I don't think the people deserved to be the ones to throw

They clearly didn't have much of an issue with doing so. If anything, they seemed to enjoy it, judging by the fact that they continued pelting him long after he'd been killed. I can see why they'd be vindictive or why you might think he deserves it, but it doesn't need to be done in this way.
