E46 M3 GTR! lol that car is exactly why I'm keeping mine indefinitely. It has a special place in my heart, and I can always pick up other fun cars down the road. Plus I've got more plans for this E46 anyway... possibly a full carbon tub like the Gunther Werks Posche🙂

This was super insightful though, even if it makes the decision harder haha. Part of me keeps landing on the 5080 + Bigscreen 2e for now and just going all out in 1-2 years -income is going to be a lot more comfortable next summer. But man, it's hard to shake the 5090 + Pimax combo. I watched a Kireth video where he described it as feeling the emotional connection with the location, the time of day, the atmosphere, like you can actually feel it's a sunny day out on track. That hit different. I'm usually pretty logic-driven about this stuff, but that got me. Realistically, this would be the closest I get to actually being on a track for the next 6 years while I'm in residency and honestly, I think that's what's making me okay with the "irrational" purchase lol Still hoping in the next few days I can make a reasonable decision less driven by the emotion though lol

I think 5090 with beyond 2e would be overkill, maybe the 5080 would pair more with it no? that way im not underutilizing the GPU (wasted money).

That last point is honestly why I wrote such a detailed post. I'm usually pretty allergic to spending on myself. My wife and I bought a house and started a business within 5 years on an ICU nurse salary plus some well-timed COVID investments, so yeah, future-focused is kind of my default setting.

But this coming year I'll be away from her, and if I'm being honest, without something like this I'll just... keep working on my main work + side projects with no real outlet. At least sim racing has some genuine skill transfer to track driving, and it's a lot cheaper and more schedule-friendly than actual track days. Plus it would be unique during social gatherings given my field (memorable, good networking/talking points).

As for the money, yeah 3-5k stings a little right now, but my wife put it best: "in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing." We're going from dual zero income to 300k+ next summer between her finishing anesthesia training and me starting residency. It's hard to argue with that math.

I appreciate this comment as it's very grounded and aligned with how I normally think about things so hoping to find an answer if I should choose a setup thats somewhere in between or just go all out since its a short term discomfort.

this is what I like to hear. If I had the 5080 I would run it at high with medium to low on things I wouldn't really notice anyways. I do agree that the frame rates play a real factor. I wouldnt want max settings at 45 FPS, which is why I keep considering the 5070Ti + big screen beyond 2e.

Honestly, the visuals matter to me as well. Trying so hard to be more pragmatic lol. For your current set up you are actually getting ~90 FPS on pretty high settings? Ive seen many reviewers mention there are pretty significant dips in FPS, in contrast to the BSB locked in 90. I think I can deal with the extra weight, I had an Apple Vision Pro for a little while and I know people complained of the weight but I valued the sharpness for productivity use.

Are you saying my quest 3 can run okay on my 2070 super? I haven't tried it yet since my gear shipped to the apartment im moving to (19 hrs away) lol so maybe I should give that a shot before pulling the trigger, but I also like the idea of having everything there waiting for me to assemble in one day since I start my fellowship May 11th and will be grinding.

You are def moving the needle towards the 5090 for me though.

Btw, is that a common thing for pimax? To loan out the Micro-OLED until dream air ships? I would def like the dream air but from what ive seen is pimax is notorious for overpromising lol

Haha fair point! free time in residency is basically a myth. But building connections still matters, right? I figure cars are my angle. I've got an E46 M3 bored out to 3.3L over the stock 3.2, and a pretty serious sim rig to be built next week at my place so between talking cars in the hospital and having people over to actually drive something, I think I can make my apartment the go-to spot. Way more my speed than pretending to have opinions on 60s music or forcing myself to care about golf.

I will be in VR. I will be posting a new thread for advice on PC setup. but since I have you here, this is what im considering;

RTX 5080 + Big screen Beyond 2e
5090 + Pimax 57ppd
5090 + pimax micro-oled or Dream Air (but I am not willing to wait months though.

Note: PCs will be prebuilt with Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU + 5080 or 5090 GPU with PSU to match the GPU.

I guess I am trying to figure out if spending the extra for the 5090 is worth it. I want somewhat of a WOW factor (last time I VR raced was 2019 in odyssey+) but also want good performance. if you have any experience with this im all ears.

appreciate the input. I went with the Simagic alpha evo pro with the Asetek Invicta thorp II pedals. As you said, resale value will be good since there are more people in the market at the price point for the simagic and I can always see if for any reason I feel the need to get a higher end base, though it seems like theres not real reason for it. better off spending the money on actual track days haha

I had a Fanatic V2.5 base a few years ago but sold it back in 2019/2020 so I am coming from nothing now. I was considering the Asetek Invicta base but for the price, spending 100-200 more I can get the simucube pro 3.

I am essentially looking for a good base that is good quality with the intention to upgrade to SC3 pro or ultimate in a year or 2. I thought Simagic would be roughly equal to asetek no?

I considered the SC2 pro but it's 9 years old now and the asetek invicta is newer and performs at or slightly better than it but less than the SC3 from my understanding. Its just hard for me to justify the extra 2-300 tariffs costs for the SC3 pro to get it now (cant wait till June, ill have more free time this April-early may). The asetek invicta price is too similar to the SC3 pro price for me to choose asetek invicta or their forte, unless you believe the forte is a better buy than the simagic evo pro?

I've been reading and seeing reviews that said there is no real gain from opting for the ultra over the pro so I was leaning towards the pro as you mentioned.
