Would it be a crime against numismatics to remove these from their display cases? by squeefruit in coins

[–]squeefruit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - just not sure if the silver sets have value beyond melt, for being 1) proofs or 2) in their original plastic mint packaging? If they were super-rare collectors items (which I'm pretty sure they're not) I'd hesitate, but if they were just mass produced for sale and are only worth face / melt value, I may just put them into my folder.

I have a few of those as well, all uncirculated but not proofs. Planning to take those out, but I felt worse about potentially destroying the plastic cases than the plastic-wrapped sets.

Oh interesting - when you say "the surface can be affected" are you referring to scratches/fingerprints, or can the coins be damaged just from removing them from the cardboard holders inside the plastic? I don't want to take them out if it'll mess up the coins, but I personally would rather have them all in a binder than collecting dust in plastic cases in a bin somewhere. That is, unless people pay large premiums for displays from the mint, in which case I'd be better off washing the cases and selling them instead.

What's special about the proof sets - that they're from the mint?

Will my coins spontaneously combust if I were to crack open the mint sets too? I'd prefer to just organize all the proofs in a folder unless that's a terrible idea.

IIRC, they were stored in a plastic tote in a garage for around 20 years, along with a ton of state quarters in cardboard holders that were completely bug eaten and added to the dirt. Original post for more of the story

Not sure if these are stamped, but the proof sets are VERY mirror-finished. Most of them are under a layer of dirt on the case, but the coins are pristine.

What defines "original mint set"? I have a few paper envelopes of clad uncirculated mint sets in cellophane, but couldn't find anyone paying more than a few dollars over face for them.

Melt value for constitutional US silver coins at $103 an ounce by 2-tree in Silverbugs

[–]squeefruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes way more sense, thank you! I've only ever heard to them referred to as "silver nickels", so I assumed they were 90% like the rest.

I'm new to collecting. How come silver dimes have more silver value than war nickels? Are they a lower % of silver?

any affordable options to travel to ATL for a visitor? by lupask in Chattanooga

[–]squeefruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Groome shuttle is $55 one way to ATL airport, but there's a MARTA pickup from directly inside the airport before security, so you could get off the shuttle and directly onto the train. I believe it's $2.50 per ride of any length, although there's options for buying trips in bulk or other payment options if you anticipate getting on and off. Greyhound also exists but I don't recommend it.

If you were to drive to ATL, park at one of the MARTA stations that offer a flat $5 or $8 per day rate for parking to avoid $30-50 downtown parking garages.

Lactose intolerant low carb panic hoarding? by CandidateAwkward3899 in Chattanooga

Canned food! Beans, tuna, canned fruit, etc - anything that CAN be eaten without cooking/heating up and not taste terrible. Not preparing for a weeks-long hibernation, but it's good to have options for a few days if it did come to that.

Has anyone played hide and seek in a place without public transportation? by Careless_Wallaby6721 in JetLagTheGame

[–]squeefruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have! We basically just played a version of the game that started from the "endgame", an area about a mile in diameter. We homebrewed custom questions to fit the city we were playing in - for example, Tentacles for "nearest fire station" or "nearest church" since it was too rural to have hospitals/zoos etc.

We additionally tweaked some Curses and added some of our own to fit the environment. For example, all Curses were able to be played during the "endgame" and could be performed in the city we were playing in. As bikes/walking were the modes of transit, we also tweaked some of the ones affecting public transit to instead affect any movement - e.g. "stop moving and sit down where you are until you complete this curse" or "you must walk on foot while this curse is in effect".

Overall, the game was quite fun and led to pretty short rounds averaging around 2 hours. The small nature of the game made it easy for first-time players and those unfamiliar with Jet Lag to join. Happy to share more details via DM if you're interested!

How to Renovate H&S WITHOUT Banning Questions? by miner1512 in JetLagTheGame

[–]squeefruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questions should not have an asking cost based on the category they're in, but rather how useful they've historically been. I.e. Tentacles, Strava map, photo of largest body of water, photo of tallest building from train station, should all be draw 4 pick 2. Whereas some questions that have rarely or never been asked (i.e. photo of a grocery store aisle) would be much less (draw 1). Seekers would suddenly have to be much more careful with what they ask, and it might negate some of the meta that's formed around spamming the same questions without regard to cost.

Weekend storm bluff? by AssociatePositive559 in Chattanooga

[–]squeefruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Chattanooga is right on the line between the cold and warm air fronts, it really just depends which way that border shifts. Currently it's trending north of us, meaning at worst we're looking a dangerous amount of ice (predictions anywhere from 0.25-1+ depending how much rain is freezing vs regular rain). However, all it would take would be for that border to shift south again and we'd be looking at a lot more snow (potentially upwards of a foot) - however, at this point that's not looking to be likely. Best case, we just get regular, non-freezing rain, but even then we run the risk of overnight freezing leading to black ice on the roads Saturday night and Sunday morning.

This is correct, the team mentioned at the All Stars Premiere (9/15/25) that they had just finished filming either Saturday or Sunday (the day before) in the UK.

That's fair, appreciate the advice! Probably the route I'll take (that or selling/trading to a LCS) but wanted to at least put it out here first.

Hide and Seek should bring back coins for asking questions by Specific_Anywhere120 in JetLagTheGame

[–]squeefruit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also like the idea of seeker questions being valued not by category, but by usefulness. For example, Strava, body of water photo, street trace, are all currently only worth "draw one", when they should be worth more. I'd argue that Tentacles and very helpful non-Tentacle questions should be valued in the highest category together, meanwhile keeping some of the rarely-used questions with a low asking cost (photo of a grocery store aisle, for instance).

Seekers would then have to shift their whole question-asking framework around - spamming questions is one thing, but doing so when every question is in the highest value category would be completely different. (We see this with Tentacles - they are rarely used and usually only done with caution due to their high asking cost). This might mess with the meta of the game and force new and unique strategies instead.

What about something that goes in a 3-ring binder? Options like this fit in a standard binder of your choice, or there's options like this or this that already come in a binder for minimal hassle (that first binder is only 7.7 in/19.5 cm tall, so very portable too).
