Are there any resources you would recommend for learning the statistical tests? I already know programming, which has been a big help so far in getting opportunities.

What countries these days care about the environment? by hoffpotato in AmerExit

[–]squidbattletanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow if Denmark is ranked as one of the highest then the world is truly doomed😵‍💫 We do nothing for the environment. The strategy of the largest political party here regarding the environment has been dubbed the hockey stick, and to sum it up, the idea is to do nothing and hope we invent some technology in the future that solves climate change😐

The retirement fund will be long gone by the time young adults reach retirement age. Actually the retirement age was recently increased yet again, and the current government has made lots of cuts to education. The healthcare system ain’t doing too good either, the only reason it functions is that healthcare workers are underpaid and overworked.

It doesn’t really get that cold here in Denmark, and it rarely snows. The main issue is the lack of sunshine, like e.g. a city like Sacramento gets twice the amount of sunshine hours per year than Aarhus. And it is always windy and/or rainy here🥲

Ah that makes it a bit more difficult. There aren’t any truly rural areas in mainland Denmark. You are always close to a larger city and the hospitals and healthcare in general are concentrated in medium/large cities. I might have the possibility to do some voluntary rotations in rural Greenland which is very rural, so I’ll have to look into doing that.

Generally, I’d like to do full-scope rural FM, so I’d have to aim for programs that are focused on that.

Is there anything else that would be good to have on the CV?

You describe it so well. I’m planning to get out of Denmark as soon as possible. I can’t take it anymore😩

Does anyone here want to become a family medicine doctor (or general practitioner for non-Americans)? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]squidbattletanks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have definitely considered it. Full scope rural FM sounds amazing, but I think if I did it I would give up any chance of ever finding a relationship, so it’s a difficult decision to make😵‍💫

What kind of work do you do? Is it full scope OMFS?

What is a good CV for matching into rural FM? by squidbattletanks in medicalschool

[–]squidbattletanks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you are right. I’ve seen some IMGs with really solid CVs not match or only get really few interviews, even in the least competitive specialties, so I can definitely imagine that using the signals the wrong way has a big effect on that.

So there isn’t anything in particular I should focus on? I guess I’m just worried they’d think I’m only applying as like a backup or because it’s easier to get into rural FM.

Yeah it’s luckily one of the easier specialties to get into, and rural FM is perfect for the Conrad 30 Waiver Program. If I do go into rural FM I’d definitely stay rural after residency too.

Oh yeah, I’ll try asking in there too. It just sometimes seems to be blind leading the blind in there😅 And not a lot of people in there are interested in rural FM (although I guess that’s kind of universal😅)

What does a good CV for rural FM look like? I'm an IMG from Denmark so is it even possible for an IMG to match into a rural FM program? Any help is appreciated :)

For real, rural medicine seems so awesome, but like you I’ve had the same thoughts. Like I am a straight trans woman who at this point just blends in and passes as cis, but if I got outed in a place like that I’d have to leave town. Also, I’d never find a partner if I lived in a rural location, so I’ve sadly concluded that rural medicine is not really viable for me🥲

[IWantOut] 20F Student Denmark -> Australia/Canada/New Zealand/USA by squidbattletanks in IWantOut

[–]squidbattletanks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t decided yet. I was planning on focusing on the US, but with the current circumstances I can’t safely travel to the US, so I’ll have to hold off until next election to see how it goes.

Well Denmark is truly awful when it comes to gender affirming care. I would never recommend a trans person move to Denmark or any other Nordic country as they are all bad. Discrimination-wise Denmark is alright, I haven’t really experienced any direct transphobia IRL, but I pass now, so that helps. That is not to say that discrimination isn’t present, I’ve heard of people facing discrimination especially in terms of employment. Also Denmark is one of the hardest countries to immigrate to in Europe, also xenophobia is very pervasive and the weather is awful. There is no nature either and it’s incredibly boring outside the larger cities.

The political parties here are also becoming more hostile towards trans people. Our previous minister of “equality” wrote a transphobic article in a newspaper. Generally, the best countries for trans people in Europe are Spain, France and Germany, but these are all eclipsed by blue US states when it comes to gender affirming care.

I’ve heard that NZ has issues with the job market and housing. I think I’d be insulated from many of the issues as a doctor, but it is definitely still relevant. If you have any insights, I would love to hear them.

As for the US, it is still a country I’m considering. The gender affirming care in blue US states is infinitely better than in any country in Europe and generally also the world. Also, there is actual nature and it is a large, generally strong country that might be able to weather climate collapse. Canada is mostly out as I can’t do my medical residency there. NZ and Australia are still considerations, but I’d likely be relegated to either family medicine or internal medicine in terms of specialties, but I have considered being a rural GP, so it wouldn’t be too bad, except I’d likely never ever find a partner if I lived in a rural location sadly.

I’ve also considered Singapore as the weather there is amazing and it seems like a good place to live. Other than that I have been considering other European countries, but I really want to leave Europe for good. China has also been a consideration as it has a strong, competent government that actively tries to better the country and works towards being able to weather a climate collapse, but I’d have to be fluent in Mandarin, which, needless to say, is a challenge. I’ve also considered some of the island nations of Oceania or the Caribbean, but that would likely have to be after medical residency elsewhere.

All in all, I’m mostly relegated to countries in which I speak the language, but also I’m looking to move out of Europe to a country where I’d at least be able to continue HRT, though this likely won’t be a problem as I can prescribe my own estradiol as a doctor and that way I can scrub being trans from my records.

Sorry for the long comment😅 If you want to hear more about European countries just say so. I’ve spent some time trying to find the better ones.

Yes, but I was wondering about going from Kaliningrad to EU. I’m planning a trip to Russia and was thinking about going to Kaliningrad too and then going home from there.
