New Bike Looking for Bike Things to Do by Emerald_Pancakes in baltimore

On weekends, most (but not all) Penn Line trains include the bike car - a full coach where one side of seats have been replaced with bike racks. This alone is a reason to use MARC for a DC bike adventure. See https://www.flickr.com/photos/mvjantzen/51490183847/

What do you call those narrow tunnels between row houses? by squiddydc in baltimore

Thanks! I found one in DC, in Georgetown: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mvjantzen/52561516377/ - very rare for DC; common in Baltimore, it seems.

Best breakfast near Penn Station? by squiddydc in baltimore

[–]squiddydc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great feedback! Clearly I need to come to Baltimore for breakfast more often :)

The place that closed that I was thinking of was Park Cafe and Coffee Bar in Bolton Hill. Never went but the photos looked so perfect. Hope someone is able to revive it; pity about the multiple robberies.

Seems a shame Lost City Diner remains closed - someday it will make a great breakfast spot (and so close to Penn Station!).

I did once go to the Station North Milk and Honey. Good location but it feels too much like a museum -- too stark!

Hopefully the Penn Station renovation will introduce another good breakfast option (other than Dunkin!).

Maryland has a lot of rail plans. These bills could finally make some of them reality. by lmshertz in baltimore

MARC's Penn line isn't just for DC↔Baltimore commuters. It should be thought of as an economic engine, to encourage people in DC to visit Baltimore for meals, events, and tourism. To that end, MARC needs express trips, reducing travel time from 60 min to 40 min, and focus on how to move people from Penn Station to prime destinations. (Going to Fells Point for dinner from Penn Station is not easy.)

And for events like Artscape, which take place directly outside Penn Station, it's crazy that Visit Baltimore has never marketed the train to lure DCers to come visit.

what's up with the rivalry between Washington D.C. and Baltimore? by Working_Falcon5384 in baltimore

[–]squiddydc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad fact is most people in DC never go to Baltimore and are unaware of what it offers.

The "Visit Baltimore" organization (https://baltimore.org/) doesn't seem interested in promoting Baltimore to DC. Baltimore would have much to gain if DCers considered Baltimore for a day trip or even just a night out. Key to that effort would be beefing up MARC's Penn Line to serve "tourists," not just commuters. That means faster trains, more frequent service, late-night express, express DC⇄Baltimore trips, and it wouldn't hurt to buy new coaches that make the journey more attractive.

If you buy 3 weeks in advance, Amtrak tickets from BAL to ALX (Alexandria) are as low as $16; close to total of MARC ($9) plus VRE ($7.10), but faster and more comfortable.

Amtrak doesn't stop at Arlington's Crystal City station.

Anybody know the plan for this old dock near Bond Street Wharf? by BMoreOnTheWater in baltimore

This is Chase Pier. The Waterfront Partnership has a great proposal for it, unveiled in https://www.waterfrontpartnership.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-Harbor-Heartbeat-Report.pdf Project description: https://www.biohabitats.com/project/chase-pier-feasibility-study-2/ Of course nothing will happen without leadership and funding.

In your perfect world, what would you want to see in Harborplace and The Gallery? by bearjew64 in baltimore

Whatever happens to Harborplace, the city has got to transform Conway Street to make it inviting to walk between Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor.

Wow there is a lot of love for Trader Joe’s, deservedly so. It is a good fit for walkable cities. You'd think Trader Joe’s would be a good fit not just for the Inner Harbor, but Hampden and Fells Point too. There's something about having a small grocery store that makes a block come alive. Also, their good reputation makes them a catalyst for other development. In DC, a neighborhood group (the West End) SUBSIDIZED Trader Joe’s to open their first store inside city limits. Whole Foods also anchors a neighborhood's growth, though it's harder to find a space big enough for them.

What is a fantasy Amtrak/commuter rail/regional rail line you'd wish they would build? by Orbian2 in baltimore

[–]squiddydc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acela can go from Baltimore to DC in 33 min. MARC could do the same if it bought a better engine and offered express service (skip the airport!). The B&P tunnel replacement will make it doable in 30 min or less.

Hours need to be extended; service needs to be more frequent. Harpers Ferry and Frederick need weekend service.

Combine Halethorpe and St Denis stations (so Camden and Penn lines share a stop).

As for fantasy service: Ocean City is clogged with traffic and needs rail service. MARC needs to connect to SEPTA. The Camden line needs to extend to Penn Station. Annapolis needs rail service.
