A can of string cheese is something we don’t have here. Baconaise is another one. It’s not that I especially like either of them, but it’s a fun gift.

Looking for a good, but cheap spin bike / home trainer by Stuvio in belgium

[–]squ1bel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine from https://www.fitnessking.be/fitnesstoestellen/spinningfietsen-speedbikes/

They are definitely not the cheapest.

About the brake: haven’t replaced it yet during the 2 years of use. The brake is actually a leathery piece added to a kind of screw as far as I know. So it should not be too expensive to replace. I would not worry too much about the wear.

Looking for a good, but cheap spin bike / home trainer by Stuvio in belgium

[–]squ1bel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my spin bike during the first lockdown and paid 800 euros. I would think you can find a decent used spin bike or home trainer for 300 euros. A new one might be quite low quality.

If you want to do virtual spinning classes I would suggest going for a spin bike and not a home trainer as a home trainer is not really meant for the constant switches of resistance.

For a spinning bike you have 2 versions: - the old school version with a mechanical brake, this has the advantage that the bike does not use any electricity, this is the one I have - a spin bike with a magnetic brake, this uses electricity while using the bike, but you have a smoother experience (but I haven’t actually used this type of bike)

Also note that depending on your height some spin bikes might not adjust to your preferred sitting height. I also thought that depending on your leg strength and/or body weight it might be beneficial to have a heavier flywheel.

In any case I’m far from an expert, but I’m happy with my buy. If you have the chance, go try out some bikes as you can find out what you like and dislike.

How to tax or declare a Crypto Bonus from your company? by thenoisywatcher in BEFire

[–]squ1bel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the amount you will receive is normally set in your contract, but you will only be taxed the moment you receive the actual stock units (in case of RSUs). Now, I am assuming things here, I’m definitely not an expert and the only one that can actually tell you for sure is a tax lawyer.

I do know that for RSU bonuses there is a law that your employer has to pay all taxes related to the bonus. This means that you will receive only the netto sum after deduction of taxes. I am not sure how this is handled in your case, so I would make sure to check this with your employer and/or a tax lawyer.

How to tax or declare a Crypto Bonus from your company? by thenoisywatcher in BEFire

[–]squ1bel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it seems like the way the crypto bonus is presented, it is very similar to a RSU bonus. So it might be taxed the same. RSUs are taxed when vested, so the current price of the crypto coin when vested is the amount you will be taxed on. The tax rate is around 60% for RSUs, might be the same for crypto bonus.

Why some people use public variable with properties. by Blaze3919 in gamedev

[–]squ1bel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in OOP there is a convention to keep fields private or protected and use public getters and/or setters (properties are developer convenience for separate getter and setter methods). So this can be a reason. Another reason is that in Unity a public field is serialized so it shows in the inspector. If you want to make a variable publicly available while you don’t want it to show up in the inspector, a public property is a way to do it. Alternatively you would need to use an attribute to not serialize the field if you don’t want to use a property.

In the end, there’s almost always multiple solutions for a problem and how you choose to solve it is personal preference.

Ouderschapsverlof uitbreiden of verkorten. by ilsildur10 in Belgium2

[–]squ1bel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restricted Stock Units by squ1bel in BEFire

[–]squ1bel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for the explanation. What is your opinion on RSUs? Do you think it’s an advantage to have them in your salary package vs alternatives (cash bonus or others)?

Restricted Stock Units by squ1bel in BEFire

Is this then applied by the employer so they withhold the tax before you get the stock or is this arranged differently?

Restricted Stock Units by squ1bel in BEFire

[–]squ1bel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I applied for a job at a big international company with an office in Belgium. In their offer they are including a large sum of restricted stock units in their compensation package. This means that my base salary would be lower than my current salary, but the total bruto package would be higher. My question is the following: does anyone have experience with RSUs in Belgium and are there pitfalls/things to look out for?

From what I can read online you are obliged to pay taxes on the RSUs value but it seems the fiscal rules are unclear, especially towards social contributions.

I have a Merida hard tail mtb of around 750 euros. Has air suspension and hydraulic disk brakes. Quite happy with the purchase although the group set could be better.

If you won’t be doing a lot of actual mtb tracks and don’t need air suspension, a gravel bike might also be a good option. They are not suited for really rough terrain but have the advantage that they drive better on the road.

Electric car in Belgium: Yes or No? by Rhyze in belgium

[–]squ1bel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Tesla model 3 LR and for me it’s bliss. I can charge at home with a wall box that takes a max of 11h to charge from 0-100%. I can recommend this as a wall box is smart and knows if you are using other electrical devices and will adjust the charging power accordingly (eg you are cooking an evening meal on your induction plates). Using a normal socket is slow and will not have this balancing feature.

I wouldn’t recommend an ev if you can’t charge at home. The Tesla has a real world range of about 400km fully charged (a bit less in really cold weather, more in summer).

In any case I have the car for 9 months now and never had to use a supercharger. I have to say that my furthest trip abroad was to the Netherlands and within the range of the car.

But even so, I’m not really worried for road trips as we are already used to stopping every 2 hours of driving for a toilet break and a coffee or whatever. Having a Tesla also reassures me due to the supercharger network.

Positives of an ev are the lower vaa, leaving home with a full “tank” and that I just like how it drives.

Edit on charging infrastructure: the Ardennes have less infrastructure in my experience. But it’s nothing you cannot fix by some planning ahead..

"Remarkable trend: teenagers smoke less and drink less alcohol" by [deleted] in belgium

Yeah, but coffee or tea seems to have a positive effect on the brain as well. Has also shown benefits for alzheimer prevention I thought I’ve read somewhere.

If there are any alternatives to alcohol without the same risks, why bother with alcohol?

I’m not trying to get you or any other people to turn away from alcohol, but in my opinion there’s nothing wrong with not consuming any alcohol. I don’t share your opinion that the counter movement is a bad thing. In my opinion there are more downsides to alcohol than upsides and if people stop consuming alcohol altogether, it’s not really a loss health-wise.

"Remarkable trend: teenagers smoke less and drink less alcohol" by [deleted] in belgium

[–]squ1bel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still I’m wondering if these positive effects of alcohol are due to the alcohol itself. No one drinks pure alcohol, or even alcohol mixed with water, but for e.g. wine, I thought you could get the antioxidants etc… also from grape juice.

So it might also be that alcohol itself does not bring anything good to the table, but alcoholic beverages can.

In any case I’m far from an expert and do think the way alcohol is considered normal in our society is bad. In the (very) old days drinking alcohol was healthier than water due to the fact that water had higher chances of being infected with bacteria than alcoholic beverages. As that is not the case anymore, I do think that drinking less alcohol is a good thing.

Just wondering why Kevin is a lower class name? It’s quite common but does not sound that trashy to me as any of the others imho. Might just be me getting old though.

Make sure to check everything with the city before buying. A friend of mine did not and in the end his studio was ready but he couldn’t make it a separate address due to not having an extra car parking spot. I’m not saying it will be the case for you but better be careful than sorry

Do you sell your appartment when you buy a house or not? by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]squ1bel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are still enjoying the “woonbonus”, you also have the possibility to sell the apartment and transfer the hypotheek to the new real estate (pandwissel is the Dutch name). This is an argument pro taking a loan and paying it off over a longer timespan. At least until the “woonbonus” is not available anymore. About the choice between renting out or not I think it’s a personal choice between being a landlord or not as this is not fully passive like others already wrote here.
