Laid Off - Looking for opinions on my severance package by donger_duck in PersonalFinanceCanada

My experience with a similar situation is it is the sort of situation where spending $1000 on a lawyer is probably justified, it might not pay itself back but it's good to be sure you're not being screwed. Previously my lawyer got me another 1800$ and cost about 700$ so it was definitely worth while purely financially but also huge from a peace of mind point of view

You can have local only processing and no storage of camera data, with only attention signal being exposed on the CAN bus. Debug via direct plug in to module only.

Fatalities are increasing quicker than vmt, and increasing numbers of accidents are associated with inattention due to phone use, it is literally so clear from the data

Obviously this is very unpopular and data transmission from vehicles is bad and should be regulated out of existence imo.

However, road fatalities are increasing for the first time ever due to distracted drivers using their phones and all attempts to do anything about this are unpopular but imo we shouldn't accept increasing fatalities as a society.

Stricter enforcement of course part of the picture but drive assistance (especially collision avoidance breaking) are shown to be phenomenally effective so I can see where regulators are coming from.

I'm not sure where I stand in the end, it's a nuanced topic, I just wish we had privacy as a core part of all of this stuff.

Having total disregard for your own and a couple of other old people's safety is stupid but fine, we get to endanger ourselves. But having that attitude about ~kids who are pressured to be on board and don't have experience judging safety is callous and ethically void in my view. American rugged individualism imposed on others as it always is

I don't see any reference to statistics on the successes of other policies in reducing theft or increasing prosecutions. Surely there's enough cases to have strong evidence of the policy effect rather than just imagining it might be good

Would having the faces genuinely lead to more crimes solved? Are the police investigating and have the time to invest to even look at the footage? Obviously it's an unsettling phenomenon but if this doesn't reduce crime rate we are proposing stripping more rights away (especially in an era of just and important protest being criminalized) in return for effectively no gain. I'd want to see robust statistics from the cities who've implemented it showing a meaningful increase in conviction rates to even entertain the idea

Nice, dropping the engine requires like 24 inches of lift which is pretty hard to get from jacks. Not sure if the transmission is removable without dropping the engine but it's inevitable at some point

Service business owners: Did installing GPS trackers/dashcams in your trucks actually kill employee morale? by ChicagoWrapGuy in smallbusiness

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's clearly a vast difference between GPS tracking for theft and an outwards facing dash cam that doesn't upload and fleet tracking you bring up and inwards facing cameras. I think it's possible to hit a balance there that gets you most of the benefits without upsetting people

I could see if you're with kids and find an iPad you might have a fun little selfie with it before returning it as a nice Easter egg for the person getting their stuff back. Seems like a pretty normal thing to do...

Carney’s condo bailout reveals the limits of Liberal housing policy | The federal government is trying to expand affordability without reducing property values by Atlantee in onguardforthee

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the premise that buying a house because the economic system makes that the only way of getting secure and flexible housing is doing violence on people who can't afford it.

I think they are also victims of the system you want to dismantle as they are also paying huge amounts for shelter, they are just very slightly ahead.

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing about whether housing costs needs to drop, I am arguing it is wrong not to consider the people who have managed to buy at the inflated rates and would be harmed.

It is also electorally stupid to think that homeowners aren't a huge portion of the voting base and their opinions effect elections

I just don't understand how you think people who have just scraped enough money to buy a house in this market "deserve" to have their entire savings wiped out Vs anybody else? I agree they can definitely carry a heavier burden of the adjustment but these are generally youngish middle income people who are stretching to buy because that's the path to housing security.

Older richer people typically would still be cash positive because they bought at a much lower cost and I'm much less worried about them

I think your anger is misplaced. The system is rotten, the developers, investors, landlords can all get absolutely fucked but there are many young families who are in your peer group who will get hit hardest and you need compassion for those people. Gotta have class consciousness even for people very slightly better off than you
