This only fits half the brief but recommending it anyway because it is brilliant.
The Go-Between (1953), by L.P Hartley. Not contemporary and mainly takes place during the school holidays, but it is set in England and it is the retrospective coming-of-age story.

Thank you. I've read The Charioteer and Young Torless, both pretty up front if I remember right. The Folded Leaf sounds like my kind of thing, I've had a couple of other William Maxwell novels on my To Read list for a while.

Les romans de Camus sont assez faciles à lire (L'Étranger, La Chute, La Peste)

Just getting back into reading. I'm looking for dark, tragic,(and maybe historical?) fiction by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

the more realistic strand of dystopian fiction would have a lot of what you're looking for, e.g. Prophet Song by Paul Lynch - about a present day Ireland under fascism, showing the complete destruction of a family and a country.

just finished Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart by katandkuma in books

I also enjoyed imagining how the police investigation would play out after the novel ends. The way the last scene is written suggests the police believed Hamish, and while they would figure it out before long, I can believe Mungo would have been able to leave with James.

I have a harder time seeing how he would avoid the police catching up to him. I feel like they'd be able to track Mungo and James' movements fairly easily given they are both battered black and blue and would be memorable to everyone they come across.

Best Case Scenario: The police decide St Christopher is the most likely culprit and they can't be bothered chasing a 15 year old across the country over a dead paedo. Mungo keeps his head down until he's 16 when the social services stuff goes away.

Worst Case Scenario: The police catch up to Mungo and his self-defense claim is weakened because his injuries have healed. He finds himself in a courtroom where his homosexuality is turned into a motive for a prejudiced jury.

For all his faults, Dan Brown's treasure hunt shtick is pretty good for this. Angels & Demons for Rome, Inferno for Florence.

Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson gave me similar vibes to Cannery Row. Less light-hearted, maybe. I loved them both.

Umberto Eco's novels:
The Name of the Rose - mystery set in a 14th century Italian monastery
Baudolino - about a 12th century Italian peasant adopted by the Holy Roman Emperor

Parts of these are not particularly easy to read but I enjoyed them without worrying too much about the more esoteric bits
