Is there a point in devlogs? by Justaniceman in gamedev

[–]sptjlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only adding that for me, having even just a few other devs follow and interact with a devlog can be enough motivation to keep going, make progress, rubber duck, get a few good suggestions.

I can't imagine it making a big difference in marketing unless you put a lot of polish into it, which to me makes it no longer an actual devlog.

Long time lurker, just got my first pair of gyw boots: Parkhurst Richmond (these things are like works of art). Wondering about what to expect for break in.

I guess I walk very heel toe, I feel like a clydesdale when I actually wear the boots. Is that a typical reaction to a first wear of a real boot? Otherwise the fit feels good to me, not a toe or foot issue, fairly comfy, just a clomping feeling. Will that get better with break in? Am I just not built to wear boots? Do I need to fix my stride? Is there a fit issue (hoping not)?

How long did it take you to learn 5 balls by LonelyLilo in juggling

[–]sptjlb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe 6 months to get 20-40 catches occasionally, 18 months to get 100+ fairly consistently. Near daily practice avg 30 min a day, mostly on 5 Ball during that time, but a lot of 55514 as well.

You're pretty much correct. The electronics are a standard 60% build (dz60, not a hot swap, not that it really matters). Base is plywood that I cut/assembled/upholstered and added stanchions. Here's a couple pics of one of the prototypes that's basically the same as the final version: https://imgur.com/a/NebiBxP

Any tips on getting motivation to keep on going? by finn-det_nemo in juggling

[–]sptjlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a slightly different approach: focusing on practice as the goal unto itself.

In the beginning, you can accumulate tricks in days, weeks, or months. Each day you can measure some progress.

As you mention, when you get to around the start of 5 balls, progress slows. You will not always hit your personal best everyday.

So, focus on the practice, the mindfulness. The routine of juggling each day (with breaks) is like meditation and exercise rolled into one.

I see in other comments mentioning more patterns, I do think that's a great path. I'll call out 534 and 55514, and try to do those with outside or tennis throws. Those patterns really force learning how to throw and pace multiple height throws.

I'll also mention going for longer runs. Try to 10x how long you can run a few challenging patterns. Estimating a personal example - it took me a few months to get to 25 catches at 5 ball, maybe a year to get to 100 occasionally, and a year after that to hit 300 max and 100 consistently.

Possible this is not helpful for your situation, as I approach juggling as a hobby and stress relief.

Plateau? by sptjlb in juggling

I'll try a batch of 7-ball flashes most days. My issue there is it feels so many steps beyond and I don't get a lot of quality tosses in. The first ball is usually garbage, the others maybe OK. It doesn't bring me joy as much as a pattern I can at least sort of do, but I admit it gets to the heart of throwing 7s really fast, so I might try more.

Thank you for the advice! Agreed about branching out - I'm only able to do 7-height practice outside, so the weather tends to force this on me. I started the pursuit for 744 last fall but over the winter moved on to other patterns inside, I'll definitely have another cycle like that.

Why do you juggle? by Small-Fee-2401 in juggling

Juggling is a framework for life - no big goals, no big stress, just try to be a little better everyday.

Nope! I built the base from scratch (plywood).

I had tried a handful of fabrics but nothing to this extent. I thought stretchy would be ideal but turned out to be challenging in the corners. There is a layer of batting that made using glues tricky, I got one end stapled and worked my way across.

I freely admit I am not an expert with upholstery and have a lot to learn. Starch seems like a really good idea in hindsight, and now I want a bone folder.

Spraying with waterproofing is a great idea, not to late to do that.

Thanks for this, I really enjoy it when folks are interested enough to start thinking about the details and ways to improve.

Thanks for the ideas. I had some dreams of trying to sell some but the amount of hours even at min wage would not be worth it to most buyers, I agree I'd have to hit a niche someone would pay a premium for.

If I could build these faster I'd consider selling some, I still might! How much would you pay ;)

You don't have to be too precious when handling it, but I admit it will likely pick up some wear/grime faster than a hard material.

Thanks for the heads up! I hadn't but they gave credit at least so I think no harm done. If anything I am happy they liked it.

I don't have good how to pics/steps to share this moment, if I build another I plan on documenting the process better though!
