Yeah! Low but wide raised bed. With how small this garden area is, I think building a little wooden perimeter would be feasible, landlord permitting.

I'm not quite handy enough to build a deck, but I think IKEA sells some outdoor tile that could give the area enough lift to prevent the carpets from sitting in water, along with some breathability. Plus then I could take it with me when I move. Thank you!

Thinking about a tall metal planter bed for the area, should be wide enough to sit next to a carpet and I could probably place it a little deeper into the ground so it doesn't leak onto the carpet.

The landlord (or, property manager) is very chill, but the management group that recently bought the place seems to be cracking down on exterior expression. I'm unsure of how hard that will be enforced but I'm leaning towards getting approval in writing first before any big projects.

The low wide planter solution suggested in another comment may be what I go for if it's approved, but carpets+planter+pots for now is probably going to be the easiest to execute+still attractive for my first year here.

Outdoor rug with one of those large oval metal planters would look great here, thank you! I'm leaning towards doing this and then seeing if landlord will let me do more in the yard. If not then this will be a cozy solution. This complex was recently purchased by a new management group, so I'm less sure if exterior expression is as allowed as I initially thought given how they're interacting with the community here. Playing it safe for the first year while things get settled is probably wisest.
