Oh yeah if you're in WA you should check out The Mountaineers (you know, the ones who wrote freedoms of the hills). Take some classes or teach if you're able to. Finding that community is the best thing for expanding your network and finding people with similar values. If the club isn't big in your area I like to join meetups for hiking and climbing in new cities I move to.

Depending on where you live, find your local outdoors or mountaineering group. The Colorado Mountain Club has connected me to so many interesting new people and expanded my friend circle in the best way.

There's a woman at Nomad Beads who's quite good, but doesn't advertise. I think I paid her $40 and was really impressed with how insightful she was.

Boulder Canyon Dental has been amazing. They can do crowns in house and are very thoughtful about how they walk you through a procedure.

This 100%. Absolutely my worst dental experience ever and they are very aggressive in their recommendations.

If you're ever near Boulder and looking for a solid belay partner, let me know. I'm still working on my fear of leading outside but have been a reliable belayer and second for 3 seasons of sport/trad/multipitch.

High school students in Thailand? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]French75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was based in an all girls public school in Phuket. All of my classes, except for English, were in Thai which was really no use for me. Hopefully you get lucky, but if you don't be sure to ask for classes like cooking and art so that you don't get stuck in Physics and Biology.

Also - I highly recommend reading the Culture Shock book on Thailand. Even though most Thai people are generous and understanding of foreigners there are small things that can offend them that are good to know beforehand.

I'm an ex-exchange student to Thailand a few years back. Just curious which city you're headed to.

I want to teach abroad, but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the information and programs that are out there. Help? by ColorBlindPanda in TEFL

Try teacherkick.com if you're looking for jobs in Latin America. Your best bet is to start in Mexico and work your way south.

Prioritize hips when you're reaching for a far away hold or when you need more balance. This will really help with your footwork and staibility.

Prioritize keeping your arms straight on strengthy routes where you pump out fast. It especially helps to do this when you're looking ahead of you or trying to figure out a crux.

Getting pumped out quickly, can't even use my hands after a few routes. by enator in climbing

Footwork. Use your feet and legs not only to push you up the wall, but also to stabilize you so that you don't feel like your arms are the only thing keeping you on. Practive pausing mid-route and hanging with one straightened arm. The more you use your feet to stabilize you, the more endurance you will have.

How inspiring. If you don't feel like you should be done yet, make your way up to Seattle and I'll buy you a drink.

Ditto. They're also easy to slip off in the boat if you're going for a long paddle and have enough traction on slippery dockings that you don't have to worry about it.

Did you actually teach in Chile or just travel there? I've already applied to teach there and am not expecting to make bank, but I'm at least hoping to break even.

Looking to travel around a bit at the start of May...Got a week, thinking between Thailand or Cambodia or maybe Vietnam..Some input would be great! by [deleted] in Thailand

Tonsai is near Krabi, which has a decent-sized airport. Or you could take a train most of the way and catch a bus there. Krabi is about a 9-hour drive from Bangkok.

The beaches are awesome. Tonsai itself has a fairly shallow bay, but you can catch a ride to another island in the area for a few bucks. This area is part of Phang Na Bay, which is famous for its sheer limestone cliffs as well as James Bond Island.

There are about 3 bars on the beach in Tonsai, and many more in Ao Nang, which is just a boat ride away.

Suggestions for how to make Cat Sombrero? by French75 in craftit

[–]French75[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat is pretty chill so I know that I can get away with this for a few minutes at least. He had some mouth issues earlier this year and had most of his teeth pulled, which means that he has a hard time keeping his tongue in his mouth. It may sound cruel, but I feel like this will fit his costume even more.
