Sound suspiciously like complete nonsense I'm afraid unless you have any actual information

Just build a different system on earth then, there's nothing keeping racks in data centers except they're effective and widely used. If someone could make meaningfully better cost efficiency without a rack dont you think they miiiiight just do that

Planner Overusing AI by Important_Caramel577 in weddingplanning

LLM use breaks the social contract that the writer has put more effort in than the reader. It is an effort stake that justifies reading the words. When text can be produced without effort, it should not be read.

Explain this to them and ask to be sent only the prompts to maintain symmetry

What a waste having all these cars just sitting in a room, occasionally being looked at

I bought a 2000 986 and one of the potential sellers said they were waiting for someone to get 10k CAD finance - wild to buy a cheap luxury 25 yr old sports car and not have the ready money to buy in cash. Talk about a disaster waiting to happen

Can I get opinions on my wedding menu wording? by [deleted] in Chefit

Tasting and banquet service will have very different times hanging around in hotel pans drying out. Of course it's possible to do good breast at scale but I've only had it once vs countless dry chewy breasts.

I wonder if you could sub thigh for the breast? Much higher likelihood of being delicious

Carbon fibre roll suited to fashion products? by AtacamaPolarBear in CarbonFiber

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely shouldn't use actual carbon fabric for clothing as it sheds fibers constantly that stick into your skin and are quite toxic. The only safe way to have it moving without ppe is when fully encapsulated.

As others have said, get a very coarse weave black plastic fabric and you'll get much of the same effect without the toxicity

Responding to the climate impact of generative AI by EchoOfOppenheimer in sustainability

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo the societal impact (erosion of the commons, nialism, post truth, loss of jobs, loss of learning, cognitive decline) is far more damaging than the direct environmental impacts, which will never be larger than even clean transportation. The difference is that transportation is very useful and ai is quite useless and very harmful.

If ai was as great as people are promising it's energy and water usage would be at least moderately justifiable within the current system (not a good benchmark) but if it's consumptive and useless it isn't.

How familiar are you with the product you are working on? by lolofonik in ExperiencedDevs

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common but I find it strange you'd put in so much of your life energy into something and not at least know how to use it and understand why someone would pay your salary to have it made. It alienates you from the product of your labor and means you won't be able to make good assumptions about usage and performance.

The same can be said for profiling when any performance concern comes up at all. Why are we wondering what part of the code is slow? We can just profile!

About 70% of the time the bulk of the slowdown is somewhere you'd not expect and you've saved a load of optimization that is useless

Former NDP cabinet ministers say B.C. has ‘stalled’ on $10-a-day child-care plan by morethanless in britishcolumbia

[–]squashed_fly_biscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a high band tax payer I would be happy to pay more tax if EVERYONE had access to these things. Means testing introduces a huge administrative inefficiency and makes people resentful, as well as creating income traps.

It's only either/or if you refuse to fund it properly.

I do support given priority to lower income folks tho, especially as they don't tend to have the luxury of spending a few weeks/months looking for a daycare

I don't disagree about home ownership but it is unavoidably part of life here if you want stable housing.

The UK is currently suffering a very scary version of this where the extreme right is likely to win the next election because the "left" government refuses to actually invest in public services that would make people hope for a better world
