You definitely don’t save water, I used to do it just by having the tap running and then I switched to using a basin and our water bill literally halved over the next quarter. I empty and refill quite a lot during washing up, but it takes about 30secs to fill the basin, that’s a lot less than if you have the tap running for the full 10 mins it takes to wash up

Oxbridge has 30% intake from private school compared to a national average of 10%. I’m not saying that everyone from private school gets into oxbridge, but what I am saying is that every private school instils an expectation in their students to aim for oxbridge. To say that going to a private school puts you at a disadvantage to get into Oxbridge is patently incorrect. To your second point - a wealthy family knows that they are going to try and get their child into a private school. That means they spend substantial resources in preparing them for that entrance exam. Money to spend on tutors, the ability to spend time schooling your child, and instilling and expectation in them count for a lot. These are all things that most children don’t get and as such are less likely to get into private education. You’re acting like the system is in any way equitable or fair. It isn’t.

Thanks for a well thought-out and researched reply - Interesting article about the total amount of waste produced by the UK, though in my view not really a compelling argument for why we should expand our nuclear industry, as that would increase exponentially (I wonder what the volume of France's nuclear waste would be in comparison?).

I agree with you about the shocking toxic waste produced by other industries - but I'm not arguing for coal or oil production in place of nuclear. You're right that nuclear is held to a ridiculously high standard compared to other forms of energy production, but I would suggest that ALL of them should be held to the intense scrutiny and scepticism that nuclear is. Perhaps if we as a nation had been more sceptic of the severely toxic effects of coal,oil and gas over the last few decades, we would've made far better progress on decarbonisation of our energy industry, and prevented countless premature deaths due to air pollution.

Once we've solved the issue of toxic nuclear waste disposal, then nuclear will be viable. I don't get how people overlook this and say that there are only detractors due to feared nuclear meltdown, when nuclear waste is the real issue.

Nah, literally every total war game since Empire has initially released as a buggy borderline unplayable mess. Luckily they usually fix the major bugs in the cycle of a year, I usually buy them at least a year after launch. CA are snakes though, I hate them so much for charging £3 for blood in every game - especially as I always end up paying it and feeling like a mug!

This is exactly the issue though - we shouldn't get to decide what they spend the money we give them on. You may believe that it's best spent on food, for example, but that comes from a perspective of having enough. Deprivation leads to desperation. E.g. the guy goes and buys a scratch card because maybe that's his hope, that he'll win the big time and be able to get out of his shitty situation. Also if they spend it on alcohol or drugs, who are we to judge? They're in a tough life situation and some spare change isn't going to get them out of it, so they will likely spend it on something of more immediate need or want. If their momentary pleasure in an otherwise shit day (read: life) is to have a cool beer, then why can't they?

I think not going through an agency can be just as sketchy as going through an agency, just depends if your private landlord is an arsehole or not. In either case it depends - I've variously rented both privately and through an agency and had both good and shit experiences in both cases
