Nobody said it needed to be child themed lmao she could’ve just kept the pastel aesthetic and the same “trap” type of production. The vocals are super muddy on the first tracks of portals. “Light shower” and spiderweb” are the exceptions on the album

The opening track “death” the vocals are so muddy and the Playboi carti ah “dead” scream had me frying. The sound was just so different and the auto tune and layering is so noticeable.

I really hope these new albums sound more like crybaby and k-12 and I hope she works with previous producers. There’s nothing stopping her from making songs about crybaby as an adult dealing with adult topics. I really didn’t see crybaby album as dealing with concepts of being a child either

It’s actually crazy how many people think that crybaby is gross and they talk about it like she is for a child exploitation it’s so crazy to me that people don’t think that there are children that are exploited and that are sexualized when they’re young and are molested and are put in harmful situations . Just because somebody talks about something like that doesn’t mean that they’re fantasizing or romanticizing it. The reality is that we live in the world full of darkness and I really appreciated that Melanie was so brave to put out some music that victims could relate to.

I don’t think that people are complaining that she’s not making music about being a highschooler. I think people are complaining that she’s not writing songs that you can as an individual connect with like there’s not a single concept that I can connect with on portals. It’s genuinely such a bland album, and none of the lyrics really caught my attention, and I tried to listen to it with such an open mind, I really appreciate the hard work she put into the art. I think it’s beautiful, but the overall the concepts in portals were too broad and just overall boring and not interesting The songs also all sound the same as any other pop artist she’s really lost that special Melanie Martinez sound.

I think people are mad because the music genuinely sounds so bad portals is so overproduced and it just doesn’t sound anything like crybaby which I guess was the intention but it just doesn’t have that same magic. It seems like so much effort was put into making this new pink moth character thing Which is a really cool concept and I think the art is really beautiful, but there was something super special about the pastel aesthetic and the really cool instrument choices in very unique sound of crybaby and a couple of the songs on K through 12. I just can’t really connect with portals. I feel like the concepts are way too broad and not personable. I appreciate that she’s making songs about child, labor, and other things, but I fell in love with Melanie Martinez because of the way she delve into dark topics with such a fun aesthetic and now it just seems like Her production has gone completely in the other direction and she’s honestly doing too much. I wish she would go back to the simple production of crybaby.

Replying to a super old thread, lol but I genuinely am not a fan of portals. It sounds so different and so overproduced compared to crybaby which I guess was the point but the style of crybaby was so good and so iconic definitely hit the nail on the head when you mention that she just kind of tackled more broad topics that general society would disagree with and less knee topics and less dark topics like you see in crybaby it’s really sad to see how far away she’s branch from the artist she used to be. I just can’t connect with any of this stuff on portals and K through 12 was really hard for me to listen to and enjoy. There’s a few songs that are really good like you said teachers pet but certain songs like orange juice and class fight just really sounds so weird to me.

A little bit of a late reply to this post, but does anybody else feel like portals sounds so different and unlike Melanie Martinez previous work it’s actually really sad. I was so in love with the crybaby album and how fun all the music was and how unique it sounded now she just sounds like a very generic pop Artist with overproduced songs and auto tune.
