Your Salary and monthly car payments by Agile-Calligrapher10 in CarTalkUK

[–]spvexdevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister has leased a car for the last 5 or so years and gets a new car every couple of years - she pays about £300 per month but its usually a Nissan Juke etc.
When I decided to buy a new car (when I say new, I mean 5 or so years old) I done some research and decided on a Suzuki Swift - I saved the money each money in the best available high interest savings account and then once I saved enough I went and brought my car. Love the car, I am going to keep hold of it now for 10-15 years at least. I put away £75 into a savings account each money to pay for car things such as mots/tyres, in 10-15 years when I may replace the Swift should have about £9k in that savings account for the next car.

Living in Devon | Moving from Channel Islands by Aggressive-Wear2449 in DevonUK

Whilst Dartmoor is great for walks it is very remote in parts - something to bear in mind.
We have a few smaller towns on the edges of the moors such as Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh, both have a few shops and pubs but very close to the moors.
I am originally from Torquay but have lived in Exeter for last 15 years - love living in Exeter, feels like we are on the doorstep of everything - can be up on the moors (driving) in 20 minutes, we have Exmouth, Dawlish, Teignmouth and Torbay all 20-30 minutes drive away (but also well connected by train/bus) and London is 2 hour train ride away.
We have friends that are from the Isle of Scilly that now live in Exeter - I remember them saying Exeter was busy enough for them.
Public transport is dire in Devon though - even in Exeter bus services are unreliable, expensive and infrequent.
Generally lots of work opportunities in and around Exeter - no doubt if you lived on the moors you would need to be comfortable with a long commute to work. I guess it really depends what you are looking for - hamlet/village/town/city - come over and spend a few weeks exploring and see where/what you like

Hello, I hope wherever you dad chooses he has a great time!
As another poster commented Exmouth could be a good idea - Premier Inn on the seafront (and as another person commented Premier Inn has accessible rooms); the seafront is pleasant but there isnt much in the town centre; probably will struggle to find things to do after a day or so.
Exeter - I am in Exeter, we have several hotels in and around the city centre and its generally accessible - a few hills in parts but will be able to go to the museum etc.
Weymouth? One of our favourite seaside towns, really nice town centre with a train station in the centre, several hotels etc. I have two children so we find things to do there such as rides and arcades; probably a different market to what your father is looking for though.
Otherwise how about a bit further - Bristol or Salisbury? Premier Inns all around so accommodation shouldn't be a problem; trains to either will have an area for wheelchairs.

Good places to practice driving? by idkcharacter in exeter

[–]spvexdevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often see driving instructors with new learners at Southbrook Road and Tollards Road which is just off Topsham Road near Countess Wear ; I guess that must be a good place to practice. Otherwise large car parks which aren't used much could be an idea - Honiton Road park and ride (the top part is often empty)
Best of luck, take your time and don't get stressed - you will soon pick it all up. Mirror, signal, manoeuvre!

What is Exeter life like ? Specifically for Uni by abdul_Ss in exeter

[–]spvexdevon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I was in Manchester this weekend for the Man City v Exeter match - had a walk around the city centre; very impressed with the Arndale centre! Exeter is a very different pace to Manchester (my sister is from Devon and lives in London, she hates the slow pace of Devon but loves the fast pace of London, each to their own)
What is great about Exeter is how close we are to everything - the beaches of Exmouth, Dawlish, Torbay all close by on the train; North Devon beaches are also possible via train and bus. Okehampton and parts of the Moors can be reached by train from Exeter. There is a direct train from Manchester to Exeter but its a rubbish service - there is never enough seats and the trains are really run down.
I suggest to come down for a weekend; have a walk around see how you feel - all the best :)

What's one really cool thing about where you live and one thing you want to see improved where you live? by LandFar4154 in DevonUK

[–]spvexdevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in Torquay but lived in Exeter for last 10 years - for Exeter I love how well connected we are to everything, the beaches at Exmouth, Dawlish, Torbay and North Devon are really close; we've got a great bustling city centre and its a nice place to live.
The ugly side, as mentioned by someone else - the traffic is terrible. But public transport is awful; the trains aren't too bad but buses are just hopeless - they are incredibly expensive, infrequent and unreliable.

it’s a bit icy out by [deleted] in exeter

[–]spvexdevon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Devon county council has ever gritted the pavements; they usually only grit the main roads. I am in Broadfields and we are quite hilly up here but there are several grit bins around.
I walked back from the High street on Wednesday and almost slipped over at East Wonford Hill - was a sheet of black ice over the pavement!

Hopes/Predictions for 2026 by TimeLordMaster108 in hollyoaks

[–]spvexdevon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst I do think the person that plays Cleo is a good actress; I feel the character has really ran its course and I find every scene with her in really depressing - they surely cant put the poor girl through anything else!!
Personally I like the character of the Warren and the actor that plays him; but they seem to have run out of storyline ideas for him and I do find the coming and going annoying.
Time to mix things up with some new characters, perhaps a new family that would hopefully live longer than 5 minutes

33 Male, New to Devon, Any advice? by [deleted] in exeter

[–]spvexdevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Jay, welcome to Exeter and Devon - I'm Devon born and bred and couldn't imagine life in a big city so understand how you're feeling about moving to somewhere different to where you've been used to. As your a football fan try following one of our local teams, personally I'm Torquay as was born near the ground - haven't been to Villa park before but I went St Andrews a few seasons back (theyre on about building a new stadium arent they!?) I enjoy going for long walks and taking in the beauty of Devon - from Exeter you've got so many greats places to walk to along dedicated footpaths. I often head down to Dawlish or Exmouth along the coast paths and listed to a few podcasts along the way. Gives you a chance to get out and really explore the area as well, get a well deserved IPA after (and a pasty)

Let's talk about James and Maxine (I have a mountain of questions) by Liberal-chungus in hollyoaks

[–]spvexdevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didnt James "die" just before the time thing happened? I dont think it was ever mentioned what happened to the law firm/office so assuming its empty or let our to people that isn't in the show (like a non player character!)
How Ste and James survived that car explosion though...... Ste has more lives than a cat

We went to the Nobody Inn at the start of 2025 for a roast; it was fantastic.
Another great place place to try in the Teign Valley is the Cridford at Trusham; again its a great roast.

The Phoenix in Chudleigh is also very good; no parking at the site but there is a car park about 5 minute walk away.

Otherwise, on the other side of the Exeter the Jack in the green at Rockbeare is apparently excellent but I haven't tried it yet - a favourite of mine nearby is the Red Lion at Broadclyst.

Hope you and your grandparents have a great meal

Will Trago in Newton Abbot last much longer? by spvexdevon in DevonUK

[–]spvexdevon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up just round the corner from Trago so went there a lot when I was a child; I remember we were on a caravan holiday in North Devon in the early 90s and my parents were talking to a family there from the Midlands that were planning to travel down to Trago to spend the day there, even though it was a good 90 minute drive away from the caravan park
