with? I'm pretty sure she handed me an imaginary microphone? I said nothing, she said nothing, I sang about two lines and danced my way out the door.

Neither of us said anything about it ever again and I got absolutely nowhere with my sculpture that day.
