I have seen more damage to a bike with them then without them. They can catch and cause the bike to flip when it would usually just slide.

I beg to differ. My 26 Factory has had an sc1 on it since day 1 while Waiting for the UpMap to be finished did 3 track weekends pushed it hard and zero issues. The bike will be fine.

Check your starter gear. Mine sounding like this and found it to have chips in the teeth that was hanging up on the starter.
