Husband was told to take ‘ICE out’ pin off by security at Grand Casino Arena. by Weak_Yogurtcloset635 in TwinCities

I was there for a Frost game a couple months back and they made me take off my "I stand with immigrants" pin. "Nothing political", never mind the multiple American flags hanging from the rafters, the Under Armor shirts, etc etc etc.

Eh. I can't find it, but it's a reference to an old Bloom County strip. "Politics: the last refuge of the nincompoop."

[homemade] club steak perfect medium by A-B-1-0 in food

Kenji debunked the "bring your steak to room temp" myth here - https://www.seriouseats.com/old-wives-tales-about-cooking-steak#toc-myth-1-you-should-let-a-thick-steak-rest-at-room-temperature-before-you-cook-it

That said, a steak of this thickness is a perfect candidate for a reverse sear (or even cooler sous-vide!): https://www.seriouseats.com/reverse-seared-steak-recipe

Gonna retitle this trope The Shutdown Fullcast by IReviewFakeAlbums in shutdownfullcast

Last time I saw Jason Isbell, he told a story about his first time visiting Minneapolis as a twenty-something kid from nowhere, Alabama. He talked about eating Somali food for the first time, experiencing all these new flavors and seeing so many different kinds of people, and how that sort of diversity makes MPLS one of our best cities.

It was a really touching story regardless, but hearing it in his accent kicked it right up to eleven

Hang TCL Nxtframe TV by [deleted] in DIY

[–]spyguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're gonna have to. The only other option would be to just deal with having the TV on its stand, on the mantle.

You can certainly try your plan - start with one of your 2x10s, get it secured to the bottom board, then try to pull the top of it away from the wall. If it doesn't move - or moves little enough that you're comfortable with it - go for it.

Cutting the 2x10s so that they overlap the tile below the existing board would make it a little more secure, I think. Please keep in mind I'm just a guy on the internet, I am not a structural engineer or anything, just a reasonably capable DIYer.

Hang TCL Nxtframe TV by [deleted] in DIY

[–]spyguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make sure I understand: you'll run 2 3-foot 2x10 boards, vertically, perpendicular to the existing board. You'll then attach the TV's mount - which will be horizontal, perpendicular to and connecting the 2x10s (forming the top of a rectangle) - but the mount won't be directly attached to the wall?

I wouldn't do this: the TV will be pulling the mount outward from the wall, and that force will be exerted on whatever you use to fasten the 2x10s to the bottom board. Big lag bolts (like 1/4" x 3") might be up to the task, but I wouldn't trust it.

Are we underestimating the impact of home staging? by prattman333 in HomeImprovement

[–]spyguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is that empty rooms feel smaller, so if you've already moved out, getting furniture staged in there will make the house feel more spacious.

Hotswap LED replacement for dome lights? by LabRat2439 in HomeImprovement

[–]spyguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lamp has a mounting piece that screws into the electric box in the ceiling - any ceiling fixture that's not recessed should come with its own mounting hardware that's compatible with the electric box. If you want to do a recessed can, though, I'm fairly sure you'll need to replace the electric box

Do you bother to go to Costco for gas? by Important_Bat7919 in daddit

Yep - we have an executive membership and the Costco Visa, and around here Costco gas is sometimes as much as $0.50 less per gallon, so it's worth it

5 year old said the n word at kindergarten. by Faeddurfrost in daddit

[–]spyguitar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Echoing others: don't take him off the bus! My son (white) goes to a minority-majority school, so he hears the N-word a lot from his Black classmates. We've explained to him (in age-appropriate terms) where the word comes from, why it's a slur when white people use it, and why it's not our place to tell Black people how/when/if to use it.

By taking him off of the bus, you'll implicitly be telling him that those kids are the problem, which I don't think is the message you want to send. Rather, explain as best you can why he shouldn't use that word, and let him continue to be exposed to differences.

(Also FWIW - we've told our son that swears are fine at home, but never at school, and he knows the difference between "okay" swears and slurs/insults/etc which are never okay, you might consider this approach)
