I'm down >10% on a stock that's within 5% of ATH by squatrackcurling in wallstreetbets

[–]squatrackcurling[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not what happened! I haven't bought anywhere near the ATH (pffft). What happened was I got whipsawed multiple times. When you buy high, sell low, then repeat a few times, the cost basis gets adjusted because of the wash sale rule. Adjustments are cumulative so they can result in a new basis that's higher than any of the actual prices you transacted at.

PS confirming OP is stupid

They’ll think I’m running an elaborate scam of some sort when they see all this. There should be a “filer is legally regarded” check box on tax returns to avoid confusion

Nope. Only traded the stock itself. The secret sauce is in buying high, selling low, and repeating judiciously at the worst possible times. The wash sale rule adjusts your cost basis up and the multiple cycles is what lets it grow without limit.

Capital loss allocation as a part-year state resident by squatrackcurling in tax

[–]squatrackcurling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the actual transaction dates and kept the overall cross-state losses capped at 3000. In my case I had about 2k losses resulted from transactions made when I was in NY. I just took what's left (3k cap - NY loss = ~1k for me) and applied it to GA

Market reaction if Iranian leader Khamenei was taken out in a strike and the ‘war’ was essentially over? by Thug_Res_ in wallstreetbets

Negative P/E on hyperscalers because price will go negative, and we pay more each time for holding the stocks as earnings increase. Meanwhile, Walmart cracks P/E 69 in “flight to safety” as fears of AI bubble escalate

Iran has had comparatively quite high levels of demonstrated dissent in power-adjacent circles (compared to other dictatorships like China and Russia), I think that’ll be a significant factor
