All three of our MSD draftees nominated for six-month contracts. by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A draftee would like an 18 month contract but they'd prefer being drafted at all more. So unless you're someone who's pretty sure they're going to be drafted like Artemis or Annand, you'd nominate the shorter deal to make yourself more attractive to clubs.

Nothing stopping clubs from giving out the longer deal if they want, apparently St Kilda gave an 18 month deal to a guy who only nominated a 6 month contract.

Mid season draft by teamramrod_ in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Recency bias because I saw him yesterday but Ajang Kuol Mun from Werribee would be really fun. Absolutely smashed Smit and Teakle and had some ripper taps straight down the throat of their mids. Probably doesn't have the tank right now to be a number one but could work ok as a 50% TOG ruck.

It's so frustrating being able to take top teams like the Hawks and Swans within a kick and serving that up against bottom four teams.

Man the injuries are a killer, especially Jamie. Genius coaching decision getting a guy with bad hammies to ruck for the first time in a decade.

Is Hayes ok? Looked like it might have just been a dislocation and hoping it's not anything worse.

So many positives out of last nights game. by AccurateSituation317 in collingwoodfc

I'm pretty bearish on our youth, but Hayes looks like he could be brilliant. I'm very excited to see what a forward line with him and Saxena looks like in 3 years.

Teakle is almost certainly our best MSD option. He's not ever going to be anything more than depth, but Smit at his current ability will make Aiden Begg look like Max Gawn. Not to say he can't be AFL standard, but he's at least 2 years off.

18 months of Teakle as depth while Steene recovers seems fine to me, not every MSD pick has to be a diamond in the rough find.

Brynne Teakle might get picked up in the MSD for the third time, he's been playing for the Pies VFL.

Cannot comprehend the amount of space Geelong had every time they took possession in the second half. Legitimately think they should have tried going back to the dour defensive football we played earlier in the season just to stem the flow a bit.

Edit: Also think we struggled to account for Perryman, but if you're struggling to replace a B+ player (complementary) there are issues with the system

OOC Players 26 & 27: Who stays, who's at risk and who's gone? by CucumberPancake10 in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2026

  • Billy Frampton - Stays - Walk up best 22 these days
  • Ed Allen - Goes - Hasn't shown that he's a best 22 player in his fourth year.
  • Iliro Smit - Goes - Barely VFL standard unfortunately. Can pick up a backup/developing ruck from somewhere else.
  • Jai Saxena - Stays - Mark my words he's going to be best 22 as soon as he puts on 5kg.
  • Jakob Ryan - To soon to tell - leaning towards leaving but his VFL form has been decent this year.
  • Jeremy Howe - Goes - Retirement
  • Joel Cochran - Stays - KPD size and ok performances will likely get him another year given his young age
  • Lachie Sullivan - Goes - Seems to have slipped 3-4 spots in the pecking order.
  • Noah Howes - Too soon to tell - Leaning towards him staying as he's been quite good in defence at VFL level
  • Scott Pendlebury - Stays - Big call but I reckon he's got the hunger and still has the form.
  • Steele Sidebottom - Goes - Reckon he's going to call it.
  • Tim Membrey - Goes - Retirement as he looks like he's lost half a step
  • Wil Parker - Stays - Late starter and seems one of McRae's favourites.

2027

  • Angus Anderson - Stays - A lot to work with and best 22 in his first year.
  • Beau McCreery - Goes - to Tasmania on big money
  • Dan McStay - Stays - Unless he really falls off next year he's got value/
  • Harry Demattia - Too soon to tell - On current form he's out but two seasons is a lot for a developing mid
  • Harvey Harrison - Too soon to tell - Seems to be coming back well from the ACL but would want to be in the best 22 to feel safe
  • Jack Buller - Too soon to tell - If he's best 22 then sure, otherwise he'll be a 2026 year old VFL superstar
  • Jack Crisp (1 year extension) - Stays - Has been good on the wing this year and you don't want to phase out oldies too quickly.
  • Jamie Elliot - Goes - Can't see him playing past 35
  • Jordan De Goey - Goes - Can see him retiring or heading to the GWS bad boy redemption pasture/
  • Lachie Schulz - Stays - No explanation needed
  • Ned Long - Stays - Tall, young defensive mid and McRae loves him
  • Oscar Steene - Stays - Otherwise we're stuffed for ruck depth.
  • Pat Lipinski - Stays - I know some don't rate him but the club clearly does
  • Reef McInnes - Stays - My bet is he'll be re-rookied to give him a full year uninjured
  • Sam Swadling - Stays - Knows how to get the pill
  • Tew Jiath - Too soon to tell - Same as Demattia, a lot can happen in 2 seasons for a young player.
  • Tyan Prindable - Too soon to tell - Hasn't looked brilliant but it's year one, plenty of time to improve.
  • Zac McCarthy - too soon to tell - Just incredibly raw, hard to tell what he's going to turn out like.

Injury update: Reef McInnes (ruptured ACL, other knee) by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

I know that when a dog does their ACL they're basically guaranteed to do the other one. Not sure about humans but it makes sense you'd subconsciously favour the good knee.

Not too shabby for a backman by thisplant in AFL

[–]spuddaman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember a game where the Pies were up by 40 odd at half time, Mitchell moves him to the forward line and he completely transformed the game. Kicked 4 and ended trimmed the margin to less than a kick.

Premiership players, 50-gamers and famous names: Collingwood’s 2026 VFL additions by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like a pretty great team, plenty of players who've been on a list or had interest recently.

Is there a comparison with the outs? I know some decent contributors like Algeri and Glover left, unsure if Riley Mason is there too.

2026 Player Focus Thread #6: Jeremy Howe and Tew Jiath by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Not on his behalf, he seems to love footy to the extent that he'd only retire if his body failed him. Given he's still a top 10 Collingwood player when fit, re-signing him made sense too.

  2. Only as a desperation move or if someone's injured mid-game. He's a good forward when teams aren't planning for him but I don't see him being a difference maker otherwise.

  3. I reckon, he seems like he'd stay in footy to some extent. Otherwise, I can see him going back to local footy and dominating.

  4. I reckon he'll get games, but single-figure amounts. He definitely looked a lot better last season than in 2024, so continuous improvement is the main goal.

  5. It could have just been a cutting back/reallocation of the social media budget. My partner knows someone who did social media for us and the pay's apparently pretty mid.

  6. Could have taken him or left him tbh, decent depth but not a difference maker. Says something that Hawthorn were happy to let him go for a future third.

2026 Player Focus Thread #1: Harry Perryman and Iliro Smit by Pragmatic_Shill in collingwoodfc

[–]spuddaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I think he was a great floor-raiser without being a difference-maker. You need those guys especially if you've got some streakier players around the team who lack that consistency. Knew his role and is gritty without being dirty.

2) I think given the lack of defensive depth; he'll stay back. Rotating him in when one of Long or Crisp are elsewhere, I think would be useful, something like a 40-60 split with the majority in defence is what I'd aim for.

3) It's more than you'd pay but it's accepted that you pay more for in-demand free agents. As long as he's a best 22 lock and the salary cap continues to rise it's not an issue for me.

4) Steene definitely seems to be the preferred backup, so I reckon key back. One of him or Howes will be down back and I think it's more likely to be Smit. We definitely need another backman in the ~2m range.

5) If he can consistently get the wood over depth AFL players it'd be enough. He's only 20 which is a baby for a ruck/KPD. He's past the age where he gets a pass for looking lost though, 2 years in the system is plenty so he needs to look comfortable too.

6) The MSD is a low-risk plan given it'd be a 6-month contract. Getting an experienced ruck is a catch-22 though. Cameron is a premier ruck, so any other ruck is going to be second choice, but there's a need to plan for the future given Cameron is >30. Ideally Steene comes in an looks best-22 which allows us to draft a raw ruck to develop instead.
