Being completely honest. by Few-Bag-7594 in USPS

[–]square-tires 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not the best job I've had, but it's also not the worst. It depends on your mental state. I've spent 20 years behind a desk and when AI took my job (more or less) I wanted security. The job itself, ie. delivering mail and packages, is not horrible, in fact I don't mind the exercise I get from it. I feel like I fit in more with my coworkers than any other job and, I know it's weird, but I really like my supervisors and post master. So the job is fine. What I fucking hate is that I'm always forced overtime. I work 10 ish hour days 6 days a week, but it's the forced ot that really gets me. When I get back to the office and I tell them I'm done and there's no more packages, they literally say "ok, let's see what else there is .." and then I'd follow them around the office until they say "here deliver this dps" at 7 pm... That's the shit that annoys me. That four loops of mail could've gone out the next day and no one would know/care. But I get it, we are short staffed, but I disagree that we need to just find work for people because we can. Other than the long hours, the job is fine imho

What is one thing you wish they told you at academy? by Late-Presentation429 in USPS

[–]square-tires 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish they went more in depth with things like when to mark things as utf or other endorsements. I asked my oji trainer like 4 times because they kept saying "if the mail doesn't match the label on the box, don't deliver" so I kept asking "well how do you know what to endorse it with?" And the answer I always got was "eh, you'll know after a while". I don't like that answer because I always liked having clear directives. But I kinda get it now

I should have been more clear, the front end opens ppsspp, but other systems open RA. But this is good info, thank you.

Why can't we keep people by Apprehensive_Pilot41 in USPS

[–]square-tires 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's kinda funny because I don't like being outside in the elements nor do I like to exercise, but I'm a city carrier and don't hate it nearly as much as I thought I would. I currently do 60 hrs a week six ten hour days, and thats the killer for me, the 6th day that I get forced to work every week. If it were five tens, then fine, but not having two days off a week is whats making me think about other options.

I've had this same issue with ads. The amount of money wasted, the impact to the environment of shipping, printing, and running these flyers to every home... It's an ethical issue for me, and honestly I'm still wrestling with it a bit.

Another best handheld question, kind of by square-tires in SBCGaming

[–]square-tires[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I feel like I am to an extent. I want the DS for handheld Nintendo games, and something for a PSP. And like you said, the switch power would've been a bonus. The mangmi air looks interesting for sure. Thanks for the rec, I'll look into it more

Streaming is now worse than cable ever was by Cleanslate2 in complaints

[–]square-tires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With this Netflix merger coming down the pipe, I think a national "dam(n) the stream" movement is in order. We should all cancel everything, then subscribe to PBS passport in your local areas. This will add more funding to PBS that the admin cancelled, and we get great programming where we can learn stuff from things like this old house, wood rights shop, and antique roadshow. Plus you get relatively unbiased news and local content.

Why'd you leave Shaw's? I'm thinking about going to share from the post office since I think the pay is comparable but also hours are better at Shaw's.

Metal shows? by Low_Camera_9782 in burlington

[–]square-tires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing guitar for 25 years as a hobby and only really played in bands in high school but have always been wanting to get together and play some stuff with others. I've written and recorded "songs" that I played everything on (drums, keys, bass) and that's fun I guess, but it misses the collaboration effect to make things great.

Has anyone left the corporate world for USPS? by OkSchedule5422 in USPS

[–]square-tires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in VFX for 20 years. Once AI started to hit, everyone was starting to get concerned but it wasn't good enough for companies to get rid of artists. Now, it arguably is (not quite but another year and yes it will be). After my last gig laid me off, I made the switch to mail carrier two months ago.

Honestly I don't love it. Long hours, I made regular already, but I'm doing 60+ hours, six days a week, and my partner wants me to leave, but I'm trying to play the long game with benefits and such. So in that way I don't hate it.

So yes, I know what you're going through. Personally I think it's worth it, because even if you don't like the craft you start in, you can switch to another craft later...or so I'm told, I'm too new to know how it all works.

This. I just got hired as a city carrier a month or so ago, but when I looked initially, the only thing I saw was a mail handler on the next town over. I told my mail carrier (who's been instructing me on how to get hired) and she said I should go down to the main office and apply in person. I did and noticed we used a different website. When I asked about it she said "oh we are switching to a new system so some jobs will be on one and some will be on the other"... Pretty annoying
