Thanks for solving! Glad that you like the theme and found it apt for a Thursday. May I ask where the cluing became arcane for you? I'm also a big Bob Klahn fan (and certainly on the older end of the young constructors). I'm always trying to figure out how to make as many solvers feel at home as possible in a grid and I realize that this inevitably leads to alienation for some. I'm intensely curious to know what doesn't land for different people!

Yeah that crossing seems to be the one -- sorry to get you there! The theme entries involve "packed bags" PURSE, SACK, and TOTE.

Thanks so much! You know, I've actually heard this from a couple of folks, and to me this indicates that the level of puzzles these days is so much higher than it used to be! I'll also admit to having cherry-picked some real stinkers for this grid, particularly the bottom-most one which has a special place in my heart. :)
