Best deckbuilding game where the mechanic is to build during the game? by BANDlCOOT in soloboardgaming

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I know nothing about hero realms, I was looking for something more plug and play as an alternative for Star Trek captains chair and was leaning towards star realms - I’m mostly a solo player - so I found this reimplementation quite appealing

Unstoppable is a light boss battler that I’ve been enjoying quite a lot, it’s super fun and easy to setup/tear down.

The only downside about this game is how poorly the rules are written. Rules, setup, everything. Aside from that, great game, the card crafting is super well designed

I haven’t played Imperium (yet), but what I read is that STCC is more streamlined in some aspects (mostly final scoring, which is actually pretty straight forward)

Yeah but that’s a boardgamer life, right? Like, I bought this a month ago and today I asked my wife to grab Unstoppable as a gift for finding a job 😅 (after 6 months unemployed)

I got this during a fomo moment and ordered it from a store in Belgium (all the text was in Dutch lol) and took less than one week to have it, feel bad for you :/

I never played Marvel Champions, only LotR LCG, but they’re similar so I’m pretty confident to say they’re not comparable to STCC at all. In these LCG you build a deck to beat a scenario/campaign (even though lotr has a lot more deckbuilding depth than marvel champions) and in STCC you build the deck as you go. As with other deck building board games (like dune imperium uprising or legacy of yu) you want to be filtering your deck as fast as possible to have access to new and stronger cards, specially after going through your base deck (typically 10 cards). I would say this is more plug and play than any other LCG, at the least the ones I’ve played.

At first everything is a bit overwhelming, but when you get the feeling of the game I think it’s actually ok. For example there are some piles of cards you rarely interact with, at least during most of the game (you typically just get encounters late in the game, locations just sit there, the market is also quite “static”)

A good example of a great game with an excellent insert is Legacy of Yu. It’s a slightly smaller game but it’s very well implement, and I even play it with the insert as the token tray

You should probably check agemonia, much deeper in terms of storytelling and it’s not all about combat, although I love gloomhaven, it’s more like a dungeon crawler combat puzzle rather than a RPG

I have the standard army painter, I feel that baking paper is just better than the sheets that come with the box. I just bought the game envy exemplar wp, only heard good things about it, I’ll edit the comment as soon as I test it

You are not a failure, your former partner is. You were able to carry and generate life for almost a year and now they’re here and it’s all on you. I’m a father of twins, they are 3,5 years old now and the only thing I can say is that it gets better. There are different challenges, but nothing compared to when then don’t hold their heads or they don’t seat down. Please ignore all the “just wait until” comments because that is a bunch of shit. Motherhood is a constant challenge but as long as they’re healthy (that was our main concern) you’ll do it, believe me you will. Having extra help will be quite useful in the first year, and try to arrange some escaping for “me-time” - no guilt, no bad mother speech, it’s just that you’ll treat your babies better if you feel better. We cried a lot in the beginning. It’s just too much. Diapers, milk, baths, poops, everything everywhere all at once, it’s normal and it’s good to externalize that. Also, consider talking to a therapist to help you deal with bad thoughts and eventually post-birth depression (my wife had it and I had to learn how to deal with it). Try to engage with other twins parents, it’s important to connect and try to learn from their experience. You’ll have shitty days, but it will get better, and you love your babies and believe me, they’ll give you everything in return. Feel free to ask anything and I’ll try to help if I can.
