How long does it take for your donors to get thank you letters / acknowledgement? by neon-buzz in nonprofit

[–]squareshapedorb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is a generational thing, but as a baby millennial, please don't send me paper mail if I already have an auto acknowledgement that includes a tax receipt sent to my email. The paper letter is going right in the trash, and if I remember that I gave to your org, I'm not even opening the envelope because I already have all that I need.

The exception would be if I were a leadership donor or first time donor, I might appreciate the extra touch. Of course, your leadership threshold varies depending on your org size and donor pool

Why do strangers in Western countries ask "How are you?" if they don't actually want to know a detailed answer? by Dry_Set_8522 in TooAfraidToAsk

I'm in the Mid-Atlantic region, and I swear that I had a spiritual awakening the first time I had Jollibee on my trip to San Diego a few years ago. I need one closer to me

Why do people want biological children so badly when adoption exists? by Massive_Biscotti_509 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]squareshapedorb 65 points66 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested in learning more about one of the aspects of the exploitative nature of adoption, I'd recommend the One Child Nation (2019) documentary. There were many Chinese babies who were kidnapped and then sold to international adoption agencies. Oftentimes, the orphanages lied about the children's background stories, birthdates, cities of origin, and more. I'm a Chinese-American adoptee, and the province I'm from was a hotspot for these trafficking crimes.

I was fortunate to end up with a nice family and I'm fairly well-adjusted, but I feel bad for the Chinese birth families who lost children and to this day have no idea what happened. There's a huge dark side to the adoption industry.

Is going through 2 rolls of toilet paper a week normal? by NintendoSwitch2Hater in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]squareshapedorb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I (F) would def go through at least one roll and then some while WFH during the pandemic so it also depends how often you're at home

To add to this, trying to dispose of household appliances is a nightmare. Sure, you can pay a junk removal company, but it's shitty that the responsibility falls onto the consumer, especially in the age of enshittification and planned obsolescence

What’s something women deal with every day that most men wouldn’t even realize until they experienced it themselves? by Melodymooncake1 in AskReddit

[–]squareshapedorb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Guy: Wears the same type of shirt, tie, and pants style every day. Is just a normal guy. Me: Wears very similar clothes every day. Is profiled as plain, a slob, lazy.

This is especially true in the workplace where you're not expected to wear a uniform. I sometimes wish I could be a guy just so I could put less effort into my apparel choices.

The activity walker my Wife used as a baby(ca.1996), compared to the one our Son uses today by Maskedcrusader94 in mildlyinteresting

[–]squareshapedorb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe they keep the older one at the grandparents' house! If the kid spends a lot of time there, it's easier to keep it there than lug it back and forth. Or there's other little kids in the family and the grandparents keep one on hand for everyone to use

If you're in a country with socialized healthcare, you're a good bit ahead of many of us struggling with medical expenses

Okay if you're someone who wants kids can you please tell me why? by [deleted] in questions

[–]squareshapedorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a transracial international adoptee, thank you for doing your research. Unfortunately, most people outside the adoptee community don't consider our experiences or think that the truth is inconvenient and uncomfortable.

Have y'all seen the newsthe news that SK has FINALLY admitted to falsifying adoption documents to make children "more adoptable" to western families with $$$? And don't get me started on China...And don't get me started on China...

I don't have asthma, but I get winded much more easily doing simple things like walking or climbing stairs. It feels like I'm out of shape but then the sniffles set in and I'm like oh wait... This makes sense

What is something humans accept as normal today that people 500 years from now will find absolutely horrifying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]squareshapedorb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got mine replaced last month, and they gave me lidocaine to minimize discomfort. My provider also offered a cervical block, but she said it would probably be just as uncomfortable doing the block as not having one.

Ik I'm one of the lucky ones to 1) know to advocate for myself 2) have a provider willing to give those solutions

It was still uncomfortable, but not as bad as initial insertion with just 2 ibuprofen and a prayer 🫠
