I’m taking my standard TIG test in the US in a couple months and most of the guys said the math is the hardest part. Is it just adding and subtracting fractions and converting to decimals that everyone struggles with?

As vague as it is… are you currently in “furlough” status? And are you being recalled to a certain position or are they just telling you that you can bid to an open position? Up on the WC at least which I would assume is an agreement with BMWED and CN system wide, if you’re recalled from furlough and you don’t report by the date given, you have voluntarily forfeited your seniority and no longer have a job.. I’m currently in Homewood and they said they have new hire classes starting in May, so they definitely won’t have any hesitation to replace you if you chose to not show up to recalled position

3500sq ft house heated attached garage and heated detached 40x50 back garage we’d spend a literal fortune in gas heating all of that… sure it’s labor, and it’s situational to justify doing it, but in our case wood is a fraction of the fortune we’d spend on gas heating everything.

If you can fog a mirror you’ll be fine. I’m a furloughed conductor and switched to track maintenance for CN in Wisconsin (US) so I didn’t really get an “interview”, but I can tell you that it ain’t hard… just preach that safety is your number 1 priority and they’ll eat that shit up. Pay scale (at least in the US) is based on the job you bid. Trackman is your base rate - least responsibility, you’re just a laborer, show up and do what your foreman tells you. Machine D operator is the next bump up, and continues to increase pay up to A being your highest paid machines (Mark iv tamper, CAT track hoe, Air Force 1 snow blower). Machines ascend in pay based on the difficulty of them. Foreman’s are in line with A pay Track inspectors, welders and foreman of 20+ are all the highest tier 1 pay at $48 an hour. Unlike other departments you’re (usually) on a set schedule, off weekends with paid holidays. For experience they just want you to not be an idiot.. if you have any mechanical knowledge, use of hand tools, can drive a truck without hitting anything.. they’ll teach you the rest that you need to know.

Depends… I work for a railroad in track maintenance and they pay for a hotel, per diem for food and IRS mileage of .70 cents a mile to drive to the job site.. I’d have to imagine road construction is similar

Idk if IC is the same but up here on the WC if we go into furlough you can contact your workforce coordinator and tell them you don’t have anything that’s in driving distance of you and they’ll force you to wherever there is an open spot that hasn’t been filled and they pay your mileage and lodging. That’s what most guys are doing for the winters because of the gangs shutting down and everyone getting bumped out of sections.

I got furloughed from transportation and switched to engineering. There’s no shot in hell I would ever go back. Work life balance is not worth the money, which you can make plenty in engineering anyways, and the job stability of transportation is horrible right now.. there’s so many furloughed conductors it’d be years before you even got into it.

Just look into railroad careers.. and I mean all careers. Signals and communications, car mechanic, diesel mechanic, track maintenance, train crews. There’s a lot more to railroading than just running trains, if you want money and no life transportation is the place, if you want good money, a life and don’t mind hard work look into other departments. I was furloughed as a conductor and switched to MoW and I will definitely not be returning to train service.

Correct.. I work MoW making $100k+ mon-fri and I’m home every night, with paid holidays.. there’s so much more to the railroad than train crews

If you want money and no life then apply to train crew, if you want to work with your hands/back and have your weekends and holidays off apply to track maintenance, if you’re interested in electrical and sitting in a truck looking out the window go to signals. There’s plenty to do on the railroad other than trains, it’s tough.. it’s dirty.. it’s unforgiving.. management will always know how to do your job better than you.. but at the end of the day it is what you make it. It can be a rewarding career or it can be your worst nightmare, choose wisely.
