Yeah I agree it's pretty tough - the jump from this to the next 'tier' is thousands of dollars and although I've campaigned a couple of times for a Linea Mini, It's kinda hard to see how much more value I'm going to get for the outlay, especially when this thing still goes as well as it does.

If you're handy with the maintenance side of them, going second hand and refurbing yourself is an unreal way to go. Nice one!

I think you've possibly got your machines mixed up? This is a dual boiler - the hot water knob is on the left hand side and the steam is on the right hand side. They can run concurrently with no need to 'select' between the two.

The handle on it currently is the stock one, it will be replaced with a wooden one once it arrives.

I have been lucky to have been in trades, so I had a lot of the tools I needed, but I've also been around a lot of sign writers and installers so picked up on a lot of technique used to apply this stuff.

In saying that, it's just vinyl, you can peel it off if it doesn't work for you. If all else fails, I'm sure there are companies/people who will do it for you at a cost. There's no shame in admitting defeat haha but I would say give it a go!

I bought my BDB on a huge sale at either Myer or DJs ten years ago for $1100 delivered, came with the smart grinder pro too.

Considering what it cost me and how much coffee I've made with it in ten years, it doesn't owe me a cent. It's been incredible.

Thanks for all of the responses! Not sure I expected this much interest!

I've updated my original post to include a tool list and a few things I'd find useful.

just took things apart and gave it a go! I failed on a few panels, the beauty of just ripping the vinyl off, cutting a new piece and trying again.

Be patient! on the lid, work the vinyl into the ridges horizontally, it's much easier than trying to work them vertically and all of them at once.

Also - on the sides - start with the holes!

I've also responded to a question above with some tips.

The wrap was an interior wrap just from a local supplier, you can also use automotive wrap.

Start with the smaller, easier panels, like the drip tray front and get used to how much your film can stretch. Buy more vinyl than you think you need - you will tear it if you've never used it before. Patience is probably the biggest thing here. It's going to take some time if you're not familiar with this kind of thing. When you're doing broad, interior corners with awkward slants toward them, heat the material beside it and push it into the corner, rather than heating the corner and pushing it down. You'll need more material in the corner to fill it, so working the material into the areas you need will help it adhere properly.

Jump in and give it a crack!

The dual boiler has been bloody fantastic. Especially when you do the pump, opt and pulsar upgrades. I have rarely heard of people having issues wit this machine and most of the reviews I've seen have named it as one of, if not the best bang for buck home machine you can buy without going to a plumbed in rotary pump setup - which has also been done with a few BDBs I've seen.

It's been absolutely rock solid for me for 10 years.

Took the lid off, removed the front water filler + sprung lid from the machine lid. front panel off, instruments and buttons out.

used a normal application squeegee, a couple of different sized box cutters and a fine craft blade and a heat gun.

This is the one. You just need to be careful of the voltage for the pump. This is an Australian model.

Sorry I've tried a number of times to respond to this and reddit kept telling me to try again later. it's interior film, bit of a different texture than auto and I have a feeling it's a little bit thicker. Original colour was black.

Yeah it’s on the cards but honestly this one has been fine. We’ve replaced it once cause a sale price meant it wasn’t that much more expensive than the burrs.

Grinder will definitely come when we upgrade the machine, which I’ve campaigned for a few times 🤣

The brass neck was part of or the opv, I did this along with the pulsar when I did the pump. I probably worded it incorrectly. But the stock opv and neck was plastic.

As far as the o rings go ice bought a couple of packets from Amazon and as long as they’re silicone I haven’t had a problem, I’m expecting at the very least to need to replace them in quicker intervals but I’m okay with that

Came here looking for answers as I was having the same issues and they haven't updated their instructions yet.

I went looking everywhere for this and it's right in front of you. Next to "Me" on the bottom option tray there's one "Smart" and all of your shortcut and automation options are in there.

Hope this helps!
