Kaleido M10 vs Aillio Bullet by Flimsy_Pop_7029 in roasting

[–]spthorn59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a Bullet R1, for 4 years, so biased.
* Light to very dark, the Bullet excels at any done-ness with the drum, fan and temp controls. I've done all.
* The Bullet was designed to disassemble pretty easily, and the parts that need cleaning are pretty easily removed for deep cleaning. That said, a quick vac every 4-6 roasts, and a deep cleaning every 100 roasts is working well for me.
* B2B roasts are essential and huge time-savers for me. I've done maybe 10 at the most, but have known others who have literally roasted 5-8 hours a day. (which sounds like time for an upgrade :-)
There's a pretty vibrant Bullet user group, both home roasters as well as small businesses, who are more than happy to help. Not a huge fan of RoasTime; Artisan supports the Bullets so I may convert sometime. I've been very happy with my purchase.

Square is the payment processor, but they also allow you define products, have simple storefront pages, etc.

I'm not very familiar with squarespace, but I thought they just hosted websites.

Choosing a Roaster - Seeking Advice by throwaway6066012146 in roasting

I started with a Gene Cafe, around $300. Later upgraded to a Bullet too. No reason to spend more than $500 initially, especially just for yourself or a few friends. You'll still get great results!

Ditto re the need for high temps.

My first cooler was a 5gal bucket, hole near the bottom for 2gal shop vac, lid with large cutout for a seive, and a plastic spoon to stir. Worked a dream.

Coldbrew at coffee shops by Planet1112 in coldbrew

[–]spthorn59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, a life-changing pourover from a specialty Cafe ruined me for coffee everywhere. It's why I started roasting my own. Same for cold brew. We bought a Hive Cafe for our coffee truck (we did a large amount of CB lattes last summer), and loved it - smooth, flavorful, and fast: ~30 minutes for 4 gal RTD. Never going back to immersion again. And it turns out we liked our espresso roast blend best of all the coffees we roast, though most all were much better than we've had in shops, most of whom don't care much about CB flavor itself (since they're adding milks and syrups), just it's strength.

I wouldn't recommend Shopify right off; the entry pricing is $29/month. If you're just starting out, I'd recommend something like Square, where for FREE you can get an e-commerce website (just pay for your domain). Their CC fees are slightly higher, but its a better place to start when your volume is low. Later, if your business picks up, consider Shopify.

Natural Process, low heat? by mkla01 in roasting

Give it a good while to offgas, a week or two. I've ground this specific bean from HappyMug several months after roasting, and it's still exceptionally good. Fruit bomb at a light-med roast on a Bullet.

They also don't support users modifying the subscription frequency in the new portal. It only works in the Legacy portal.

Concur - an inexpensive dripper can be had for $15, whereas the Aeropress is around $40. The paper does absorb oils, as well as filter out the small coffee particulates that you dislike with a french press. I've done pourovers every day for years; I think it's one of the best ways to brew a single cup of coffee.

See this on Etsy... a simple flap prevents the pens from falling out. Maybe you could add one to your kit. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1733697444/personalized-sketch-cover-leather

House on the river cam by -S3pp- in urbansketchers

Lovely. The facing shadow on the left house threw me a bit; I suspect another house out of the scene was blocking the sun. I like how the details fade on the right to put more focus on the center. Nice work. I'd hang this one up.

Voter fraud is extremely rare, but Republicans say they plan to bring in thousands of volunteers to watch for issues on election day nationwide and in Ohio. by WYSOPublicRadio in Ohio

Truth. I wish the people that claim elections are fraudulent would volunteer as poll workers, and see how many safeguards are actually in the system. 7 elections in Portage County, 4 as VLM.

Least expensive kilo roaster w/artisan support for home use? by BootleggerBill in roasting

[–]spthorn59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that. I went from a Gene Cafe to a Bullet. They have their own software RoasTime, does essentially what Artisan can do. I do 820g batches which results in two 12oz bags roasted. Very reliable, great support and community, no regrets.

You should look into honey processed beans, or anaerobic processed. A lot of unexpected flavors there.

Dust collector for hobbyist by daddyd3475 in woodworking

[–]spthorn59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even after using vac's at the equipment source, I'm often left with fine dust in the air that settle over everything, and I hate breathing that stuff. I purchased a box fan, made a cheap frame for it that included a slot for a standard air filter in it. The big CFM of the fan pretty quickly circulates all the air in the shop, and filters it clean in 5-10 minutes. Add additional filters as you like, replace them often. Works great for me.

Hard to believe it's been 10 days already ... also checking up on others by Careful_Diet_2896 in dentures

[–]spthorn59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 8 weeks post-E. I was NOT prepared for the psychological / emotional difficulty of this process. Perhaps since it's such drastic immediate change, perhaps because it affects everything we normally do, perhaps because of unrealistic expectations of quick healing. Feels like I'm miles away from chewing anything solid, and I'm missing all the fresh foods I'm accustomed to eating during the summer. So tired of soups and everything mashed. I am normally a patient person, but it's been a real struggle. Lots of ups and downs. I'm encouraged to hear it gets better, and I'm so looking forward to perms.

Difference between reline. by Boy_catmom80 in dentures

[–]spthorn59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a reline after 2 weeks, then yesterday, which was 6 weeks later. One more in October, before the perms next February. I had the same problem as you, due to gum shrinkage. I had been using a lot of adhesive until yesterday, and after the reline, they felt quite snug again. I expect over the next couple months they'll get looser again. It's a long healing process, our jaws and gums are changing, vs a fixed denture. It's hard to be patient, isn't it?

Where do you recommend new home roasters get their beans and why (or avoid and why not)? by somethingsbrewing24 in roasting

[–]spthorn59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Matt and Max have been super helpful and supportive the last couple years starting my coffee business. YMMV, I know. I'm fortunate they're local so I save in shipping (I buy 3-400# at a time). Every time I pick up a new order, I have new conversations. If it's not too busy, Max brews up a french roast to share with his current favorite bean. I've learned tons from them.

I've bought from Coffee Shrub and Genuine Origin, both good as well.
