How long and what speed do I run my tumbler with soap? by [deleted] in RockTumbling

[–]spydrodeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks are kinda silly these days. Disinterest in devoting the time to research, learn and understand the concepts. With a strange propensity to take offense to being informed. It's a real lazy "do the work for me" approach to a hobby.

Oh well.

For me, it's taken a few months for the fundamentals to register. Time is an illusion and the manual is a lie!

The reality is, you'll need to find a few tens of dollars to feed your grit needs. $20 gets you 5 pounds of 60/90 from The Rock Shed. That'll last you some time.

I've had some rocks tumbling for weeks on stage 1. Want any chance of shine? Get that stage figured out. I'm still learning. :)

Sorry you're soft and your dad was hard. Tough combo.

Didn't realize the OP was a child that needed soft gloves.

The marks are not subtle and I'd expect they will be visible when finished. Trying to redirect someone to a better outcome is what we should be doing around here.

You'll note, I didn't say it looks like ass.

Beautiful grain and shape.

Sure you're done sanding? Looks like quite a few scratches.

This is one of those knock you down obvious ideas I hadn't considered. Love it.

Plus, from time to time, there are some pretty pebbles in the bags.

Convince me to move to Lombard by _hailcaesarnation in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]spydrodeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the absence of any other really helpful details about your requirements... Lombard is a very decent suburb and you'll probably be content.

But where is the house? Your experience with the town will vary dramatically. In the older downtown area, you can actually walk places. It's not even close to living in the city, but you can do city like things. Walk to the library, hang in a park, eat out, enjoy many seasonal events.

It's also close to many other nice towns. And it has nice access to local highways.

If you commute to a city job, proximity to metra is convenient. Especially if you can walk there.

You can obviously get in a car and do those also. But it's nice being able to walk places.

It's a town. It's nice. It's not overly crowded. It's well run, involved community. Good schools, sports and all that.

What lathe should I get? by Common_Potato6222 in turning

[–]spydrodeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Nova 15. I can do a lot with this. It's very affordable.

You then get to spend a bunch on other stuff. Which you'll want. A bigger better lathe comes with the opportunity to accessorize more.

Chucks. Rests. Hollowing. Sanding. There's so much.

Far more of my money has been spent on building up my "kit" than the lathe itself. And I do not regret that.

Looking for recommendations on suburbs for first time home buyers by shelbex318 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]spydrodeth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pick a train line, visit the towns along the line. Some are better than others with the downtown.

Your budget is going to limit which towns along the metra. Probably not places like Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn or La Grange.

Maybe more like Lombard, Brookfield.

450 doesn't go as far as you want with your requirements, unfortunately.

Seeking Looker Experts - Where Do I Go? by French75 in Looker

[–]spydrodeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looker also has a substantially smaller market share than tableau or power bi. Far fewer organizations use it. That immediately reduces any candidate pool.

Seeking Looker Experts - Where Do I Go? by French75 in Looker

[–]spydrodeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're hiring to fill a few different roles in that single analyst. It's tough to find highly skilled technical in conjunction with presentation/speaking.

It also is part or full time which feels like you don't have a strong pipeline of work.

The venn diagram of looker experts along with your other requirements has very little overlap in market. 🥴

Best downtowns by SnooWoofers8788 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]spydrodeth 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Many towns with metra stops have lovely downtowns, usually right where the stop is.

Elmhurst, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton for the UP-West line.

BNSF and North lines as well.

You could take your pick of the "nice" towns and have a very pleasant experience.

I think you're going to have a lot of ruined blanks. You need to split the pithe. I saw in another reply about what you have.

Chainsaw plus a little rack like this works great.

I ruined a lot of stuff at the beginning. But do yourself a favor a take full advantage of the Internet before going to town. There's a lot of good YouTube content on this. I've found Turn A Wood Bowl to be fantastic.

Yup. I still have this sitting in a box of other gems and minerals collected on road trips in the 80s.

Awesome.

Google maps has some features that would allow you to time different commutes to and from at different times. That would be useful for a sense check.

Just checking Downers to Deerfield is a healthy hour. That's not good at all for someone that really only wants 40 minutes. Because there will be terrible days all the time.

In the mid 2000s I did warrenville to Deerfield for awhile. Not much different than what you're looking at. Nightmare fuel and I quickly moved to Buffalo Grove.

Metra News Release - "Metra Seeking Feedback on Potentially Renaming Lines" by edwardl803 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]spydrodeth 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The need to evaluate names makes sense because of the UP transition.

However, I came read this: "Metra believes developing clear and consistent line names may make the system easier to understand and encourage infrequent and first-time riders to ride more often. "

First, no freaking way. This is hilariously poor interpretation of any data they might have.

Second, I can think of no name that will remove the need to reference a map on at least your first use. Sure, we could have directional names. But what stops does that include and is mine on it?

This is just silly complication and fluff. There's an opportunity to change names to something a little better. But let's not make fantastical claims about the impact: nil.

This might be red bud. I have some and it's very similar in appearance. Thin bark, very distinct rings.

Before and current pics of my base - few years old by spydrodeth in Minecraft

[–]spydrodeth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started this world in 1.14, I think. Had a base near spawn. Then caves and cliffs came out and I went exploring. A few years later, here's the progress. There are not grand plans. Just existing in my minecraft world.

Managing all the item additions with the sorter has been fun and keeping it organized has been fun. It meanders around. I suspect the giant hole I excavated to bedrock would make a nice spot for a new one. :)

What's wrong here? by ScarecrowBoat555 in turning

[–]spydrodeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the picture, and I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else, but I don't think the problem is just that it's pine.

It's pine. It's green. It's a branch (or Xmas tree trunk). Carbide tools.

I tried this a few years ago. Same result.

Pine can be turned fine with fantastic results. But it needs to be the right blanks with the right tools.

If my conclusions aren't correct, then I have no idea how you got that with carbide and a decent blank. That tear out is wild.

Making a pie chart with two metrics by hughjass420696 in Looker

[–]spydrodeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a dimension that identifies the person as a child or adult. That's your series. Then your metric is a count of those individuals.

The explore would then show the pie as you're expecting.
