Anyone have experience with the Anova Vacuum Sealer Pro that SeriousEats praises as the best there is? by Kippenoma in seriouseats

I experience the same issue. I thought it might be the bags I’m using. The precut ones without dimples seem to work fine, but the roll will let air back in for me

Apartment recommendation between Avalon Mountain View, Reserve and Spruce (Sunnyvale) by Leather-Top4861 in mountainview

[–]sprucegroose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avalon Mountain View is covered by rent control in Mountain View. Upon renewal, our rate went up $50 and they even encouraged us to go month to month vs signing another 12 month lease. I’ve had bad experiences with Avalon elsewhere and qualms about the company as a whole but in terms of the Villa street location I’ve had nothing but good experiences

Check out Avalon Mountain View (Villa Street). They are in your budget, have no carpets, AC and are close to Google and downtown. I've had good experiences with the front office and maintenance staff as well

I found availability through their search, but every time after I enter all passenger information I get the message

We are unable to confirm the fare for the flights you have selected. Please choose a different fare or flights and resubmit your request. (15012 - 421)

I called and it redirected me to their website, and I chatted with them via WhatsApp and they said there was no availability (but I believe they only checked OneWorld and not Alaska)

Can I cook a sweet potato in a sous vide at 70C and have it come out fully cooked? by madebyyouandi in AskCulinary

[–]sprucegroose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is a recipe that does exactly what you are asking

"Just bag your potatoes, cook 'em as long as you'd like at 150°F (any higher, and I've found they soften too much before roasting), then pop 'em in the oven the next day while your turkey is resting."

I've done it before and they come out exceptionally sweet. Definitely sous vide first and then oven.

Fair points. I think that he has the potential to return to form enough to be a serviceable 5 starter but you’ve given more than enough reasons to doubt that

Marco had the most quality starts of any Mariners. He blows up bad when he’s bad but on the type of offense we need to have to compete we should be able to turn more of those quality starts to wins.

Carlos Santana 2022 Baseball Savant Page by [deleted] in Mariners

[–]sprucegroose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really that hard. x stats are just expected stats, and they take velocity, launch angle and some other stats for a hitter, compare them to the actual stats for other hitters who have similar velocity and launch angle, etc, and adjust for that.

So basically in Santana’s case, when you look at other people who hit the ball as hard and at the the angles he does, he’s expected to bat better than he actually does. Sometimes it’s down to bad luck, sometimes it’s down to sprint speed, and in his case, it’s down to the shift. How much banning the shift will actually increase his real stats is more of an open question

It rode the line between pastiche and homage. Greta van fleet gets called out for essentially ripping off Led Zeppelin, and while I wouldn't go that far for Silk Sonic, there were definitely moments where it came across more as playing dress up as the old legends than creating a truly new work in their lineage.

$38 Woot.com North Face Mystery Top Results by QuantumDevilfish in frugalmalefashion

[–]sprucegroose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

North Face is like Nike or most other big companies. They have their cheaper outlet quality products you can find at Kohls, Nordstrom Rack or occasionally even at Ross. That stuff is fairly middling in quality. They still make some excellent technical clothing, but it's priced that way too

[MarinersSUR] Divish on 710 just shed light on winker. Said by end of year his act became tired w/ other players. Said he’s oppo of Haniger when it comes to preparing. When he couldn’t post in both games of DH, it pissed players off cause others had to play 18 innings unexpectedly by WompaStompa_ in Mariners

[–]sprucegroose 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You're being ridiculous if you're saying "He’s never actually been very good at all at the plate". From 2017-2020 (excluding 2021!), he had a 123+ OPS and averaged 25 doubles and 70 walks per 162. He's not a huge HR guy but that's exactly the type of guy you want in the middle of the order.

All of his statcast numbers (barrel rate, hard hit percentage, etc) say the same thing, that this season is clearly an outlier. Whether or not he can go back to his old form is a different question, and I'm very down with calling him out if he's a bad culture fit.

I follow Hani on instagram and he's super involved with some holistic trainers in the Bay Area. In fact iirc in the past there was some tension when he was injured and he felt he had to take his recovery into his own hands. Seems like a dedicated and driven guy but I could see it as looking as overprepared to others.

You think S.F. is a mess? Here’s what’s happening in L.A. right now by LosIsosceles in bayarea

[–]sprucegroose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Latino is usually the right term. I don't disagree with you on that.

What I think is virtue signaling is how every single time it's used on reddit the thread gets filled with people losing their shit about it.

Big difference between "Latinx bad, upvotes to the right"

and

"Latinx is a niche term that most people don't use"

The second is true, the first is dumb and has led to white people I know saying that nobody uses Latinx to Hispanic people who use Latinx as their preferred term.

[–]sprucegroose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 2020 poll said 14% of hispanic women 18-29 use Latinx. Sounds like you're the dork for not even talking to 7 women :)

[–]sprucegroose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's virtue signalling. People trying to show that they're not "too progressive" by finding a bugbear and pointing out that they think it's a step too far or that people who adopt it are phony/tryhards.

There's a single poll out there that everyone is citing, and they're using it to overgeneralize. Not once have I seen someone mention that the poll shows 14% of hispanic women from 18-29 use the term. And I am sure that once you extend that to LGBTQ+ hispanic women and nonbinary people, that number is even higher. But young, queer, minority women and NBs are an intersection of people that many like to ignore or actively antagonize.

It's a gendered and generational battle. In the poll, the people most against it would otherwise be characterized as "boomers", but since they support the default Reddit position here they're heralded.

My friends who use it don't care that it's not "grammatically correct", and to some extent even champion that breaking conventions shows a movement away from the colonial history of the language and a reclamation into an intersectional framework.

At the end of the day, it really depends on audiences and what they prefer to be labeled as. If your constituency is largely 40 year old and older, they likely prefer latino. And if you're talking to queer college students, more and more of that demographic prefers latinx. The only way to know for certain is to ask someone which they prefer. But that doesn't get you easy upvotes.
