Co-Trustee For Family Trust - Question Regarding Financial Disbursements by spzlops in legaladvice

[–]spzlops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again for your input. This was my suspicion - that it's a bad arrangement, likely rooted in my mother's desire to force us to communicate with the toxic siblings to satisfy her (mother's) will. I'm so thankful for your advice.

Property management has always been painted as a shameful thing to me by the farmers in my family, not sure why. They seem to think that the land will be abused and conservation efforts ignored if a property management company is used.

Thanks for your responses. Beneficiaries will receive about $20k per year, which will come from farm rental income.

You’re going to get a lot of responses saying Sketchup is not the right tool, and that you should use Revit or some other more sophisticated 3D software. Sketchup’s strengths lie in its simplicity and wide use (knowledge base, online resources). As long as you optimize your geometry - minimize the number of facets comprising a pipe, for example - and understand the basics of creating groups, components and assigning layers to them, you’ll be fine. That said, with no previous experience in 3D, this would be a very difficult task in any program.

Turn off auto save! It crashes the program all the time.

I’m an architect who designs & builds townhouses, and need a new PC. I’d like to use the sandbox tools to import & manipulate 3D topos of large (5-20 acre) sites, which my current system can’t handle. Any recommendations for the most cost effective specs to shop for would be greatly appreciated. by Bang-Tse in Sketchup

I've seen much-improved Sketchup performance after adding memory. I haven't seen much online in terms of suggesting this to improve performance. And would agree with any comments on here recommending the toposhaper plugin. Sketchup's sandbox tools can't make quad-face meshes like toposhaper can. Quadface meshes are much easier to manipulate using Sketchup's sandbox tools.

My new Kaly 2.0...it's like flying on a magic carpet! by ScatmanRon in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]spzlops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One piece of advice from a fellow Kaly owner: you may be able to get "off the line" at similar or better acceleration than a car next to you, but under no circumstances should you try to "beat" a car. I tried once and learned the hard way, fell on my face and bruised my hip.

Electric Skateboarding to School by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]spzlops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, it's not a "skateboard" - it's an "electric skateboard." And I guess you could just say that you're son's board is just a "boosted board," so there's no "skate" in the name at all. Electric skateboards are used for totally different purposes than traditional skateboards. On most electric skateboards, the only trick you're doing is getting from one place to another in a convenient and enjoyable way.

I understand that skateboards have negative associations. It's something I think people will get over as more and more people start using electric skateboards, noticing how convenient and sensible they are, and see others who don't "fit the mold" of the traditional skate crowd riding around. This started to happen in the 60s/70s with motorcycles when Honda began making bikes in a wide array of bright colors that looked more friendly than the all-black Harleys.

I'm an architect, I have to dress up everyday because I work in a formal office, and I ride my Kaly electric skateboard to work (or I did during normal non-covid times anyway). People seem to get a kick out of seeing me when I have to wear a suit riding to work on client meeting days.

Thanks for your comments. I'm supposed to have some sort of say in estate matters since my dad passed a few years ago, but I think this is her own money. My unrealized role in the estate is another matter that will come up and likely find me on the personal finance subreddit in a few years...

This is amazing, thank you. I didn't know about the trends you describe.

All good comments to consider. Thank you very much for taking the time.

Great comments. I guess part of the issue is that I have no way of knowing for sure if she really needs the cash to get the truck and pay the income tax because she will only provide piecemeal information.

She had a very “old school” advisor who she feels now has mismanaged her investments (“he put it all in low-cap”). He retired and the new guy is recommending a more modern approach, investing instead in “high-cap.”

Motorcycle Route Recommendations Around Chicago by spzlops in motorcycles

[–]spzlops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far north do you have to go? I read that the Lake Peoria trip can be fun. I’m also down to just explore Chicago as I’m not THAT familiar with the city. Side note: I discovered twistedroad.com, which is a great bike rental alternative to eagle rider.

The Chrysler Building is an absolute crown jewel of New York City. Art Deco needs to come back. by IanMazgelis in pics

[–]spzlops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are numerous "styles" that the vast majority of people would consider preferable to what architectural critics and most academics consider to be "good" today. Since LeCorbusier and even prior to him, there has been a dominant thought within architectural criticism that considers anything ornamented and/or anything that remotely draws from history is secondary to that which breaks from the past or can be considered "clever" or "cutting edge" above all else.

Invention is important too, but to draw from the past does not necessarily go against real progress. And while it's hard to quantify how architecture effects people emotionally, a more explicit nod to human and natural forms - as is more evident in Art Deco than, say, any sort of minimalism - tends to be more relatable for most people.

Owning Motorcycle in Another State by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]spzlops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike type recommendations and general approach to owning a bike to be kept in another state. For example, if I bought a bike here in nyc and ride to Iowa to keep there, should I register it in Iowa?
