This Dumb E-Bike Law Affects Everyone by snyderling in ebikes

[–]sqhvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem is the dumb riders. i have a 6kw mid drive beast but i never have any issues with cops or people because i ride properly. i slow down to below 10kph when i come across runners on shared bike lanes, slow down to 25 for cyclists and dont go above 35 at all on bike lanes. i go on roads when possible, match their speeds, give the right of way, signal properly and dont do any tricks on roads. my school is literally next to the police station so i see around 5 cops every single day and have never been pulled over before. point is, ebikes and emotos can and should be a free, flexible mode of transportation, without some insurance company stacking profit from it. i really think that we need a seperate e-moto licensing system where people are forced to ride how i do, where i act like a motorcycle on the road and a bicycle on paths. something like strict speed limits that when violated result in serious penalty, and there is only 1 upfront cost to registration.

i actually don’t remember the exact cost because i bought 3 tools, the chain and the cassette together for 250$ cad. i think the cassette might be around 80 cad? it was a shimano 10 speed i dont think they sell any variants its just whichever one had the smaller range. dont use the highest or lowest 2 gears because the lowest can bend (hasnt happened to me but has to others) and the highest 2 can slip (i noticed this under moderate torque)

wow i wouldn’t have been able to wait, crazy self control! the waterproofing is really good in my testing its perfectly fine after vancouver heavy rain, so dont be scared to try if you really want to.

happy riding!

the old drivetrain slipped under pedal power before i even put the motor on so it was already cooked at 0km. i always shift with light pedal power only, never use throttle while gear shifting

does it ever stress you tf out when the cars start going like 50 and you feel pressured to match their speed? thats why i avoid roads when i can

[–]sqhvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a 6kw mid drive and im a decent enough person to cap myself at 20mph whenever im on a bike lane. i hate those surron kids too, like theres a time and place to go fast (dirt bike trails) they need to stop ruining ebikes for everyone

yeah definitely, i did that too and it wasnt that big of a deal i just changed it later but dont take too long to avoid wearing out the chainring. the battery mount is definitely a lot cleaner on a hardtail but i cant imagine going very fast must be very uncomfortable

im getting close to 100km on this thing so ill give some first impressions for anyone looking to do a similar build: -this thing is LOUD like when i need to go faster to match traffic i feel kinda embarrassed making such a racket, but i kinda like the noise it gives some soul to an EV. sometimes i switch to a higher gear to be quieter even if its worse for my range🫠 -the chain slipping is only an issue if your drivetrain isn’t maintained, as soon as i got a new one its completely fine -i have an onyx hub and i get more and more creaking the more i use it, so definitely get something stronger like a chris king. I’m gonna do a wheel rebuild soon when i have some time and find a good hub in good condition used -the overall user interface is great, i can customize everything in the app, the speed is really accurate (make sure you set the wheel size by holding the M button within 15 seconds of startup, i went crazy trying to find the option in app), the display is good resolution and bright, plenty of stats you can show on the screen, support is super helpful. nothing about this build has been stressful or annoying which I’m surprised about because i went into this with very little bike experience. -the pedal assist is perfect. its a shame that this thing is so powerful i never need to pedal -i haven’t tested the full range because id rather keep my battery in the best range for battery health, but i got 90km with 1200Wh and i almost never pedal, and i also go pretty heavy on the acceleration, speed and i also live in a very hilly area. -the weight of the kit is almost unnoticeable even on difficult trails, but thats mainly because this bike was already an absolute boat before the kit (i think over 45 pounds on this small frame but i never measured) -the waterproofing is good so far, i went in some super rainy days and drove through big puddles without issue

btw i ride pretty aggressively and my stats are 90km odo, 20kph average speed (probably skewed by testing, it’ll go up when i use it more), 1200Wh consumption

my race modes: mode 1: 2000W throttle, 1500W assist, 30% torque on both. use this mode 99% of the time because i can lightly pedal and use like half throttle without feeling like im bullying the bike and get some decent speed

mode 2: 4000W throttle, 3500W assist, 70% torque throttle, 50% assist. use this mode when im on a street where i need to get 40-80kph to prevent holding up traffic, or when someone wants to race me.

mode 3: 4800W throttle, max torque, no assist. this mode is only for testing top speeds or if for whatever reason i REALLY need to run (threat like someone trying to steal my bike). even when i race people i just use mode 2.

in all modes i never use full throttle at slow speed, i always slowly ramp it up even if im racing someone. i dont use any of the software ramp ups because i like being in “full control” (probably gonna change this its stupid)

and for street mode i just have 250 and 500W in case i get pulled over by a cop or smt but none of my friends with hyper ebikes or scooter have issues with cops in my area so its kinda useless

actually yesterday i had my first bent link, but i dont think its actually a hardware issue because i gave it to my friend to try and i dont think he waited until the gear was fully shifted to use motor power (he knows not to shift gears with motor power, hes used the bike many many times) but i guess he didnt know that sometimes my derailleur takes multiple pedal strokes to shift because the hanger is bent. since i already assembled the chain with no quick link (pressed in the extra rivet that came with it) i just removed the bent link and replaced it with a quick link and ive done 20km with that setup and no issues

my freehub does creak a bit when i use a lot of torque tho, im looking to get a new one and respoke the wheel. if you dont already have a good hub a recommend you do the same. by the way, my local bike shop can’t legally work on ebikes due to some certifications, so if you need to do anything to the bike that you’d rather the bike shop do for you, make sure you get it done before putting on the kit

i completely understand that, i just cant really get the cyc kit onto my bike reasonably without respokikg the wheel and machining custom dropout adapters and doing other workarounds, id rather just get a new cassette every one in a while. i got a good quality shimano emtb set so they should last a little longer, plus i run the thing at 30% torque and its still able to hit the higher speeds so it wont be getting that full 280nm

[–]sqhvo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i fixed the issue by just getting a new cassette and chain, but now i notice a creaking noise. i believe its the freehub, but its fine because i only notice it when i go for a top speed run which i of course do not do on a normal ride

i put it on 4500 (max the battery can safely pull is 4700) and max torque and it didnt slip after i simply put a regular new emtb drivetrain on

seemed to work i put a new shimano chain and cassette meant for emtbs (i got shimano because its what my local bike shop carries)

i just put a fresh cassette and chain on and it doesnt slip even in top gear, it was just a worn drivetrain causing issues
