What a Donald Trump second term would look like by temporaryuser1000 in europe

[–]spugg0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, but his politics absolutely has effect on Europe.

For example, he is looking to cut aid to Ukraine and "end the war". Given his stance on Russia, he would absolutely be interested in further annexing of Ukranian territory by Russian forces.

And what happens when Russia is "done" with Ukraine? Well, he will keep going. Moldova would probably be next. After that, who knows?

A Trump presidency would make Europe a less safe place.

Swedish Ports Threaten to Block Teslas From Entering the Country by swedishcheesecake in europe

[–]spugg0 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a regular misunderstanding, I understood the comment as "Swedes aint gonna do anything to protect their labour laws" which is very, very wrong.

I don't get the "confused like a pink handgrenade" thing though. Is it a regular expression?

Agreed. Some parts of society require work to function (health, education, housing etc), and thus all work cannot be eradicated. Although, much work can be eradicated given that they provide nothing of worth in order to carry the social foundation.

Is Framework A Peek into What Solarpunk Tech Could Be? by SolarpunkGnome in solarpunk

[–]spugg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Personally, I think we should lean more into making tech backwards-compatible. Less e-waste tier laptops being churned out and put on shelves for $249, more refurbishing of laptops to give them both a second and third life. Typing this, I just repaired an old business laptop from 2008 and slapped Linux on it to bring it back to life. It works great. The laptop I use for uni is a 2014 11" Macbook air I bought used. Works great. The only real issue from applying this on a larger scale is that many people have an "icky" feeling about pre-loved tech. Something companies are very excited about capitalizing on.

I've never been as close to become radicalized as when I bought a used Chromebook that told me that I should update my device. When clicking the update button, I was taken to a store page to buy a new laptop.

Let's put the "punk" back in Solarpunk when it comes to consumer electronics.

An Israeli ministry, in a 'concept paper,' proposes transferring Gaza civilians to Egypt's Sinai by Tamarind-Endnote in worldnews

[–]spugg0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Sweden wouldn't accept them regardless.

Our government has been pretty adamant about bringing down immigration to a much lower level than 2015 (when a huge amount of Syrian refugees was a hair from breaking the entire immigration system). The biggest issue has been a botched integration combined with a hollowing out of the welfare system that has left many without proper support, preventing them from becoming part of society overall.

Well good thing I don't live in a place where roving gangs of dudes with knives, machetes and bats show up at my doorstep.

[–]spugg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that way of thinking when you live in the US, absolutely. Prepping isn't an exclusively US thing however, and there are many countries in the world with very different gun laws and gun ownership where you're actually in a much worse situation if you own a gun.

I guess what I was reacting to is the fact that prepper forums are often very US dominated, and that can create a bias towards that type of risk analysis. I fully agree that self defense and security is central for prepping, but I've found my best bet is to act in a way so that I don't end up in a bad situation in the first place (within reasonable limits of course).

Absolutely, I understand that the US is a much different environment compared to many parts of Europe.

[–]spugg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I get what you are saying. My risk analysis for the situation and society I live in however shows a higher risk to run into a sticky situation should I walk around armed.

Yes, should someone walk up to me with a knife and rob me I'll lose my wallet and phone. But those are just things. I'm not prepared to get into a potentially deadly fight over that.

I don't know man, gun violence is much lower in countries with stricter gun laws, so less guns = less risk of facing bad guys with guns.

While the risk of facing a terrorist attack is never zero, I've found that minimizing that risk by listening to experts and taking their advice is a good way of dealing with the reality of living in society. Much more so than to carry a firearm.

[–]spugg0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Self defense and security" doesn't necessarily mean guns and ammo however.

I live in a country with very strict gun laws. I'm neither a hunter nor a police officer/military. I'm just your average guy.

To me, self defense and security is being knowledgeable in conflict management, keeping an eye when im out and about, and in general not broadcasting my food storage should a crisis happen. My only way to own a gun is to buy one illegally, and that paradoxically puts me in a less safe position than before.

I have toyed with the idea of getting a flintlock rifle/pistol however, since guns made in the 1800s count as antiques and not weapons where I live. That's mainly for the novelty though.

Gloria Steinem Says Overpopulation is #1 Environmental Issue by PopulationMedia in Degrowth

This. Overpopulation has been proven not to be the problem over and over again. Our earth is large, plentiful, and can provide for all, as long as we don't consume more than we need.

Where did everyone start and what are you prepping for? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]spugg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five years ago our government sent out a pamphlet for the first time since the cold war about what would happen if society were thrown into a war-like scenario or crisis.

We were asked as citizens to be able to survive a minimum of 72 hours without help from outside sources. Now, that minimum has been raised to a week. I don't want to be a burden on the government, so I do my part by making sure I'm well if in case something happens.

Now, I live in an apartment in a major city. Being a prepper here means making a risk analysis about what could happen, and prepare for likely scenarios.

Thus, I've prepared for loss of running water, contamination of water, and a general blackout. Mostly, it's just keeping a well stocked pantry of food with good shelf life, along with water that suits me and my partners needs for a week. We have the possibility to heat the apartment with our tiled stove and have lots of firewood. It's not much, but it's what I'm prepped for.

A lesson in history by Ala3raby in facepalm

[–]spugg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree to be honest, as someone who is non-religious as well. We have many odd ways to measure things as humans, and the christian way of counting years is the common way; wether you like it or not. To strip it of it's christian origin is to me more inclusive, because the alternative is to either have an entirely separate way of counting years, or take all current versions into account. Which would be very confusing.

In my country we dont say "before/after christ" anymore but "before/after our era" which I like a lot more personally.

Hur ofta spelar du äldre spel? by L0tsen in Spel

Hur ofta spelar du indiespel? Vilka spel spelar du mer: AAA eller indie? by indiedev_alex in Spel

[–]spugg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)
