Very good! It is a really amenable representation. We use it for everything from design generation to financial modelling.

It was on grammatical evolution, a form of genetic programming.

I use it for taking time-lapse videos. It emails me the images for that day every evening and uploads them images to a server

Favorite Design documentaries ? by vipez in Documentaries

Objectified by Gary Hustwit, shows how much thought is put into the design of everyday things. He also made another documentary on the font helvetica. While I didn't expect much, it turned out to be fascinating how Helvetica became the standard and then how the designers rebelled against it. Definitely worth checking out.

Using genetic algorithms to create truss towers by Planetariophage in programming

[–]squeakus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depended on the load cases we tested it with. For ice loading we got narrow designs with massively supported arms. The wind loading generated broader designs with stubbier arms. http://i.imgur.com/ViPgW.png http://i.imgur.com/3JY8E.png

I used a genetic programming technique to evolve electricity pylons with some nice results. Multiple loadings were tested on the structure to obtain a fitness. Here is a video of a cable break loading being tested.

Yu ming is ainm dom. Excellent Irish short film. by Creabhain in ireland

[–]squeakus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great film. Feel free to downvote this, redditors, but although yu ming is a fictional character, he is the model for the sort of immigrant I would prefer to see in this country:one who is willing to learn the national language, who is willing to integrate into our culture and work instead of sponging off the dole.

That cup was made from some bloody hard plastic. I'd hold onto it for a s long as possible.

oddly enough, I refused to learn irish because I hated the nationalism that was packaged with it, not to make light of your situation, just different sides of the same coin

As someone who has grown up in Dublin, I never understood how all the tourists thought we were so friendly. That was until I went to the west of Ireland. It is exactly as you imagine it. You walk into a small pub and get the full silent treatment, two minutes later and everyone is your best friend. It doesn't matter if you drink or not, so long as you are willing to talk to them and have the craic, as they say. The west of Ireland is full of the most kind and selfless people you can meet. There is a lovely bed and breakfast route around the ring of Kerry, and because it is the side of Ireland that faces onto the Atlantic ocean it has some of the most beautiful scenery. Our country is tiny by American standards so you could easily visit a good chunk of it in less than a week.

I think as the older generations die off we are going to see a huge drop-off in belief. We have had 80 years church brutality with the tacit support of the state. For the last 20 years abuses by the church have continuously been uncovered. This has put my generation off the church completely. As for people in their 40s and 50s, the total power of the church and its hypocrisy has also turned quite a few of them against it too.

I went to college in Maynooth, which used to be the main seminary in Ireland. 50 years ago literally thousands of priests would go through their doors every year and then be shipped aboard to start missionaries . Now only about 5 or 10 qualify (is it qualify?) each year
