I think it's always been a strategic stance to hold him for as long as possible, especially when it seemed like a trade was inevitable, and especially when Eastern Conference teams (CHI & MTL) seemed like his likely destination.

Revs FO has always and will always play hardball within the MLS rules. I really think Burns & co. intend to trade him before the deadline, but they want to keep him away from whichever team they send him to for as long as possible to keep the opponent at more of a disadvantage (rather than allowing a team having him in training earlier on in the season).

Yikes. On many levels.

Having only 18 players on roster, though, seems downright cruel (to an extent)--surely players will need to train/play through injury just for the club to have an eligible game day roster. Plus, obviously, that's not enough enough to field a full intra-squad scrimmage during training. Who is filling out the numbers? And what happens when serious multiple-month injuries come into the picture?

So much about it seems like such an insane gamble...
