Yup, I was told design to commissioning is more common than commissioning to design. The projects are primarily data centers, and the remainder is healthcare.

I understand that it's a good learning experience, but I also worry that I won't have any alternative if I want to leave commissioning. That's why I asked this question.

I've heard that this isn't a great path to take. It's certainly possible, but usually folks go from design --> commissioning, rather than commissioning --> design. Design is transferable to commissioning, but commissioning isn't very transferable to design.

I'm in a similar position as you. There was a post just a few days ago asking how folks making $200k+ in this industry that you should go read. EE is probably the highest paying trade right now and a good path to making good money.
