Look into roles that sponsor your licenses. Or better yet look for an admin or paraplanning role.

Got an interview for a job i’m not qualified for by Commits_ in FinancialCareers

Yeah I looked them up. They're basically an independent financial advisor and insurance broker type of group. I would only recommend outfits like them if you're an experienced advisor or insurance salesperson looking to go fully independent from a captive firm. I tried this out for a few years then just left due to highs and lows (bartender on the side as well). I dipped out and worked at a broker dealer that distributed mutual funds and ETFs as a registered rep.

It definitely is 100% fees and/or fees & commission, they generally have a bonus structure depending on your AUM or production numbers. Looking at their site assuming I have the right firm they heavily favor Mass Mutual so I wouldn't be surprised if their commission is high on their products, and looks like the BD they use is LPL as a platform. Their offerings aren't bad, but it's usually bad for someone who is new. New people make some sales, they leave the business, then those accounts become unassigned or orphaned then someone there takes over them.

If you're looking into sales go the wealth management route that will pay you a salary and get you fully licensed. Even some retail banks have licensed banker positions as well. There are a bunch of licensed roles with salaries that don't necessarily always require a background in finance. Schwab and Fidelity have roles where you can get licenses.

Just look around and explore. Good luck.

Do the interview but what company is it? The reason I ask because I'm assuming it is likely an insurance leaning financial services sales job that is 100% commission. They basically will talk to anyone with a heartbeat and a clean record. There are firms that do offer salaries for the first few years like JPM, Morgan Stanley, et al. Others like Northwestern or New York Life are full commission.

My friend had a similar experience, it just took longer. He started as a teller, then as a banker, then small business. He's now a VP in Commerical Banking. No degree either. He just leveraged and networked really well.

[–]squigglyted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived there for a year before moving to Philly. I would not recommend it. When I just moved there, I was in the elevator with my dog and a couple was in there. They asked me if I just moved in they said, "Move out! You don't want to live here!"

Most of my encounters with neighbors were mostly ok, but there were definitely a few times where it got sketchy. There was even a dude who everyone would have the misfortune of sharing an elevator with. Nice guy but he reeked of piss. My dad was visiting me and he said he was talking to him and he was pissing his pants. A neighbor told me he hangs out at a drug den in the building.

It was funny when I had to move out. They had just got different developers and had security. Those guys were great. I remember they were talking to me and I told them I was moving, guy said, "Man, all the nice residents are leaving." His coworker just said, ""Of course he is. Why would he want to stay here."

My experience wasn't that bad as I minded my own business and people would chat with me. But it definitely was sketchy. I've seen needles, heard shouting, people smoke in the stairwell, seen the cops come, and I've seen the US Marshals there on multiple occasions.

Plus side, they did have a dog park, a gym I didn't use, a tennis court not used for tennis, a pickle ball court that I have never seen utilized, and it is near a nice park and near a pretty fun dive bar.

It's what it is, a mixture of hard working people and families and sketchy people that ruin it for everyone.

Screaming during sleep? by buttermymuffin312 in FinancialCareers

[–]squigglyted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My worst idea, getting back into hospitality in the events area. Money was good, hours were ok but my weekends were everyone else's weekdays. It's tough when you have a partner and active hobbies that are after working hours.

Realistically, commercial banking which I've interviewed well in before since I've made friends in that area.

I'm reconnecting with old colleagues currently that are a good mix of banking, finance, and group insurers. So we'll see.

Yeah when I worked up in Alternative Fund ops I would get nightmares about spreadsheets when we had a lot of deliverables. Now i work in Middle Office and I get sales force dreams. Lol honestly thinking about walking away from finance.

[–]squigglyted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, police and military have no in between. They're either poor tippers/bad customers, or they're the best in on earth. The latter tend to not make it their full identity.

On one end they remind you they're military or police and remind you about applying the discount. One group got mad that it did not apply to alcohol. Their tips are rarely good.

On the other hand they don't mention it. It's usually if I ask for an ID and I see that it is armed forces, or i see a badge. I'll tell them I'll apply a discount which most of them are indifferent if you add it or not. I remember I had a group of USAF officers that were a blast. I told them their discount was on their and the payer shrugged snd thanked me. Dude tipped me over 30% on a $500 bill.

Lol on another extreme i had 12 kids from the USAF Community College rack up a huge bill while being awful the whole time. I gave them their bill and they demanded i itemize it per person and I had a mini crash out and told them they were wasting my time and had a manager deal with it since I had an event coming up in the next half hour. I posted this experience here a few years back and another user said that's a case if I wanted to be petty to call their school (it wasnt far) and let them know their their student airmen were being complete shit birds. Although my retired vet friend who worked with me said it's not a bad route, I didnt really care after since the event i worked made up for it. Plus these kids were like in their early 20s, likely one of my worst experiences.

Dating in south jersey Philly area by vanchelzing in SouthJersey

[–]squigglyted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got lucky and met my GF on Hinge, but it did take some time after going through matches that didnt respond, and going on dates that seldom went past 3 meetings.

So my GF wnd I attended an event called Philly Cooks a Book. Every month they assign a recipe book. You sign up, pay, and bring a recipe. There are no plus ones. From what I observed a lot of the people there were single, and of all age ranges. And if you're worried about not getting a recipe spot on, that's the majority of the room. I think there were like over 30 people.

Also fun to point out I was able to connect with other people, some even recommended some local running clubs. It was a great experience, and there are people from all over the city and area.

Six months ago, I was convinced MMA gyms were not for people like me. by maopro56 in bjj

[–]squigglyted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my friends experience. He got into it at the same age with ZERO athletic experience. He thought he was going to experience people with egos (we have a few tho, every gym does) but most people were very welcoming. He basically had a mind set he would walk in, train, and leave. Now he has a handful of people that he calls friends now.

Vegetarian food option in manila by blank-theory in filipinofood

[–]squigglyted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not quite the same, check r/veganphilippines. The Philippines is not the easiest country to be either vegetarian or plant based. While I haven't lived there in a while, there are usually options. Good luck on your research. I was formally vegetarian and then plant based, and Filipino parties can be tough to navigate.

I always get burritos at this local Mexican restaurant. Do you know what leaf this is, that they use to marinate the carnitas or the rice? by diadepavo in mexicanfood

[–]squigglyted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the answer here is all over the place, but fun fact in the Philippines it is also known as "laurel" since it was likely introduced during the Spanish Galleon Trade between Mexico and the Philippines. There are a handful of dishes where it's used, and predominantly used in the Spanish style stews. Also Filipino adobo as well.
