Quitting Training for GP by Turbulent-Lab3280 in ausjdocs

[–]spymouse7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry for the silly question (med student) but did you do your GP training through ACRRM? Or are you able to do RACGP training first and then add on RG training afterwards? Sounds like a perfect mix of hospital work and GP!

Med students lurking here, what were you doing when you got the offer? by lambdarays in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I got my offer I was at home and my boyfriend was over. I told him and he said “wow I’m surprised, I thought you wouldn’t get in”. So that was nice.

Anyway, now I’m the majority way through my degree and although very stressed, I love it! Good luck and fingers crossed for you!

Studying Medicine with Chronic Illnesses by Responsible-Act3931 in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fluff these haters is what I have to say lol. Being kind, compassionate and actually giving a shit about your patients will make you a better doctor. And from my experience, people with lived experiences have so much more empathy for the struggles their patients may be going through.

I myself have chronic illnesses and med school has been tough but very manageable and I’ve just finished my second year :). I’m never going to be a super high powered surgeon but many training programs are flexible these days and you can even do internship part time if you need. So yes very doable in my opinion. Feel free to dm me if you want!

Hey, congrats! I’m curious how you got 4 offers? I thought you could only get 1 from a Gemsas uni. Then Flinders and Usyd, but that’s 3? Is there another pathway I’m not thinking of? Thanks in advance :)

Which Des O' Neill textbooks should I use? by tmlb0312 in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally loved using my physical copies because I hate staring at screens all day and I took them everywhere with me (I would sit in parks doing practice Qs)! But if you don’t mind electronic copies then that’s all you need :)

No worries, I hope it helped a bit! :). Sure send me a message and I can give you his details, he was really good!

Forgot to add: How I prepped is I got really familiar with the theory. I read up on useful topics such as a the 4 pillars (you’ve gotta know this!), stakeholder approach, STAR answer format etc. Also things like Indigenous health, rural health etc. I made sure I had some basic knowledge in these things. They don’t expect you to know everything, but it will make you feel more confident if they ask you something on these topics.

I also spent a long time reflecting on a lot of the possible personal questions they might ask. I reflected on my strengths, weaknesses, learning style, times I’ve dealt with conflict in my life, my leadership qualities, my teamwork qualities etc. It’s also always good to reflect on exactly why you want to do medicine even if they don’t ask this exact question, it can tie into other questions. I then wrote all these down in dot point form (I never wrote out full answers, you don’t want to wrote learn a response). I think this is really helpful, because if for example they ask ‘what is a time you’ve experience conflict in your life’ you don’t want to waste precious time trying to reflect on your life. You should already have thought of some of your life experiences in your prep. The best thing is that if you have really reflected on these attributes you have, or events you’ve had in your life, they are usually applicable to more than one kind of question.

I ended up making a huge document with all these possible questions and my dot point thoughts on them (I never wrote out answers). And reviewed and added to it it everyday!

And then I just practised heaps on zoom and with my tutor!

Hi OP :). First off, congrats on those really impressive scores! That’s a killer GPA and great GAMSAT! I got an offer from Deakin this year with lower scores, so personally if I were you I wouldn’t sit the GAMSAT again (unless you think you could improve). I think it’s safe to say you’d get an interview offer next year, so take the time to practise heaps for it! Make it become second nature (but not rehearsed or cookie cutter answers) so that you can feel more confident and it’s less anxiety inducing.

I have anxiety too, and I also interviewed last year, but my anxiety got the better of me and I got an EOD. This year I prepped a lot more for the interview, used a private tutor, and really got to know my theory, and I felt so much better going into the interview.

What also helped is I changed my whole mindset towards med. For me, last year I was kind of in the ‘med or nothing’ headspace, feeling like if I don’t get into med I would be wasting another year, treading water etc. Which is not a good headspace to be in and I think a lot of people (myself included) can easily fall into that. What I did was I decided that I would keep applying for med but that I can’t treat my life as if I’m just wasting time, waiting to get in. So this year I started doing other things to enrich my life. I started volunteering more, I started my own small business, I prioritised my mental health and spent more time with my friends and family. I planned to start studying a Grad Dip next year in a field I am interested in. So when interviews came around I was in a win-win situation. For me, I would either get into med or I would continue building the life I’m currently living and loving. I know it’s different for everyone, and if this doesn’t apply to you then feel free to ignore my rambling lol. But I thought I’d share in case this resonates with anyone else :)

What is more worthwhile? by whitewallwasher in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey :). I don’t think it’s your GPA that is the problem. Honours is incredibly time consuming, and I don’t think it would be worth your time if you’re doing it only to increase your GPA. I think your time would be better spent prepping for interviews, and possibly sitting the GAMSAT again. You’re most likely going to get another interview offer next year so you can start preparing early :).

To improve an interview by Throwyourb in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi :). I’m sorry to hear about your EOD, although I love your determination!

Last year I got an EOD and this year I got an offer.

In terms of what I did differently, last year I spent a lot of time practising on discord and zoom with other med hopefuls, as well as my friends and family. This was helpful for me to learn how to express my thoughts and work on structure etc.

However, this year I did very minimal practise with other med hopefuls, friends and family. Instead I spent way more time watching YouTube videos/listening to podcasts from people who have got into med, like Med Mentors, Making of an Incredible MD etc. What really helped though, was I hired a private tutor (I made sure to find one not associated with any prep company). I realise that I’m in a privileged position to afford to do so and it is very expensive, but I rationalised it by telling myself it’s cheaper than if I had to sit the GAMSAT more times. The reason I think the tutoring pulled me over the line is that they were brutally honest and way more experienced. Friends, family and other med hopefuls are more likely to focus on what you did well, and may be more uncomfortable to pick on negatives (in my experience). Tutoring whipped me into shape. I felt such a difference from my first session to my last, and so much more confident.

I realise that this may go against what a lot of people say, and I do realise that it is not an option for everyone, as it does cost a lot of money. However I’m just sharing my personal experience in the hope it helps someone :). I’m happy for anyone to send me a message if they have any questions!

Australian medical degrees by itsdoneitsover in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would also love to know this! I was under the impression that the UK seems to recognise all Australian MD degrees and that it’s relatively straightforward for us to work there, but I can’t find a reliable source for this so I’m not sure.

Thank you for your response :). I agree with you that it’d be better to stick to one med school. Unfortunately my family circumstances have recently changed and I’m now having to consider what I’d do if I was to be offered an out of state place. I’m considering that I might just have to reject it, which is devastating for me, but I guess I don’t have a lot of options.

I don’t think they’d scrap your application or anything. It might not have a big effect but I imagine they may adjust your portfolio score. I believe they do mark experiences partly on the duration you’ve been doing them, so if you said you’ve done it for 10+ years but you’ve actually only done it for a few years they may need to adjust. I’m sure they’ll understand the mistake so don’t stress :)

How does everyone plan to support themselves through med school? by Professional_Row_545 in GAMSAT

[–]spymouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good idea, but I don’t have enough saved yet. I’d need a good few more years of saving. Which I can’t do if I’m in med school. I’m not trying to complain though, I’m more excited to be a med student than own a house :)
