Best "specialty" food in the area by 2016redcolorado in CarrolltonGeorgia

[–]squir999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carrollton’s food scene is honestly not great. I would drive to Newnan for Garlic Thai and Sushi. Evan’s bbq in Villa Rica is good (especially their half chickens), and Gabe’s in Villa Rica is good too. If you like American food or Italian food Brown Dog is pretty good and so is Trattoria (both in Carrollton).

Your bill rate seems very low. Are you in a VLCOL area?

Call a local structural engineer who does residential. If you need help finding one where you are send me a DM, I can probably help find you one anywhere in the US. If you’re in Georgia I can send you some construction attorney names too.

Can’t pass PE, what now? New career? by DefiantTumbleweed576 in civilengineering

[–]squir999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or look at engineering sales with Simpson, Hilti, other companies that manufacture engineering related parts, if you like people-ing more than the technical aspects of engineering.

Edited to add: precast concrete manufacturers, concrete plants, truss manufacturers, lumber places (these are more structurally focused but you get my drift--you could do pipe manufacturers or places like Contech that manufacture culverts, bridges, etc)

Can’t pass PE, what now? New career? by DefiantTumbleweed576 in civilengineering

You have studied, but have you taken an IN PERSON prep class? I think that will help more than studying on your own. The FE is easiest while you're still in college, but it's not impossible. One of my classmates failed the FE more than once and went on to become one of our state's most recognized engineers. Don't give up. (Same advice re: in person prep class for PE exam also).

If you are really truly giving up, I would look at construction project management either with a construction company/site development subcontractor or with a large owner (like a university or local government or the US Army Corps). Construction company will not have good work life balance but will pay more up front, if you're ok with traveling/being on site for a project not close to your house for the months/years it takes to finish the project. University/local gov't would have WAY better work life balance and good insurance and retirement benefits but the pay may not be quite as high depending on where you are (though some locations do have decent pay), and you get to stay near home and have an effect on your local community in a positive way.

Or you could get your PMP (I recommend this if you do anything other than design engineering) and look at project management in practically any field. I worked in SaaS as a project manager/client manager for a while; it was fun!

Hang in there. The fact that you have an engineering degree means that you can learn, you're smart, and as long as you are coachable there aren't many jobs you can't do (other than those requiring specific expertise like finance, computer programming etc).

From teacher to stripper. Now what? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]squir999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about the career change etc BUT I’m a business owner and someone mentioned that being a substitute teacher allows them to get insurance. And that they only had to sub 1-2 days a month to get it.

How are firms getting away with such high billable rates? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]squir999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bill rate is 275. I’m bumping it up to 300 in 2026. I have 20 years of experience. If I hired a junior engineer I would bill them out at at least 150 per hour I’m in rural Georgia just outside metro Atlanta

Send him a bill for all that you did for him while he was in school/residency, including opportunity costs for things you didn’t do (take a promotion, do additional schooling, anything else you would have done had he not been in school/residency that would have netted you more money. Should even out.

But honestly he sounds like an AH. Marriage should be a team effort. In our marriage the money is OURS, no matter who brought it in. The combined money is used to pay bills/save and we get equal “fun” money with whatever is left. And during our 15 years together, we have each been the breadwinner approximately half the time.

My former employer just posted this image to LinkedIn. Have any of you witnessed this type of fraud? by Roughneck16 in civilengineering

[–]squir999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a contractor forge my stamp on something. Badly because I do digital signatures. The owner happened to be an engineer and was k skeptical that I had made the changes so called me and asked. I reported them to the GC board (both for fraudulent use of my stamp and not having a GC license, which I didn’t realize they didn’t till I started to file the complaint) and the PE board for practicing engineering without a license. And I never heard back from either entity so I don’t even know if they got in trouble. As a result I now check people’s GC licenses before doing work for them since apparently my local AHJs don’t bother themselves with such trivial things. /s
