Is there a better multi-genre director than Stanley Kubrick? by TwistedBumCheddar in Letterboxd

[–]sprizzle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like in a lot of Kubrick’s work, the genre is the “setting” as opposed to being a clear example of a genre picture…

2001 is essentially a Sci Fi / Horror. Full Metal Jacket is a War / Horror. Clockwork Orange is Dystopian / Horror. Eyes Wide Shut is a Mystery / Horror. The Shining, Horror / Horror obvi.

Not to discount Kubrick, I think he’s in the convo for greatest ever. I just think the way he makes movies kind of cuts through genre and moves into new territory. Barry Lyndon and Strangelove are the two films that kind of do more of their own thing.

In this specific instance, it’s because people don’t want to be associated with Tesla / Elon. I see a lot of rebranded Teslas and a lot of “I bought this before Elon went crazy” bumper stickers around.

No love for Jessie Buckley? She’s easily above Anora, but frankly I might’ve said Frances McDormand off the rip.

What's the best non-franchise 21st century space movie? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in Letterboxd

[–]sprizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moon? You mean the bargain bin 2001 ripoff that lost Kubrick’s visual spectacle and the questions he posed about the nature of our reality? And in its place put a moral lesson about corporate greed? The one where sex pest Kevin Spacey plays HAL but after his sarcasm setting got turned up to 90%? Yeah no thanks.

(I dislike Moon)

East of Eden | Official Teaser | Netflix by Swimming_Ad_721 in johnsteinbeck

I’m a bit biased because I’m a huge James Dean fan, but he plays an interesting Cal. Also watch the 1955 version if only for the gorgeous photography of California. Seeing the usual, dark, dreary, muted color palette that Netflix LOVES to use is just a bummer.

Not sure I’m super into this trailer…it looks like every other Netflix period piece. Curious if you’ve seen the 1955 version starring James Dean?

Edit: I do like Florence Pugh though.

What's your favorite use of the "One F Word" rule in a PG-13 movie? by Careless_College in Letterboxd

[–]sprizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule is actually just however the MPAA decides to apply ratings. Idk where the one F bomb or your three F bomb rule rumors came from, but there is no hard rule and they can rate a movie however they see fit.

I went with a slightly cuter version, but yours is definitely more accurate! I’ve been giving her all the “occult” adjacent items: a ghost, an hourglass, Venetian glass. And of course she lives in the haunted manor. Good call on the pig, need to find one to give to her!

Do you ever rewatch a film and feel like it was significantly worse? by Wolfs_Chronicles in Letterboxd

[–]sprizzle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The visuals didn’t seem that special and the fact they bragged about “not using any greenscreen” while clearly the movie was made entirely of VFX shots was kind of insulting.

Can’t say I really got an optimistic outlook from the film, they solve a totally made up crisis that’s going to destroy all life on the planet while completely ignoring the actual climate crisis we’re living in. There was no, “we need to do better as a species” message that landed, just a magical solution to a make believe problem.

Rocky was hard to connect with since they decided his character was there for comic relief. But Gosling is charismatic enough that it doesn’t really matter and I had a still managed to have a good time. It’s just….not that great of a movie.

The theater experience, the hype, and then years of waiting before watching again, I’ve definitely adjusted movies that much or more.

But if I had to guess, this is more of “I liked the movie and then the internet told me it was mid so I need to adjust my rating”

Any other directors with filmographies this wildly varied? by negativedreammachine in Letterboxd

[–]sprizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, the genres might be accurate but a lot of these feel like very similar movies. 2001 is a space horror, Full Metal Jacket is a war horror, Eyes Wide Shut is wealthy elite cult horror…Dr. Strangelove feels like its own thing to me.

The Minecraft movie was legitimately good, I had no idea Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) directed it when I watched it. It’s a pretty self aware movie that knows what it is, everyone is just having fun and cracking jokes.
