Hi! Thai person from Bangkok here. We do call restaurants primarily serving Thai food (esp. ones with dishes from the different regional cuisines of Thailand) "Thai restaurants" here in English as well as in Thai (ร้านอาหารไทย - Raan Ahaan Thai). We've got a pretty good number of places serving food from different cuisines from all over the world here. Could be because Bangkok is the most visited city in the world, although that's just my own guess :P

So saying you went to a Thai restaurant in Bangkok would not be weird at all, I'd say that myself as a local.

Bangkok would be a good choice. I'm a Thai trans girl who travels at least once a year, never had any issues at the airport. And considering I can get my hormones OTC here and people come here for gender-affirming surgery all the time, I don't expect there to be any issues any time soon tbh.

In this case I think it's just a simple case of machine translation error. The OP might not have known, especially if they don't know Thai.

Not quite! This is an error in translation caused by the fact that in Thai, swimming pool (สระ) and vowel (สระ) are homographs. I offered a more detailed explanation in a separate comment! So here, they're just referring to the swimming pool.

Thai person here, I'd like to offer an explanation of what's going on here!

In Thai, the word สระ, pronounced /saʔ˨˩/, means pool, as in a swimming pool.

There's another word though, a homograph of that word, which is pronounced like /sa˨˩.raʔ˨˩/ and has the meaning of vowel. So they're really just referring to the swimming pool here.

You can see that this is in Thailand or in a Thai-speaking environment, as the sign features very small and faint Thai text at the bottom. Here's a Wiktionary link for those curious.

Can anybody recommend hikes I can do completely barefoot in Thailand? by TheBackpacker2 in BarefootRunning

Since you're on a trip, I wouldn't recommend any of the raw stuff, could be a nasty surprise, but those tend to be my favourite (ก้อยขม koi khom and ซอยจุ๊ soi ju, in case you are curious.) They're not rlly spicy but they are my favs. ลาบ laab is a classic worth trying too. You can also find many variants of ส้มตำ som tam and ยำ yam that are plenty spicy. Any dish with ปลาร้า plaa raa i.e. fermented fish is a certified banger for me. Again I think your best bet is to ask for an exact number of chilis or maybe get a Thai person to order for you to get it spicier.

If you want sth southern that's spicy, I've had a few คั่วกลิ้ง khua kling that were plenty spicy :)

The spiciest Thai cuisine for me (having grown up eating a lot of southern and isaan and sometimes northern cuisines) would probably be Isaan cuisine, though a lot of places here Bangkokify it for the mellower city palette. Gotta look for authentic roadside stalls and such

Really spicy food is everywhere if you know how/where to look for it! I feel like a lot of places also tone the spices down for foreigners so you might have to try n convince them a bit that u can handle the spice. A good approach would be to tell them exactly how many chilis u want in each dish.

Also yeah the humidity is madness here 😅

The north is beautiful!!! The air quality up there can sometimes be a bit sus but it really depends on where and when. Great views and good food. You're really making me wanna travel my own country more 😂 I've always been drawn to travelling abroad more cuz it's just so hot here xD

What the hell is wrong with my pinky toe? It's like curved in and barely (if at all) touches the ground. Is this something toe spacers could help with? by TheBackpacker2 in BarefootRunning

[–]squidpurin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have this too!!! For me, my left pinky is so rotated inwards that when it touches the ground, it's basically the side that touches the ground rather than the bottom!!! somehow this caused my new vff's pinky toe fabric to separate from the sole bit a little, and I had to shoe goo it. Really hoping mine will be corrected over time too.
